Summary: some of the greatest films ever, but not the greatest dvds
Review: For those of you who are concerned, the reason The Shining and Full Metal Jacket are not in widescreen is because Stanley Kubrick wanted the films to be shown that way. He supervised during the transfers. I am, however disappointed by the lack of specials features. I'd prefer to buy these discs seperately and get the original 2001 disc with its specials.

Summary: Stanley Kubrick, One of the greatest
Review: I am writing a review of the entire box. I personally think that this box belongs in every video or DVD collection. Without films like, The Shinning, A Clockwork Orange and Full Metal Jacket, the three films I rated highest, You dont have a real collection.

Summary: Kubrick DVD Box is BOMB
Review: Although highly anticipated, the "new" dvd releases in this box set are mediocre and often sub standard. The worst aspects of compressed digitalization are woefully apparent in "Clockwork Orange", "Full Metal Jacket" and "The Shining". Worst of the bunch ,and possibly the worst DVD transfer since "Blade Runner" is "Barry Lyndon". The bit rate for each scene barely moves over 40% for all scenes and there is a lot of motion artifact, digital pixels on faces, shimmering in the purportedly static background, washed out color and marginal sound. Add to that the extremely "cheap" (read - cheap!!) menus and artwork on the discs themselves and you have my vote to return to vhs copies and laser disc on these . The exceptions are "lolita", "2001" and "Strangelove" all of which are from superior transfers. Warners should be ashamed.

Summary: So glad to have it, but wish there was more.
Review: I can't say much negative about this collection because all of the films alone are incredible, but being spoiled by the excesses of the DVD format I do feel like there could've been more. Production notes, behind the scenes footage (like incl on THE SHINING), in-depth booklets (like those with THE KILLING and PATHS OF GLORY), and even keep-cases would've made me happier, but I guess it all boils down to the films in general and not the extras. And what else can I say about them - other than it would've been nice to have had them all widescreen. I have nagging doubts about "Kubrick's wishes" and imagine the studios involved wanted to rush the set and cash in on both his death and the release of EYES WIDE SHUT. I predict that in the near future we'll be shelling out $$$ for "deluxe editions" which give these films the treatment they deserve.

Summary: Thanks for the warning
Review: Thanks for the warning on the bad DVD set - I was ready to buy, but got smart and rented one first.

ouch.

When studios do this they absolutely trash any trust in the production. Thanks to Amazon for allowing user reviews. Maybe they'll correct their error, maybe not - but I'll wait to spend my money and warn all my friends too!

Summary: These need more work.
Review: I too am unimpressed with the transfers. More time should have been spent restoring the source material and trying to do as clean a digital master as possible. That said, they are still great films. The complaints about the full-screen presentations "chopping off" the original picture are a bit ignorant. In fact those films were shot in exactly the ratio we see on the DVDs. They were cropped vertically for theatrical presentation, which is why the misleading "this film has been modified from its original form" message is necessary. You can see helicopter rotors and shadows in The Shining on this DVD because that stuff was out of frame when it was projected on the big screen. Many of James Cameron's films are shot the same way, although Cameron used higher-resolution film stock and took greater care to think ahead about what would be in the top and bottom of the picture when the mattes were removed for video. It's basically a choice between showing those black bars or showing what was behind them, and in these cases Kubrick chose to show everything. (This is the reverse situation of a true widescreen film like Star Wars, where the standard video version is cutting off the left and right sides of the original film.) As for the sound being mono, in that case too you are getting what Kubrick wanted -- he never authorized stereo versions of these mono films.

Summary: Masterpieces !
Review: Brilliantly directed , masterfully scored , great actors , and it has my favorite film , 2001:a space odyssey among the collection . Great gift for any Kubrick fan

Summary: A sham and a disgrace to us who looked forward to it.
Review: How can such a disgraceful outing be reconciled by any studio? How many of us will NEVER pre-order until all reviews have been written and the full story told? Many have already written of the sheer stupidities (picture quality/mono sound/lack of extras) bestowed on this box set by the people at Warner's so let me refrain from repetition and simply agree with them. (I encourage AMAZON to please remove the general description of these DVDs as widescreen, and to list mono sound as the rule for all-except-one of these releases, on the corresponding page.) What should have been a landmark release has turned out to be a shipwreck and to have it happen with Mr. Kubrick's greatest masterpieces is all the more regreatable. I sincerely hope that, with the increasing popularity of DVDs, studios don't begin to cut corners in their rush to release. That could cause a backlash of consumer confidence that could keep this wonderful media from flourishing.

Summary: RIPPED OFF BY WARNER BROTHERS
Review: Because "0" stars means nothing, "1" star means something. And that something is a thing Warner Bros. execs should not be proud of. This set is such a lackluster, rushed disappointment of some of the best films ever to be made. Read every 1 star review and know it to be the TRUTH.

Summary: Avoid this DVD set.
Review: If you love Kubrick's work, then leave this on the shelf, and wait until a re-release. I can't believe that a perfectionist such as Kubrick would have approved this technically sloppy, substandard recording of his art. Otherwise, only buy this from a merchant who will give a full refund!
