Summary: Trey and Matt's best yet
Review: After I completed watching the third season of "South Park" a few months ago, I concluded (and wrote on this site) that I considered it to be arguably the best season of any show in TV history. Well, having watched season four in its entirety, I've been forced to revise my opinion. This season is even better than its predecessor: sharper, funnier, more consistent, and more astute. More importantly, while some sociopolitical commentary had found its way into previous seasons, it was here that Trey Parker and Matt Stone really launched their concerted assault on the conventional "wisdom" of our time, a campaign that has continued to this day.

Now, one certainly shouldn't conclude that season four tones down South Park's legendary offensiveness, as there's still plenty of profanity and gross-out humor to be found here. That said, "South Park" also emerged around this time as a reliable source of witty political commentary. I recently read a column on the political website lewrockwell.com that outed Trey Parker as a card-carrying libertarian, and the emerging class of politically incorrect young people known as "South Park Republicans" has been well documented, perhaps most notably in the article "We're Not Losing the Culture War Anymore." Could "South Park" be the public face of a resurgence of truth and common sense in the national debate? Just maybe. Indeed, while Trey and Matt hardly champion traditional conservative values on their show, much of this season is devoted to exposing the fallacies of the modern-day scourge known as liberalism and the bitter, resentful little trolls who subscribe to it.

Sometimes, Trey and Matt will just come right out with their opposition to the latest left-wing nonsense, such as the devastatingly accurate description of hate-crime laws as a "savage hyprocrisy" in "Cartman's Silly Hate Crime 2000." Similarly, in "Cartman Joins NAMBLA," the membership of the North American Man-Boy Love Association is portrayed as exactly what it is: a bunch of perverts who like to have sex with little boys. "Cherokee Hair Tampon," which sees guest appearances from Cheech Marin and the outrageously incarcerated Tommy Chong, is an hilarious sendup of the baby boomer generation's sorry obsession with "natural" medicine where the kids' parents will swallow any PC tripe from a couple of "Native Americans" before the two admit that they're actually Mexicans.

At other times, though, the show's message is a tad more subtle, although "subtle" is of course a relative term when it comes to this show. "Chef Goes Nanners," based on the South Carolina Confederate Flag controversy, is a surprisingly insightful look at this country's weird racial divide. "The Wacky Molestation Adventure," while one of the season's weirder episodes, is spot-on in its parody of the child-abuse hysteria that sends parents to prison on the thinnest suspicion of (as Cartman puts it) "molestering" their children (and if you don't think this happens, read Thomas Sowell's "The Vision of the Anointed"). And then there's "Quintuplets 2000," which makes some valid points about the whole Elian Gonzalez controversy while also presenting us with the unforgettable image of Janet Reno in an Easter Bunny suit.

Oh, and did I mention that season four introduced us to Timmy, a wheelchair-bound monument to political incorrectness and one of TV history's most memorable characters (although I still prefer Tweek)? His coming out episode, "Timmy 2000," makes fun of more than you might think possible in 22 minutes, including but not limited to Phil Collins, MTV, the ADD cult, and smarmy "advocates" for the handicapped who want to protect them from the outside world. It also includes Timmy taking the role of lead singer for a metal band, a collaboration that leads to perhaps the single funniest song of all time. Just imagine a kid who can only say his own name and grunt unintelligibly behind the mic at a rock concert and you'll have an idea of what I mean.

Among the other highlights: the return of Saddam Hussein and Satan in the two-parter "Do the Handicapped Go to Hell?" and "Probably;" the simultaneous sci-fi parody and election commentary of "Trapper Keeper;" the outrageously offensive mockery of boy groups in "Something You Can Do with Your Finger;" and the introduction of the new teacher Ms. Choksondik in "Fourth Grade." If you have the previous seasons but not this one, get it right away; the best is yet to come. And if you don't have any seasons on DVD yet, repent your sins and get the four-pack. You won't regret it.

Summary: Best Season of DVD Yet
Review: All the seasons of South Park on DVD have been improvements over the previous, and this set is no different. Matt and Trey continue their pot shots at everything from hate crimes to Elian Gonzalez to boy bands to child molestation. And they do it in a very creative, very funny way. And it's awesome. Nuff said.

Summary: One of the most consistant seasons of SP
Review: As much as I love South Park, I must admit that, as a series, it lacks the kind of consistantly funny episodes that other similar series like 'Family Guy' boast. This is especially evident in season 5, which sports some of the series' all time highs and lows.

Fortunately, the fourth season doesn't suffer from this problem. In my opinion, there are only two episodes that are even debatably great. "Pip", which really didn't have anything to do with anything,(It takes the South Park character, Pip, and places him in Dicken's "Great Expectations".) and "Helen Keller! The musical" which just plain wasn't a very funny episode.

These two are merely exceptions, however, as the remaining 15 episodes of the season are all really funny.

Moving in to the fourth season, the animation program used to create the show was changed, and so you'll notice that these episodes look more like a real animated cartoon than any of the previous seasons. For example, the "green rectangle" money is replaced scans of actual bills, and in general the show just plain looks better.

Again, Trey Parker and Matt Stone are throwing in their "Commentary-Minis". Fans hoping that they'll switch over to full length commentary are gonna be waiting for a while, as both Trey and Matt are opposed to the idea of listening to someone egotistically ramble about their own show for half an hour. I guess they don't realize that that's what some fans want. Oh well, at least its better than season one and two. (Season one came with CDs [available on comedycentral.com...for free, I think...] that you had to rig up to play at the same time as the episodes on your DVD player for the commentary...And there was a LOT of awkward silence. And season two didn't come with any commentary at all.)

Well, I definately recommend that any fan of the show, regardless of how many episodes you've seen, pick up this set.

The fifth season on the other hand....well that's a whole 'nother review...

Anyway, I hope this review was helpful to anyone "on the fence", deciding whether or not to pick this up.

So thats the 4th season for you! It is probably one of the best. Its as good as the 5th season.

Summary: Kick ass!
Review: Every episode in this box set is a classic. All the best schemes Cartman comes up with to get ten million dollars are in this set: The toothfairy scheme, the boyband, under-age evangelism, all the good stuff. The comentary-minis, as Parker and Stone call them, are perfect for those who like hearing commentary, but don't like when it goes on for the whole program. They talk for just the first few minutes of each episode, and then stop so that you can enjoy the comedy. They also split the episodes into chapters of their own so that you can more easily find your favorite part, or skip through the opening theme so you don't get tired of it. Oh, one more thing...Timmy rules!

Summary: Great!
Review: Great... but imperfect. It doesn't have Spanish subtitles. The first two seasons had them. The third one, didn't, but it has spanish language so there wasn't a problem. But this one has neither subtitles nor audio in Spanish. I hope the fifth season fix the problem.
