Summary: Very good movie
Review: As a Christian I had high hopes going into this movie. For the most part I was satisfied. The Christians in this movie were potrayed as they should be - loving, caring, generous. The actor that portrayed Caligula was perfect. The role of Pilot was short but good. It made Pilot appear rather spineless and dense.

The lead character, Marcellus, was wonderful and he transformation was the most important part of the movie to me. His overacting in several occasions was something you just have to overlook. As for his love interest, I never quite understood her purpose and how he fell for her so quickly.

Regardless, the part of Demetrius was the one I most enjoyed because of his love for Christ.

I recommend this movie if you can just see beyond the overacting.

Summary: "The Robe"
Review: This is one of the greatest Biblical movie, I have ever seen. I
have been waiting for this to come out on DVD. I could watch this movie all the time, along with Ben Hur, Sparticus, The Greatest Story Ever Told, The Ten Commandments. They don't make movies like that any more. I think everyone should include these movies to their collection.

Summary: A Roman tribune¿s perspective of the crucifixion
Review: Richard Burton plays a Roman tribune who displeases Caligula and gets transferred from Rome to Palestine just before Jesus arrives in Jerusalem and is arrested. You never see the actor playing Jesus close up, you are always on the edge of the action just as Burton is.

The robe refers to the garment Jesus was wearing before he is crucified. Burton wins the robe in a dice match, and the touch of it (and Jesus' blood) has a profound effect on him. He has visions and nightmares the drive him to find out more about the wearer of the robe. He is a disbeliever who must come to an understanding of what is happened.

Burton does a great job as the haughty tribune. Another great performance is the actor playing Caligula. His near hysterical portrayal fits with the historical information on that emperor.

I would recommend seeing this movie.

Summary: The First in a line of great epic movies
Review: Richard Burton and Victor Mature make this story about a Roman Gladiator who becomes a Christian a good family movie. It shows how even in its infancy, the Christian faith was spreading throughout the world.

Summary: Great inspirational film!
Review: I think it is safe to say, there is a love or hate relationship with this movie. It is overt in its message of the gospel. Those who have a love for righteousness and God will enjoy the entire content of this film. Persons who hold animosity toward Jesus will in most cases be offended by its glorification of His life and message. It is a story about faith above all else and about the power of love over evil. The film lacks modern quality and refinement, however the message of Gods power to deliver and change lives is more than enough to redeem it in value. This is a great family film. I can only hope there will once again be films of such moral integrity which grace the screens of American movie theatres.

Summary: Not as good as the first time.
Review: Well, now,[Nov.1, 2001] THE ROBE is finally available on Dvd. Too bad that they couldn't find a better VHS print to run as they copied it onto a cd-video[dvd]disc master because the movie looks like they did exactly that! It looks like a BAD VHS print!A terrible dissapointment on dvd...some visual "snow" onscreen[from the copied print]in different areas as the movie rolls along...and, there are moments during daylight scenes when daylight is dark as night...too often. I remember seeing THE ROBE as a TV rerun when I was a child and it left a good memory. I liked it so much that I saw it almost yearly everytime it was rebroadcast, for many years long after the theatrical release. What's really scaring me is that I bought "DEMETRIUS AND THE GLADIATORS" on dvd a couple weeks before I bought "THE ROBE" and I still haven't seen it yet.I made it a point to find "THE ROBE" dvd and view it first because I read a review on here that "DEMETRIUS..." is the sequel to "The Robe". I just hope that it's in much better viewing condition than this. WHY did they not remaster "THE ROBE" for dvd format?

Summary: A Good Biblical Epic
Review: The Robe is most famous now for being the first movie filmed in CinemaScope. It was not the first film shot in a widescreen process. There were a few experiments with widescreen in the twenties and thirties, but The Robe was the film which started the boom in the production of widescreen epics. The Robe therefore has a definite and important place in cinema history, but this would mean little today if it were not also a fine film in its own right. In this respect it does not disappoint. The story tells of Marcellus Gallio (Richard Burton), a Roman tribune sent to Palestine who oversees the crucifixion of Christ. He wins Christ's robe in a dice game, little realising the significance it will have for him. Burton is very good in this role and shows what a fine film actor he could be. Victor Mature is also entertaining as Demetrius, Burton's slave and later his friend. Best of all the film shows Jean Simmons at her best, playing Diana the woman Burton loves. My only complaint about her role is that she does not appear on screen enough.

Biblical epics may not be terribly fashionable nowadays, but I've always enjoyed them and The Robe is one of the best of the genre. It describes the events surrounding the familiar Biblical stories using characters from the Bible and fictional characters to flesh out the narrative. In this way it rather resembles how Ben Hur interweaves the Biblical story with fictional events of Ben Hur's life. This technique works well in The Robe and makes for fine historical fiction with a religious theme.

The print used for the Twentieth Century Fox DVD is in good condition. The CinemaScope images have been anamorphically enhanced and look stunning. The colours are bright and clear and there is hardly any visible damage. The sound likewise is good with no background noise. This DVD only has some trailers for extras, but anyone who enjoys Biblical epics will want to get The Robe.
