Summary: Absolutely fabulous
Review: My goodness, what a show! It's truly sad to consider what's become of sci-fi since Gene Rodenberry dumbed everything down to the level of an elementary school filmstrip, and filmmakers everywhere decided that since that sort of bilge makes money, then everything sci-fi must be reduced to infantile rubbish. Space 1999 demonstrates what can be done when creative people write real drama for adults. Real characters, real situations, real climaxes - no photon torpedoes. Oh sure, the science isn't right, but at least it's courageous enough to be wrong. No nonsense words (technobabble) to make a joke out of it all - it's not right, it's not even wrong; it's just nonsense. This show at least tries. Personally, I love the "cerebral" quality of everything, it sets a very definite mood, and the show works wonderfully within that mood. These are characters that you won't see in the knuckle dragging collection of cliches known as prime-time TV; these people are unique, they have quality, they are enjoyable to watch. And the quality of the DVD's is amazing. I have never seen a show from the '70s that has been restored to this level - the video is superb. Overall, this is a no-brainer. If you want adult sci-fi, with CREATIVE stories, CREATIVE sets and special effects, and out of the ordinary characters - indeed if you're just dying for something that makes an adult think, as opposed to something designed to pound a sanctimonious, politically correct message into the head of a child, this is a must buy.

Summary: The finest sci-fi TV series in history lands on DVD
Review: I bought this set on DVD about a year ago and had not gotten around to watching it in this format. Why? Well, I had collected the laserdiscs in the early 1990s and so felt pretty familiar with the show. What a mistake! This DVD release is so sharp, so clear, the series looks like it was produced in 2003. It's THAT cool. I found myself instantly drawn in during the opening episode "Breakaway," and riveting by succeeding episodes. Now I'm onto the other DVD sets I bought, mid-way through the first season, seeing all things that made me a fan of this series in the 1970s. The "atmosphere" of Space:1999 (sets, costumes, spfx, mood) is established perfectly in Breakaway, one of the best series' premieres in the history of the genre, and it just keeps getting better. In this set, I particularly like "Black Sun," which grapples with metaphysical notions, "Earthbound," a clever little story with a sting in the tail, and "Another Time, Another Place," a haunting adventure about alternate destinies. For years, Trekkies and critics (often one in the same...) have dismissed the show while the legend grew. Here's you chance to evaluate it for yourself and see what all the excitement is about. Somehow, I don't think you'll be disappointed. You'll be hooked!

Summary: Flawed but very watchable.
Review: I could excuse any youth today for finding this series cold, sterile and slow. But for me in the 70s, it created a sense of wonder and awe that few shows could equal, and to finally have it available on DVD is a dream come true. It has held up very well over the years, thanks mainly to the superb effects and design elements. You do have to suspend disbelief quite a bit however, and accept much of it as Science Fantasy - not Science Fiction, although many of the procedures on Alpha and involving the Eagles, seem more realistic than much of what is seen on Star Trek. Enjoy it for what it is, and try not to be too critical.

Summary: Possibly the worst written Anderson series
Review: The four Gerry/Sylvia Anderson series with which I am familiar ("Thunderbirds", "Captain Scarlet", "UFO", and "Space 1999") all have much in common. At their best, they have high-spirited adventure, good character situations, campy humor, and gee-wiz sets, costumes, and gadgetry. At their worst, they have jaw dropping logical flaws, stock footage overused to the point of obvious inconsistency, and excruciatingly painful sci-babble. "Space 1999" has some of the coolest sets and gadgetry, and it's hard not to fall in love with them. Despite critics to the contrary, I feel the acting is overall quite competent. However, the episodes tend to be so unflinchingly immersed in trademark Anderson sci-babble that at times I find them almost impossible to sit through. This is a classic and unforgivable example of a show trying to be more cerebral and failing miserably because it substitutes sheer, almost random BS for science and logic. By all means rent these discs, but don't bother to buy them.

Summary: Notwithstanding the other reviews...
Review: ...which point out the cool special effects, great imaginative story lines and fancy spacecraft, I felt badly let down by the production quality of the DVDs. The content is wonderful, but the transfer was shoddy.
Space: 1999 was originally filmed in England, using film stock at 25fps. It has been converted to the US NTSC standard (29.97fps) which in most cases is not a problem, but during action sequences or any time there is a lot of movement on screen, you get a very distracting shudder to the image. This makes it quite uncomfortable to watch, which is a shame, because the Space 1999 stories were great fun.

Summary: The first And the Best of Season 1
Review: Eversince i was a kid, Space 1999 has been like a cult addict for me..but it has share of delight, humour, thrill and upsets..
but i can safely say the extra features could have been better..
There are not trailers for these first season.. but a tru Sci-Fiction lover and collector must collect the first season when the moon breaks away from Earth..especially the theme song and the events that led to the tragic MoonBase Aplha to be drifted away from Earth!! A must for all Earth 1999..the following 2-4 series in the set is rather slow and dissapoinint......it doesnt get any better than in season 4 when the shape shifter Maya is introdeuced..
Season 1 moonbase costume got a magic touch in the next season.
but for these one..the costume looks Ugly!!!

Summary: A good set for those nostalgic about the series
Review: A good set to own for those who remembered Space: 1999 as an interesting show to watch, when they were children. Chief complaints about the series, which appear to be common among most reviews are that this is a science fiction show that ignores any elements or truths about science. Also, the continuity that is present in other science fiction shows is mostly absent in Space: 1999. In other words, don't expect to find any rich character development ongoing through either season. The first DVD set does not have any excellent episodes, although it does have the very first episode, Breakaway, that started it all. The most impressive aspect of the series episodes are the sets, especially the Eagle spaceship, which has withstood the test of time, and still looks very realistic.

Summary: Pre-Star Wars Ecstacy!
Review: A review for Season One: As impossible as it may seem, science fiction used to be thought-provoking, before STAR WARS relegated it to the pre-teen set.. Even those cheesy giant bug movies of the 50s had a direct and often devastating take on modern atomic culture, and, after Stanley Kubrick solidified (and further codified) the potentially endless possibilities and meanings of the genre with 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, Gerry Anderson snatched the baton with his absorbing television series, SPACE: 1999 a few years later. It's hard to believe how well this short-lived series has held up, but given the popular alternatives of both the 70s as well as today, it's far more involving, rewarding, and resonant. This is exceptional stuff by both television and science fiction standards. As for Season Two: As horrible as Season One was fascinating.

Summary: Fantastic Adventures in the Year 1999!
Review: I loved this series. I was the only series of the 70's that I loved as much as Star Trek. Now they have finally released the entire series. First and Scond season. I prefer the first season to the second becuase most of the stories were better and in the second season they tried to force the effects, comedy and changed the sets. Professor Bergman and Paul Marrow were my favorite characters (Again lost in the second season.) I loved Main Mission (taken out in the second season) and the Eagles were very cool space ships. The control and monitors were imaginative and the action exciting! I even had the toy Stun Gun and Comlock and Eagles as a kid. Also, the score is by Barry Grey and it is fantastic in the first season. Derrick Wadsworth did the second season theme - I liked that one too. If you haven't seen it, you should get the first 3 sets. It's fun, fantastic and great Special Effects for the mid 70's. Martin Landau and Barbara Bain were the best (and husband and wife at the time)! Get this series....Go Eagle One!
