Summary: What Vietnam Can Do!
Review: The Deer Hunter shows a group of close friends. Three of them, including Robert DeNiro and Christopher Walken, go to Vietnam. When DeNiro comes back, Christopher Walken has been addicted to the game of Russian Rolay. Steve has been injured and was earlier sent back. The first half of the story is about their friendships, the second half is the war, and the last half is all about what the war can do to you. It builds everything up from the beginning, where you can get to know the characters very well, to the end, where you feel something, sorrow, or love for the characters. Your almost in the same position DeNiro was in, if you think how deeply you feel for your own friends at times. There are many things you can relate to in this movie, and I think that makes it a wonderfully made story of friendship.

Summary: can't say enough good things about this movie
Review: This is not your typical Vietnam movie, chock full of battle scenes and V.C. boobie traps and nineteen-year old boys crying out for their mothers before they expire. Hell, you're only in battle for about twenty minutes of the entire film. The Deer Hunter is a deeply engrossing anti-war film steeped in the importance of friendship and loyalty in an American steel town. It is about the devastation war can inflict on ordinary people. To pass it up is to truly miss out on a piece of history as it is one of the most important statements in 1970s cinema . Look for DeNiro in the most convincing role of his entire career.

Summary: The power of the gun
Review: Robert De Niro stars in this emotionally stunning flim about the Vietnam war, and the basic American that fought in it. De Niro plays as a steel worker from Pennsylvania, him and his friends always went up to the mountains for some deer hunting. They lead simply lives, partying, working, moving through life without much of a care. Christopher Walken won an academy award as best supporting actor with his role as De Niro's best friend. Enlisting in the army, De Niro and company are sent to Vietnam. Eventually becoming captured by Viet-Cong forces, the terror of the war becomes complete, as the men are forced into several deadly games of Russian roulette for their lives. Narrowly escaping death at every turn, De Niro and Walken are able to escape the prison, and even make it out of the jungle. De Niro looses track of best friend, and returns to a U.S that hates him for surviving. A trully stunning film, there will never be another like it. The best Vietnam war movie, because it addresses the people who faught in it, rather than the actual fighting, where we could look to movies such as Platoon for.

Summary: Stunning Movie
Review: This movie is so great, even people that don't like long movies or don't like war movies will like this. It's that good. The acting is unbelieveable.

Summary: A great movie...
Review: First, I would like to review the film. I am only 14, and my dad made me watch it on television. I agreed because it was good excuse to stay up until 3:00 in the morning. He grew up only miles away from the setting, and was there during this time period. He says it really depicts what life was like then.

The movie is great, and has supurb acting. I'm sure you will see all about that in the reviews, so I will get to my next point...

As for all of you agianst the movie simply because of what you think is racism: I think many of you fail to see, or just down want to believe the truth. Sure Americans killed many Vietnamese, but the Vietnamese captured soldiers and did do what is depicted in the movie. Perhaps it was a selective depiction of us as the "good guys", and them as the "bad guys", but the movie wasnt to inform you about the Vietnamese. It shows you how people are affected by war, and why it is such a horrible thing. It made me extremely anti-war now, and so I think it conveys a wonderful message. As for Russian roulette... that was to show how "Nick" loses his sanity. He was scared and couldn't bare to do it for the Vietnamese, but his quality of life was so ruined, he began to think it didn't matter...

This is a great movie... don't believe the narrowminded reviewers that gave it one, two, or maybe three stars!

Summary: Haunting Film!
Review: The acting, dialogue, and message of friendship, love, and loss in this fine movie are extraordinary. This film really hit home for me: my brother (who died in Vietnam) and I (who spent almost two years in Vietnam with USO) were raised in a Polish-American family in a little town in western Pennsylvania. Like the characters in The Deer Hunter, our lives were profoundly affected by the war--before Kenny went off to combat, while he was there, and after his body was returned home. You will be deeply moved by this haunting film, even if you have no personal connection with the Vietnam War. Diana Dell, author, "Memories Are Like Clouds" and "A Saigon Party: And Other Vietnam War Short Story."

Review: I dislike long movies and this is a long one. But it is decent and enjoyable for a Saturday afternoon.

Summary: reality
Review: i am getting tired of these people writing how cimino was a racist for depicting the vietnamese in this picture as only sadistic, power-hungry animals, while the american gi's are the good ones with no faults, angels amongst the heathens, if you will. for one thing, what nationality were those dead bodies in the village during that short battle scene? i believe they were vietnamese...hmmm...it's a well known fact that the vc and the nva killed thousands of their own people. that's not an opinion...that's a fact...you can look it up. and, this idea that the americans had no faults is ludicrous. walken became a psychotic individual, bent on self-destruction. stop your folk singing and your flag burning and your draft card burning...that engine is dead. get over it. have some respect and show a little courtesy. The Deer Hunter is not about hating...it is about tearing down the romance of war and showing the gritty details that most of us, thank God, haven't experienced or will never experience if we're lucky. it's a love story. DeNiro let the deer go, didn't he? "Okay?!?" he shouts. get with it, this is a great film.

Summary: very strange and twisted
Review: I usually don't give reviews like this but here goes. This film $ucks! I am a De Niro fan, but not this film. It is very strange and twisted. It is not an action film. This is not a love story. This is not a fun movie. There is no good scenery. I don't consider it a thinking film. Any film where the primary characters play Russian rullet is not a thinking film.
