Summary: Classic Robin Hood
Review: I'm afraid that the New Robin Hood with Kevin Costner, although somewhat of a pleasant distraction, pales in comparison to the original with Errol Flynn. Flynn was well known for his flamboyance and cocky attitude. It did not endear him to all but most loved his style especially in movies like "The Adventures of Robin Hood", "Captain Blood", "The Seahawk", and a few others. In later years his acting in "Objective Burma" showed that he was quite adept at more serious roles as well. In this movie even the supporting cast brings a wide array of feelings of sorrow and amusement to this wonderful film. For a two disk set of DVDs with many extras and being a special edition I can't wait to get my copy. For the period it was made the color, music, and sets were incredible. It remains a timeless classic that may be copied, but never beaten.

Summary: Errol Flynn as Robin Hood
Review: This is by far the best version of Robin Hood ever! Anyone who purchases this classic will not be disappointed nor will they want to watch another actor ever play the part again. Kevin Costner's version of Robin Hood pales in all comparison to the charisma, confidence, and style that Errol Flynn portrayed in this movie. If I could of given this movie more than 5 stars I would have!

Summary: a version so definitive
Review: ...it found its way into "Shrek". No kidding. As the other reviewers said, this *is* the definitive Robin Hood. Sure, the Douglas Fairbanks version was glorious, and Douglas Fairbanks was dashing, but it was silent. This one isn't. It seems like everytime, Errol Flynn would burst into his infectious laughter. This exuberance, plus the magnificently staged swordfights, clever banter and breathtaking stunts, make this movie the blueprint for such hits as Disney's 1953 "Peter Pan" and the various permutations of "Three Musketeers". (Peter Pan even wore green tights.) Swinging ropes, ladders, tumbling tables and stools, we needed Jackie Chan to remind us that props were once glorious elements of movie fights. In 1938 "The Adventures of Robin Hood" had them all.

Summary: Remember Howard Hill?
Review: All of the praise given to this movie is well-deserved. No one,
however, so far has mentioned Howard Hill, the master archer, who
actually performed all of the wonderful work with the longbow.
There were no special effects available in 1938 when Prince
Johns' soldiers were hit in the chest with arrows. Howard Hill
actually made those shots. He describes making the movie in his
autobiography. Mr. Hill was also in the movie - in the tournament
sequence. Here was a man who could probably outshoot Robin of
Locksley.

Summary: Hasn't Been Surpassed
Review: I'm 34 years old and grew up watching this movie on TV. It's always been a favorite of mine. Yes, it is kinda cheesy - The green tights and feather in the caps were properly mocked by Mel Brooks in his movie "Men in Tights." And the acting, as in most movies of the era is somewhat "Ham-ish" - one imagines that portions of the screenplay must have read: "Robin Hood places hands on his hips, throws head back, and emits rollicking laughter." Nevertheless, despite these two minor faults, it is a fun and beautiful movie. And when one compares this movie to that abortion of a movie with Kevin Costner playing robin hood (complete with required Costner butt scene, ninja maid Marian, and other vulgarities and stupidities), one can see the true staying power of this movie.

This surely is one of the top five classic adventure movies even made and it is highly recoomended. "Welcome to Sherwood m'lady"

Summary: I have the details!
Review: Release date: September 30th 2003 from Warner Home Video

2 discs: The film, commentary and several documentaries. We are promised that the film will be remastered in "Ultra-Resolution digital video restoration". From the details I've seen it looks like being a definitive version of the film...

Summary: The Adventures of Robin Hood
Review: A great family movie, full of excitement and fun! I will not repeat the other reviews here, but wanted to add for you old Roy Rogers fans that the horse that Maid Marrian rides was a young 2-3 year old stallion named "Golden Cloud", who not long after this movie job was spotted by Mr. Rogers in Hollywood's Hudkins Stables and became Roy's famous "Trigger: The Smartest Horse in the Movies".

Summary: The Best Version on film
Review: I Love this movie! Errol Flynn and Olivia De Havilland were one of the great Hollywood Screen Couples. Some of the many movies they did together were watchable only because of their Great chemistry. Others were classic. This is the Best of all their on screen pairings.

Summary: Classic Movie! One of the best ever!
Review: As a little child my favorite movie was The Adventures of Robin Hood. While I still love the movie (still waiting rather impatiently for the DVD), the original score to the movie is now among my favorites. Robin Hood is one of if not the best movie score written by Korgold. The sense of adventure, danger, excitement and romance are captured perfectly in the different cords of his music. Whether its Robin's Merry Men sliding down vines and attacking Guy of Gisbourne in Sherwood, the climactic sword fight in the castle or the classic ending as Marion and Robin duck out of the castle, Korngold perfectly captures the emotions of the movie. The Adventures of Robin Hood is the kind of movie that helped make Hollywood what it is today.

Summary: Swash, Buckle, Swordplay, Romance; Does it get any Better?
Review: AND IT'S IN TECHNICOLOR!

Why hasn't MGM/WB and Ted Turner made a definitive version of this classic on DVD? This movie competed against "Gone With The Wind" in the 1939 Oscar race. For the love of Richard and England, just look at the cast to see why; and just watch the movie to see what great movie-making is all about.

A script that begins in frame one and doesn't let up until the final credits roll; a cast that was almost everybody who was anybody in Hollywood at the time; a score that UNDERSCORES the action wthout overpowering it; and a final version that is among the most arguabaly perfect motion picture ever made.

My title of this review asks "Does it get any better?"

The real question is "Has it ever been DONE any better?" This is a violent movie. Lots of people die from a well-placed arrow. Yet the blood and gore is non-existant, although the point is well made. There's love and romance romping through the greenwood, yet all the performers are fully clothed, but erotic gets a new meaning when Flynn ascends to deHaviland's chamber, and they make love standing up, fully clothed, but you don't miss a whit of what's REALLY going on!

This is cinematic story telling at it's finest! A beginning, a middle, and an end, with a climax that will rattle the rafters!

Buy it. Watch it. Love it.

You can't go wrong.
