Rating: Summary: I just... didn't like it Review: I had heard about this series when it first came out and decided later on to rent the DVDs and give it a shot. There were friends of mine who just cackled about this show and swore it was great. Did I agree? No.The characters of "Sex in the City" for one are really shallow women. They don't approach relationships in a mature fashion, they view men as sex objects rather than actual people (Mr. Big) and shopping seems to be the choice of relaxation (let alone martinis galore.) I found myself kind of disgusted with their attitudes and lifestyles in general. Not only can they not relate to the everyday woman in money and career ... but they come across like the friends I had that were bitter, nasty and shallow due to failed relationships -- remember those women I mentioned that liked this show? That pretty much describes them. Maybe this type of show is to "give it right back" to guy shows that treat women like objects but honestly I'd rather watch something above that than something that degrades women in this fashion. So, what do I sum up? Shallow show. I know a number of ladies who can't stand this show either. Kind of focuses on very immature women (sexually, socially and self-esteem to boot) who go through a very non-realistic lifestyle without a thought to whom they sleep with. (Last I checked, no one really did this unless they were sleazy or hookers.) If you have a self-esteem, you shouldn't bother with this one -- it'll just remind you of that woman you know who has nothing better to do except keep punishing herself with bad mate choices.
Rating: Summary: The Golden Girls of 2000 Review: If you loved the Golden girl before, this will be your next beloved sitcom. Actually, both sitcoms have a lot in common. Samantha acts like Blanche, loves men and more men, Rose is impersonated by Charlotte, the more conservative person. Dorothee and Carrie have a lot in common, too. Just Sophia and Miranda do not mathc exactly. The stories are great and you will certainly enjoy it. It's not all about sex, but about relationships and life! Do not hesitate, just buy it, take it on your portable DVD player to bed and watch all night through!
Rating: Summary: award-winning by whom???? Review: Who wants to see this flat story book of boring, totally non-sexy, unrealistic NY relationship tales, lead by a bundle of ugly bones and warts? I pity the definitely talented make-up artists in this showcase of disgusting women. There is also nothing wrong with the camera crew, the sound people and the many other great talents behind this show. Just replace the female actors and the writers, and you have a five-star series. I'm amazed by what some hair-styling, make-up and cloths can do to create a female TV character, though. I think, SJ Parker would make a good background character in a horror movie, just leave her without the make-up people for one night. Let's take a look at the picture that S&C is painting of NY: Nobody working, there is hardly any daylight, strange clubs that you couldn't find even if you were looking for them (let alone the question how even a made-up bony ugly dwarf would pass the doorman). Who can find the dialogues "smart and savvy", since they are just a reflection of your last 20 years of bad movie's repetitions? The stories are stale and predictable everytime. I watched the DVD bundle of this series for this review and I'm still not finished throwing up. Nobody I know gives a damn about this series. I wonder very much about the "awards" this series got. It must be due to the majority of HBO producers in the juries. Have YOU ever been asked to be part of a Hollywood jury? And why not? Maybe, because you would never even consider rating garbage all the time! I would find it a perversion of our life, if SJ Parker types would have their way.
Rating: Summary: Hm... Review: Beside the obvious and incontestable beauty of this movie it was fascinating to see how The Girls hypo-feminism and geno-cynicism was evaporating each time they exposed to a confident or a comfortable about himself man. I do not know if this message was an intentional one... but.... this actually added value to this movie.
Rating: Summary: Archetypes of the Post Terrorist era... Review: It seems almost nostalgic watching these wonderful discs after the attack on NYC. But as the Pres tells us....we must get on with our lives. Such is the wonderful parlance of watching SITC. You will indeed feel yourself remembering a NYC that was once the capital of the self-absorbed and hopelessly middleclass. Where a life perspective revolved around shoes, clothes, the latest designer nightlife and SEX. Sex and the City revolves around a group of central characters that you find yourself identifying with on many levels. You will remember or know people that are like this....or at least similiar in some respects. The situations that they get into can be completely inane and bizarre, but alas there is a perpetual ring of truth to a lot of the 4 womens exploits. Hence what makes the show work. The show succeeds by pulling back the shallow glitz image of 30 somethings aka: bad beer commercials and formulaic Sleepless in Seattle romance to deliver breathing characters with an astonishing sense of life and purpose. I find myself astonished at how on target the writers can get with certain issues and situations. There is so much bad writing in Hollywood nowadays, it's great to see the intellectual level of honesty and realism that this show delivers. I have both Season 1 and 2 disc sets and am waiting for the third season to arrive on disc. Both sets are outstanding and the extra features, while not amazing, at least deliver some further insight into the characters and the very talented actors that play them. BTW: Steve gets my vote for cutest and most sympathetic male in the show.
Rating: Summary: Better and better Review: I bought the 1st and 2nd seasons in boxed sets as a gift for my husband for Christmas. It took us a few shows to really warm up to "Sex and the City," but now we are hooked. These women are great! They are sexy, independent and sweetly vulnerable. Now...how to get our hands on the 3rd season!?
Rating: Summary: It took me a while.... Review: It took me a while to fall into very much liking this show....this show and one other HBO series is the only reason I subscribe to HBO....at first I thought it was a "chick" show but after a few episodes I found myself understanding both side of the dating game in the big apple.....now I dont miss an episode and eagerly await the new bonus season starting in January 2002.
Rating: Summary: An Accurate Look at Love In The Big Apple. Review: Being a native of NYC, this is a wonderfully entertaining and very believable show. I'm not "Out There" anymore, but I remember how it was for me and other single friends in New York. Don't ask what it was like, just watch this!! .............. These four friends are very different personalities with different jobs, but they allmake us laugh and cry along with their one common problem, lack of eligible bachelors who are ready to commit, as opposed to BEING comitted for their various neuroses.............. I get HBO, but didn't catch the first two seasons, so I bought both at the same time. I watched both sets within a week, they were SO much fun. I finally got the whole history of Mr. Big and Carrie, and I NOW like Big. Before seing these two seasons, I thought he wasn't a "Big" deal, but I got a good handle on him after seeing his character develop through the first two seasons. All the characters really come into their own in this second season. .............. If you have season one, I DO recommend you get season two.. ............ I hope "Sex" has a long healthy run. For the single lady viewer, you'll feel less alone in your dating woes. For married ladies like me, you'll appreciate your special guy for not makng YOU kiss any more frogs "Out There." A wonderful addition edition, and a must for fans of the series.
Rating: Summary: A "Must-Have" for single women Review: The Sex in the City series are the absolute best and a must-have for all single women out there dating. You can always relate to one of the character's experiences or make you feel better about some of your own "worst dates".
Rating: Summary: ...so don't buy it if you're a "dumb male from sticksville"! Review: I have been reading the other reviews here, and one things seems clear. The opinions are split along gender lines. The ladies love it, the guys "don't get it". Well tough beans, guys. You have your Maxim magazine and The Man Show, and Monday Night Football, and we have Sex in the City. Now I am not a thirtysomething single in Manhattan, not even close. But viewing just one episode every morning before leaving the house gave my spirit a little lift, and made me want to pencil in a hppy hour with the girls for later. Definitely! A couple bottles of wine and a few girlfriends over to the house to view these DVD's would be an awesome female-bonding experience. Sorry, guys. The show just wasn't written for you. Smooches!
