Summary: DS9 on DVD
Review: Star Trek Deep Space Nine will always be the cult within the cult.Although not as popular as the other Star Trek spin-offs(even the anemic Voyager who had the benefit of a network behind it),it has a diehard follwing of Trekker Niners who'll easily attest that DS9 was the best ST show ever.
Unlike the other spin-offs,the show as well as the characters evolved in its seven seasons.Notably The lead character Benjamin Sisko who started as a brooding arbitrator of a rundown space station.In the later seasons, the character was injected with the same passion that fueled Kirk and Picard,becoming a great Captain as well as accepted his role as the Bajoran's Emissary and in the end,joined the Bajoran prophets.
The first season was finding its own footing(althought the brilliant Duet was produced in this season).The second concentrated more on character only to culminate with the introduction of The Dominion.The third season found the characters dealing with an eminate Dominion attack while showing more character growth.But it was fourth season that it really came alive with the introduction of TNGs Worf as a new crew member,as well as classic episodes(Th Way Of The Warrior,The Visitor,Rejoned,Our Man Bashir & Hard Time).Season five not only included the Worf/Dax relationship,the threat of war with the Dominion,but brilliant episodes(The Ship,Looking For Par'mach,Rapture,Dr Bashir I presume)plus the beautiful tribute to The Original Series(Trials and Tribble-ations).Sixth season started with a six part war arc and concluded with the wedding of Worf & Dax.The briliant season(including the episodes The Magnificent Ferengi,Waltz,Far Beyond The Stars,In The Pale Moonlight,His Way,Valient)ended with the death of Jadzia Dax.The seventh finale season was hurt not only by the aformention death(replaced by Ezri Dax),but weak episodes(although Take Me Out To The Holosuite, The Siege At AR-558 and Chimara were classic episodes).The ten part finale arc which ended with What You Leave Behind closed thshow on a fitting yet premature ending. As Paramount releases the DVD sets throughout 2003(the tenth anniversary of DS9)as well as insatiate the many fans of this brilliant yet Overlooked show(and maybe a series of TV movies).

Summary: Great Quality, Depth and Excitement.
Review: Having recently bought Seasons 1 and 2 of TNG, I am eagerly awaiting the release of Deep Space Nine on DVD. I agree with other reviewers who point out the strength of the cast and depth of the plot in DS9. In a way DS9 is starting again for the crew of the station, they have to rebuild much of the stations instruments and try to get to grips with a new set of relationships between Cardassia and Bajor. The senior staff are extreamly well picked, but it is the non starfleet characters who perhaps are more impressive. Garek, Gul Dukat, Quark, Odo and the Kye are all well played by solid actors and actresses. As the programme progresses we understand the crew more and are treated to the Dominion, War, Klingons, Romulans, Vorta, shape shifting and much more. Hurry up and release DS9.

Summary: sci fi junkie
Review: Deep Space Nine is just another sci fi series that I think is great. It is its own universe. I want to own the whole series, although I must add that I am more interested in owning the last 4-5 seasons more than the first few.
I don't remember too much about the first few seasons, but recall really getting into the story as soon as the Dominion entered into the scene. From the discovery of the founders home world in the Gamma Quadrant of our galaxy, to the devastation of the Dominion Wars in the Alpha quadrant. I was enthralled by the story telling and the space dog fights. A very refreshing break from the typical Star Trek/ Star Ships on missions series...

Review: Star Trek's middle child is a wonderful series. Deep Space Nine has great characters, wonderful episodes, and a hudge WAR! When the DS9 DVD's come out I will make sure to get every season. If your a fan at heart then buy this DVD collection.

Summary: Star Trek - Deep Space 9
Review: Of all the Star Trek series I was most intrigued by ds9. I didn't start watching it untill its 5ft season, but i was able to see every episode on reruns before the series ended. The series had the most action out of any star trek series so far and the characters were easy to get to know. I would love to own the complete series on DVD, and i hope it is released soon.

Summary: The best Sci-Fi series ever
Review: Star Trek fans, I'm sure, will argue for decades over which of the Trek TV series was the best. But as a stand-alone Sci-Fi TV series, this one was the best I had ever seen. Just to let you know where I'm coming from, my other favorites include Blake's 7, Doctor Who, the original Star Trek series, and most of the Next Generation Series (post 1989). Deep Space Nine had it all. It was the first Star Trek series to be produced after Gene Rodenbury passed away, and I think he would have been very proud. The series had a grand story arc from the very first episode. It increased the number of primary characters over that of 'The Next Generation.' It featured more female characters in commanding roles (most notably, Major Kira). It mirrored the post Cold War politics and instability of the Balkins / Slovakia / Eastern Europe, with its setup of the dimming Cardassian Empire and the newly-freed Bajorians. It also addressed the legacy of empires past. One only needs to see the bond between Chief O'Brien (ethnic Irish) and Doctor Bashir (ethnic Indian) to identify echoes of the British empire. And let's not forget France, or for that matter, Casablanca! Deep Space Nine was a dense series. It had action, drama, romance, and a series-long homage to the classic film, Casablanca. It could have been called, "Everyone comes to Quarks." Quark is no Rick Blaine, but he does own a bar. And Odo is a very good redux of Captain Louis Renault. Add to that the familiar story of the spy-turned-tailor in the likeable character of Garak (the only Cardassian aboar DS9). In any case, it added a depth of romance and humor to the series. Furthermore, DS9 took advantage of a grand opportunity to further develop the Bajorians, Ferengi, and Cardassians as major players in the Star Trek universe. And it should be mentioned that although Rick Berman and company downplayed early rumors that the series would be "bleak" and "much darker" than the 'Next Generation' series, it was still a very different Star Trek. The cinematography, set design, and music might have looked and sounded a lot like The Next Generation, but this Trek had a much more realistic storyline, with very powerful and often dark themes. This Trek had the highest body count of any previous or future series. Every major planet in the storyline - Earth, Bajor, Cardassia, and Qonos/Klingon are all devastated by major military attacks sooner or later in the series (with one of them nearly being destroyed altogether). DS9 (the station) itself was originally built as a Cardiassian prison, where countless Bajorians toiled and died. So although this series is part of the same glossy world as TNG, the themes and scenarios are much more realistic. This series was about suvival against the odds, and I think it pulled it off wonderfully. This was a grand series about the struggle to survive and build trust among different races and worlds. And being a Star Trek series, it was also about management - how to manage people, build teams, and solve problems on the fly. I think any engineer, mechanic, or IT professional would love the new Star Trek shows, including this one for it's never-ending theme of problem solving and the demonstration of leadership skills. But above all, a series can't work unless the characters are well-developed, and the story flows at a steady pace. And that's where DS9 excelled. In my opinion, 'The Next Generation' became a great series only when a solid story arc was established, and the crew of the Enterprise-D had acquired multiple missions to deal with the Romulans and fight the Borg. I assume, that could only be done when the future of the series was secured (thanks to strong ratings in syndication). DS9 hit the ground running when it premiered in early 1993, thanks, of course, to the success of TNG. It's characters were very well thought-out (most of them had solid backgrounds and personal interests established from the start), and only grew in depth as the series progressed. And the story arc was emphasized with some of the greatest season-ending cliffhangers I've ever seen. It is quite possible that the finale of the 1999 series (I think it was '99) when both Garak and Worf lost their love interests during an attack on DS9, was as dramatic and powerful as anything I had seen on other well-written drama series such as Homicide or Six Feet Under. In fact, Homicide was the only other TV show I watched between 1993 and 2000. It could be years before all 7 seasons of DS9 are released on DVD. But let's hope Season #1 is released soon. And then the journey can begin again. This was one for the ages for Trekers and non-Trekers alike.

Review: Star Trek DS9 is hands down the best series in the Star Trek Universe. It's also the only Star Trek where there's no star trekking involved, except for the occasional visit to the Delta Quadrant and Klingon Homeworld, not to mention Cardassians home planet and some other places i don't have to mention here. Ever since i move to this part of the world, i've been missing DS9 every single day for three years and i can't wait anymore. Please release it in DVD A.S.A.P., not just for me, but for millions of DS9 fans out there, all over the world. So please, let there be DVD.

Summary: The beginning of my favorite Star Trek shows...
Review: DS9 broght to the screen a concept whic had been unfimiliar in the Star Trek realm until then - a series about the lives of people on a space station, rather than on a space ship.
After the original Star trek 7 & Star trek TNG, the concept of a space station may have sounded boring. But as it turned out, Deep Space 9 was the most interesting one for one major reason: since the characters were stuck on a stationary space station instead of a space ship that could zoom about the quadrant, we got better & deeper characters, a better look at their interactions, a better look & understanding of new or rarely handled races, but mostly - a much bigger picture of the politics of the era.

Review: ... However, the first season is so-so. I am a huge Star Trek fan. Hands down Deep Space Nine had the best writing, character development and plot -- but most of those things come later in the series (like season 4 and beyond). I do think if you are either new to Deep Space 9 or just want to have the collection you should start from the beginning (Season 1) ... but don't let the first season fool you into thinking the rest of the seasons are as slow or drab. THEY ARE NOT! ** Season 1 focuses more on getting to know the charachters, where they come from and the far out region of deep space the space-station is in. Its an introduction. That's about it.
Although, the writers did slip one FANTASTIC episode into the first season that dealt with Major Kira and a Cardassian who comes on the station and who is charged with war crimes during the 'Occupation' of Bajor (Nazi and Jewish themes here). This episode actually made me cry when I watched it. The acting and the emotional range were unbelievable.
All in all, get this 1st season for your collection -- just don't stop there. The rest of Deep Space Nine is fabulous and by far the best Star Trek EVER created. For real!

Summary: Poor DVD setup, though I like watching the episodes
Review: DS9's writing in this first season was a little poor--it lacked development and explanation. It is always disappointing when something interesting develops, then is entirely ignored and unexplained. Characters also often acted, well, out of character. They would do things entirely unlike themselves and completely below their capabilities because the writers found it more convenient to write it that way.
However, it is entertaining. Some of the characters are very interesting. Although this season is often far too topical and offers far less for discovery than it should, it is still fun to watch.
The DVD setup was remarkably poorly designed. The format for the episode selections is terrible. We had to look at the box to figure out what sequence they aired in. The extras on the last disk are even worse. They are randomly scattered around the screen, usually without even a description of what they are. And they're FULL of spoilers about the rest of the entire series!! Instead of just a perspective about the particular season, they talked about the entire series and gave away a lot of info as to what happens in later seasons. It's like they gave no thought at all to the format and setup of the DVD's.
I gave it three stars, because there's a balance between enjoying the episodes and having to deal with the poorly-conceived presentation of them.
