Summary: The best movie ever made
Review: This is, quite simply, the single best motion picture of all time -- and by a wide margin. There is LAWRENCE OF ARABIA and there is everything else. From the literate script to the outstanding acting and cinematography, it beats the competition in all respects.

Summary: Wonderful movie, poor history.
Review: I love watching Lawrence over and over again, whenever I have an empty afternoon, or a quiet night alone. But the facts as presented in the film are not entirely right. Just keep this in mind when watching it.

Summary: Terrific film about an incredible man
Review: Loosely based on Lawrence's autobiographical account of the Arab Revolt, this is one of the most visually stunning films you will ever see. The desert is as much a star of the film as O'Toole or Sharif, and the cinematography is fantastic all the way through. O'Toole IS Lawrence - he captures the disturbed mind and simultaneous strength and weakness of character beautifully, and bears quite a resemblance to the great man himself as well. Sharif, one of my favourite actors, is a superb Ali and Anthony Quinn, heavily made-up as Auda Abu-Tayi, is almost show stopping. Auda is a woderful character in the book, and only an actor of Quinn's calibre can do him justice. In terms of historical replication of the book the film could have been improved, but that just isn't the point. It's an overwhelming film and one that everybody with any interest in Lawrence, The Middle East, The First World War or good cinema simply has got to see. I definitely put it in my top five films of all time, possibly in the top three.

Summary: Greatest epic movie ever made!
Review: Everytime I watch this movie, I always wonder, how will it feel if I ever watch it on big, widescreen? I'm not sure I can take it, to be honest. The scale is so grand, so row, so alive. The greatest thing to watch Lawrance of Arabia is that I know what I see is real. They are all real, the place, the people, the emotion, the story. All bloodily real. That's the ultimate goal a film can achieve. Peter O'Toole WAS Lawrance. He was in Lawrance's very psyche. Such intense performance, I never see any other actor could accomplish. This film, is ultimate Art, goes way beyond the real history itself. I adore the film and the artists played in it.

Summary: The way movies should be made
Review: "There is only the desert for you." These words, uttered by Anthony Quinn to Peter O'Toole, encapsulate the drama and enigma that was T.E. Lawrence's life. David Lean's "Lawrence of Arabia" is a masterpiece of directing, acting and cinematography. After seeing the film, I read Lawrence's "Seven Pillars of Wisdom", and realized how much of the actual epic didn't make it into the movie. But the film captures the essence of Lawrence's struggle to balance his ambitions with his romantic notions of Arabia. It is the way movies should be made. Lean's tortuous months in Jordan produced a mesmerizing and compelling vista of the desert - as captivating to us as it was to Lawrence. The landscape plays a silent actor to the human characters: it is always there, harsh, relentless, and woven into men's lives. Peter O'Toole's Lawrence is by turns driven and reluctant, part romantic scholar, part egotistic messiah. His Arabs and Arabia are the windmill he tilts at while fighting the Turks... in the end, neither the bedouin nor the land will yield to his notions of salvation. It's Lawrence's personal salvation that Lean is interested in. The supporting cast is superb. Omar Sharif is splendid as Ali, the man whose initial suspicions about Lawrence are transfomed into devotion and fear, and who dubbed the lanky Englishman "El Orens". Anthony Quinn gives a tour-de-force performance as Auda Abu Tayi, the proud, irrational leader of the Howitat tribe. It's a pleasure to watch him spar with Anthony Quayle's Colonel Brighton (recalling their appearances in "The Guns of Navaronne"). Alec Guiness, a Lean veteran from "Bridge Over the River Kwai" proves that there is life before "Star Wars", in his role as Prince Faisal. The movie glosses over some of the historical facts of Arabian politics during WWI, and Lawrence's surviving family sharply criticized Lean's film, but I think he has made a nearly perfect movie. 37 years later, it's still one of the greatest works of the big screen.
