Summary: Finally, Dark Shadows arrives on DVD!!!
Review: At long last, one of the most unusual and enduring soap operas has arrived on DVD...Dark Shadows! This is great news for all DS fans. I had taped nearly every episode off of the Sci-Fi Channel, but over the years, the tapes have been worn out and the reception is very poor. But now, us fans have a collection of DS that we can preserve and collect...not to mention, these small DVD cases save a lot of room from those boxes of VHS tapes.Dark Shadows DVD Collection 1 is equivalent to VHS Volumes 1-4. Normally the DVD Collections will contain 8 VHS Volumes, but this one only has 4, because the DVD episodes are not edited, whereas the VHS episodes are edited. When comparing the DVD to VHS, you'll find that the storylines are fleshed out more. This will only happen for Collection 1. A standard collection contains 10 episodes per disc, with 4 discs included, so you get 40 un-cut episodes. The overall picture quality looks great, considering this was a low-budget series. Like the disclaimer says, every possible effort was made to give the best quality, and it shows. The sound is pretty good and overall, much better than on VHS. Also included in the DVD is a postcard with a picture of a selected scene, and a booklet which gives brief episode summaries. The DVD's contain full screen credits at the end of each episode (something we never saw on Sci-Fi) and the opening titles with the waves crashing into the rocks. DVD Collection 1 is entirely in black and white, except for the menus of course, which are very easy to navigate through. At the end of discs 2, 3, and 4, there are 5-minute interviews with the actors: Jonathan Frid (Barnabas), Kathryn Leigh Scott (Maggie), and John Karlen (Willie). The DVD Collections start with the introduction of Barnabas Collins, so like in the first VHS volume, it has a brief 15 minute summary of the first 209 episodes. This collection features Willie Loomis releasing Barnabas Collins, a 175-year old vampire, from his chained coffin. He introduces himself as a cousin from England. While the family reacts to his great resemblance to the portrait of his "ancestor," they do not realize that he is the same Barnabas Collins who lived in the 18th Century. The story will then follow into the next storyline, with Barnabas kidnapping Maggie Evans and trying to turn her into his long lost love, Josette. This is a very addicting show. Once you watch an episode, you'll want to watch the next one right away. I have just finished Collection 1, and I can't wait to get my hands on Collection 2, not to mention to see the entire series on DVD. So enjoy, AND LONG LIVE DARK SHADOWS!!!

Review: Okay, I had a lot of older friends who just raved about this show. How they used to run home from school to watch it. Well, maybe they loved it because they were too you to realize how cheezy it was. Anyway, if you love Barnabus, then this is for you but if you don't have that childhood attachment then don't bother. Watch it on Sci-fi channel.

Summary: The BEST TV show now on DVD
Review: I bought this collection right after Christmas and couldn't wait to watch it. I have been a fan of Dark Shadows for along time, and watching this dvd was like watching the show for the first time. I couldn't stop watching. I was hooked all over again. The story is one of the best in daytime soap opera history. The black and white episodes on the dvd look better than I have ever seen them before. The dvds are a much better value the vhs. If you are a Dark Shadows fan, then don't miss the collection.

Summary: Perfect way to start Dark Shadows DVD collection....
Review: ...I'm a fairly new DS fan and I bought this first collection to catch up to the fans that have been watching longer. The 15 minute intro to the first 200 episodes took me right in and the 40 other episodes that introduce Barnabas Collins made me anxious to buy the next set of DVDs. I even showed my mom this first set and now she's hooked on the show and can't wait to see the next volumes.
The picture and audio quality is top notch and anyone that says otherwise is being nit-picky. Highly recommended if you wanna sway someone into DS-fandom.

Review: Dark Shadows has finally been released on DVD. This show has its own unique qualities that no other show has yet achieved. If you're a dark shadows fan or have ever enjoyed watching the show then the dvd set should be something to look into. Each episode looks and sounds far better than what was shown almost forty years ago on television. Hearing and seeing the show in an entirely different way makes each episode even better than it used to be.

Summary: Long Overdue!
Review: Finally..."Dark Shadows" in a durable home video format! Best of all, no commercials...no annoying cable channel logos constantly gracing the screen...and, wonder upon wonders, full screen credits at the end of each episode! Video quality is excellent, considering the age of the series, but the biggest surprise is the collection's sole kinescope--a very important one, featuring the first lines spoken by Jonathan Frid as Barnabas Collins, it looks remarkable, especially compared to the same episode as aired in syndication. Crisp/clean throughout, it's easy to forget at times that you're looking at a film of a videotaped program. This goes beyond DVD "looking better," someone obviously spent some time cleaning up/retransferring that particular episode. MPI only left one thing out...the opening slates, which I had dearly hoped would be included in the DVD release. That's minor, however. If you're a fan of "Dark Shadows," don't hesitate to buy this collection!

Summary: Dark Shadows After All These years!
Review: Captivating is the only way to describe the resurrection of Dark Shadows on DVD! Watching the show in the sixties and early seventies, I couldn't get enough of Barnabas Collins and Angelique. The plot was constant even if the acting was a liitle shaky due to being live broadcasting of the time. I am still glued to the set watching the Collection 1 and am now waiting for Collection 2 to arrive at my door. If you want to catch the later series, check out the SCIFI channel in your area.
