Summary: The Best Show Ever to Hit Television
Review: The Sopranos is the best show to ever come to television. It is written and acted so well that it instantly becomes a masterpiece (and gets ya hooked). I've seen every episode (at least 4X!) and know every line (even have them on tape) but still want to buy it. Thats how great it is. Bottom line is that its wonderful mix of mob life and family life all wound together with dark comedy.

Summary: Gut-wrenching and brilliant
Review: The Sopranos is easily the best television series I have ever seen. Each episode (almost an hour, uninterupted) is a mini-movie, and over the course of the season it is impossible not to be drawn in to the characters' struggles. There are no gangster cliches here, no caricatured one-dimensional characters, no stilted, predictable dialogue -- everything rings true. Best of all, and totally unlike any network TV show, the subplots are not neatly wrapped up at the end of each hour. In fact, most subplots are never resolved, kind of like life itself.

I absolutely cannot recommend this DVD set enough. It will change the way you view television.

Summary: A indepth look at mafia lifestyle
Review: This is an incredible inside look of a fictitious Mafia family and those around them. It serves to both repulse you and to humanize them at the same time. A very engrossing story line to say the least.

If you are a fan of Mafia stories, you will be pulled in with the schemes and rip-offs they pull, but even if you are not a major fan of that genre, the well-written story lines that deal with the other aspects of life will be just as appealing. This is FAR from a one-dimensional story line, with endless twists and turns to keep you guessing. It deals with normal life problems often, just seen with a different outlook.

Another plus is that this is an HBO late night production, so you don't have the censure of words or actions that happens with most series. So they are free to say and do anything, and do quite often. The one major drawback is that after watching a few, you risk becoming very addicted to the story and the wait for the next episode can be very hard to take. :)

Summary: About .......... time!
Review: What can be said about this series that hasn't already been said? Brilliant acting, twisting plots and movie quality cinematography. The only bad thing about this set is that I will be stuck in my sofa for hours and hours. Finally HBO realizes the need to release its (usually) wonderful programming on DVD/VHS. Now if they would just release Mr Show and Tenacious D. on DVD, I could die a happy man.

Summary: INCREDIBLE
Review: The first season of the show that changed the face of how the mafia is viewed. At many times during the season this show was the #1 rated show in america. People who didn't even have cable subscribed just to get HBO to see what all the talk was about. I have been waiting for HBO video to get on the ball and release this for quite a while. You WILL NOT regret purchasing this collection!

Summary: HBO's way of telling us to thank God our dad isn't a mobster
Review: "The Sopranos" has done more than just revolutionize television...being one of the best shows on TV with compelling story lines, quarky characters, and snappy mafia lingo...the show has redefinied the definition of family. But while we've grown up with our family, we've grown up with Tony's family and it's HBO's way of telling us to thank God our father isn't a mobster. The first season is great when we see Tony desperately trying hard to hide the salomi with his psychiatrist, Dr. Melfi. There's his dutiful wife that suspects that he's been cheating. TRUST ME THE LAST THING THAT I NEED TO SEE AT NINE O'CLOCK AT NIGHT ON HBO IS JAMES GANDOLFINI'S SLUGGISH, BEARISH BODY ON TOP OF A HOT CHICK. But it only fuels to the show. The violence. The sex. The language. It all accomplishes the real grit of being a mobster. I've heard fans say that they think Tony is the tragic hero-type, but HE'S A COLD-BLOODED KILLER! There's nothing heroic about that. Then there's the fact that a few years ago, somebody made a real adult film based on "The Sopranos". That's when you know you've become part of pop culture. Five stars all the way, for the cinematic effect that the collage of episodes brings to the small screen. Now you've got the skinny on "The Sopranos"...kapish?!

Summary: Wow - what an amazing show!
Review: It's been said many times but bears repeating - even if you watch nothing else, this show alone is worth signing up for HBO. On the surface it seems like "yet another" italian mafia flick which only adds to the stereotypes of italian-americans in cinema. Beneath the surface it is much, much different.

If you have not watched the Sopranos, I *strongly* recommend starting from the beginning with this DVD. There is just so much that happens in each episode, it's like watching 13 different movies. In my opinion, this season is still the best and after seeing it you will understand why this show has such a strong following.

And what separates this show from the "Godfather flicks"? Well, among some of the stories, you'll see what happens when a mafia heavy cracks under the pressure of dealing with his domineering mother (including a scene where Gandolfini is in a strip bar, popping Prozac and reading a copy of "Elder Care".) You'll see what results when gangsters meet gangsta rappers. And if that isn't enough, you'll find out about 80-year old Uncle-Junior's special talent, one that would never make it on the prime-time networks, and what he has to go through to make sure the guys don't find out about it.

It's pricey, but the fact that you're seeing all 13 episodes, each which could have been a movie in and of itself, makes it a worthwhile purchase.

Summary: Simply among the best!
Review: While I do not have HBO, I did catch an episode here and there either at a friends' house, or while on vacation in a hotel when the show was in it's early years. Recently, I felt that in order to grasp the concept of the entire series, I would just go back to where it all began in 1999 and start with the first shows. I just ordered seasons 1 and 2, and 3 is on the way, and 4 will follow. Since I received my movies, I have been watching this every night. This show is addicting, to say the least! You can't just stop, because each episode leaves you hungry for the next.
All I can say is WOW!!. As a dedicated admirer of mobster films, this is simply among the best. James Gandolphini is hands down, the ONLY person who can play Tony Soprano, period. If he is ever replaced, I could never watch it again in it's new form. In fact, this is one of the few shows that minor or major alterations in the main cast would spoil the show.
I like the fact that it is not a one sided show, but displays all of the character's ups and downs in life, family problems, relationship difficulties and so on. The mob and Italy aside, theoretically it could be any family in America. I could go into so much here, but I'm sure you already know all of that. Yes, it is violent, but without the violence and language, it would not be The Sopranos. Tony Soprano, a ruthless mob boss commands respect wherever he goes, but also when deemed necessary, displays his compassionate and humane side as well. Despite all of the turmoil, Tony's wife Carmella, is a demanding and strong willed woman who fights to keep her family together, and is stanchly dedicated in her Roman Catholic faith. She is the only calming force of the show, and seems to be the neutralizer as well.
While it is being slated for broadcast on A&E, I'm not too fond of that. Why butcher such a good program? But if they do, I still have my uncut, uncensored versions! More to come!
