Rating: Summary: Pretty Funny Review: I am a HUGE Petter Sellers fan. This movie is about an actor from India who is an extra on a movie set in Hollywood. He accidently gets invited to the directors party. His stunts are HILAROUS. The plot is pretty stupid, and the end of the movie drags on. BUT, it is worth it just to see his very funny stunts.
Rating: Summary: Good start, bad ending Review: As other people have noted, this film fizzles at the end. For the first 40 minutes or so this is a four-star film. There are scenes so funny you'll gasp for air. The first half misses five-star status because of some slow bits. In particular, most of the scenes with the drunken server are not comic gems. How much can you take of watching a guy weave around while holding a tray? But Sellers gets many great comic moments, from using a potted plant to fish his shoe from the swimming pool to inadvertently making hilarious sounds over the intercom. His Indian accent and awkward chit-chat are funny but never mean. Yet, this film eventually wears thin, its best gags used up in the first half. Even worse, rather than sticking with the smaller scale of the first half, which focused on the mishaps that occur as Sellers interacts with the individual guests, Edwards feels the need to up the antics. To do so, Edwards uses the improbable plot contrivance of hippie youngsters bringing a painted elephant to the party. The youngsters decide to wash the paint off, making lots of bubbles and foam that fill up the house. The result is mindless spectacle, not humor. By this time Sellers, the soul of the film, has faded into the background of soap bubbles. A final complaint: was it necessary to include the romantic subplot?
Rating: Summary: Peter Sellers in a different role... Review: Saying Peter Sellers in a different role-- is quite redundant. He was in the most unusual roles throughout his career. I take my movies seriously, and I love this one-not perfect (though no movies are), but I love it. A true chameleon, Sellers manages to pull off the 'Indian extra' role without being insulting. The only thing that was fake was his skin color-- Sellers was married to a great Indian woman and knew how to portray characters without relying on idiocy. This is no Dumb & Dumber character, he just happens to be a very unadept man-- think of a real Mr. Magoo...
Rating: Summary: Sellers at his best Review: Peter Sellers performs wonderfully as a bumbling Indian actor intent on making it big in "the business." The birdie num num scene had me in stitches laughing so hard(it's just such a funny thing to hear him say). The only downside to this movie is the ending, which is a bit weak. Still, it's definately worth picking up to watch over and over again!
Rating: Summary: A Mostly Forgetable Film Review: This is certainly one of the weakest of the Peter Sellers/Blake Edwards collaborations. The Sellers' character is interesting and entertaining enough; a rather naive but innocent film extra from India working in Hollywood. Sellers does a good job in becoming that character in the way that only Peter Sellers can do. But the problem is that there is simply no script. Nothing to turn into a great, or even good, movie. Even Peter Sellers' great ability alone was not enough to carry this film the distance; or even half way.The movie begins with some amusement, even occasional tittering and laughter. That is primarily due to Sellers' great comedic character acting. But by midway into the movie there is not even much amusement left. It was clear this movie had little to offer and was going nowhere. Many of the scenes seem to be simply conceived (or illconceived) and written on the fly. And with little comedic success. As a staunchly heterosexual male, the only thing that kept me interested in this movie was looking at Claudine Longet! She is worth looking at even in the worst of films, and this one was close to it. Of course Blake Edwards also directed Breakfast At Tiffany's, and I believe this movie was his attempt to develop the party scene from that movie into a feature film. The similarities between that party scene and this movie (The Party) are numerous. In the 1960's the party scene of B. At T. might have been highly celebrated as being hip and funny; but in the year 2000 it is probably the most dated and uninteresting part of that film. This movie, The Party, fairs even worse. Recommendation: If you've decided to collect all (without exception) the Peter Sellers' or Blake Edwards' films, then by all means pick it up. Otherwise, this one is strictly rent material. It's probably worth seeing once. After all, it is a Peter Sellers' movie. And don't forget about Claudine Longet!
Rating: Summary: The Party from HELL! Review: This movie is pathetic. Let me say right off that I am a very funny person and totally sarcastic. I love British humor- John Cleese is cool. So maybe Peter Sellers is too stupid for my refined taste. But hey- isn't funny supposed to be funny for everyone? How can this movie be labeled a comedy? It made me cry-from the realization that I had just wasted two hours that I could have used in fulfilling my life. What a waste of little grey cells. Birdie Num-Num- in my mind that is akin to Barney humor. Total humor cesspool. This movie basically takes place in one room- how great is that? And then the elephant- just as I said "What more can they fit in?" out struts the elephant! And the bathroom scene- toilet paper and watercolor painting? How distasteful is that? How profoundly lacking in intellect. Anyone who watches this movie and actually likes it is a disgrace to humor. Please- don't watch this, don't buy this- spare yourself HELL!
Rating: Summary: Hopefully on DVD soon Review: I have seen it around 15 years ago, and it is still one of my favorite Peter Sellers flicks. No digital effects necessary, actors can show their talent. A must have in my collection. Hopefully on DVD soon.
Rating: Summary: "You'll never work in this business again!" Review: "Does that include television Sir?" One of Seller's best! I first saw this film as a child and have been laughing ever since! From the opening scene to the end credits-this movie is absolutely hysterical! Sellers is a genious as a bumbling Indian actor trying to make his way through a Sixties-era Hollywood industry party. A real madcap flick in the tradition of other zany, classic, Sixties comedies! A definite testament to off-beat Sixties cinema with a great Henry Mancini soundtrack! "Howdy Pard-a-ner!"
Rating: Summary: Howdy Partner Review: I saw this movie for the first time today and i'm still laughing about it as i'm typing this. This is a must see movie. I'm a serious movie viewer, I see alot of movies, and this just became my favorite movie. BIRDIE NUM NUM! HOWDY PARTNER! Peter Sellers is an excellent actor and he is the best person for his part in the movie. I must say that this has to be one of the best movies in the world.
