Summary: A terrific movie, but a little troubling.
Review: I first saw "Gone with the Wind" back in 1986, and absolutely fell in love with it. After seeing the movie, I read the book in less than a week. I eventually got the video, and have watched it on numerous occasions. But as the years have gone by, I find myself troubled by its portrayal of slavery and African-Americans in general. In fact, I cringe everytime the characters of Pork and Prissy open their mouths- "Whose goin' ta milk dat cow, Mis' Scarlett? We's house servants." Or when I hear this little gem of dialogue: Carpetbagger: "We're going to give each and every one of you 40 acres and a mule. And you're going to vote, and you're going to vote like your friends do." Freedman: "Forty acres? And a mule? GEE!"

I still think "Gone with the Wind" is a terrific movie- one of Hollywood's greatest achievements, but it really shows its age with its racist stereotypes and blatant distortions of slavery and the reconstruction era South. (Let's not forget that Ashley Wilks and Frank Kennedy are involved with some sort of KKK organization which the film sugarcoats as a vigilante protection society.)

I watched this movie again for the umpteenth time last night. I still enjoyed watching it, but I think I'm going to break out my copy of "Glory" to remind myself that the Old South was not just about Cavaliers and Cottonfields.

Summary: A classic but not a classic DVD!
Review: What else needs to be said about the movie that hasn't been written? Unfortunately, the DVD doesn't do this classic film justice. One would think it would be overflowing with extra goodies, but far from it. For that reason I vote 4 stars.

Review: I finally watched this movie and I was very disappointed. The acting was terrible and the plot rediculous.

Summary: An Excellent Movie
Review: Normally, I don't like old movies (except for the classic musicals, which I LOVE!) but, from the first scene of "Gone with the Wind" I was hooked. I love Scarlett O'Hara, I can't imagine any other actress but Vivien Leigh playing her. With the classic love story which will never die and the Civil War scenes. This is an excellent movie and will always remain popular with the public.

Summary: The greatest movie of all time
Review: Everything about this movie is beautiful from the scenery to costumes. You will never get bored of watching it. The only problem was that it was too short and some places it didn't explain enough.

Summary: One of the Most Overrated Films Ever
Review: Gone With the Wind is remember as a great movie because of it's epic scope and excellent production values. But 60 years later when the big budget no longer thrills us, we are left with a decent film but nothing special.

To begin with the entire film is very campy and melodramatic. The whole film is very heavy-handed and over-done. Scenes like where Scarlet crys "I'll never be hungry again" are just plain ackward. Someone should have tatooed the word "subtlty" on Selznick's head.

The script is fairly weak too. It presents a very narrow, one dimensional view of the Civil War. Worse, the Civil War ends half way through the movie and the rest of the film lacks the first half's energy.

Another major flaw is that the characters lack any real depth. Scarlet is cold and nasty through the whole movie. She never changes untill the last two minutes of the movie. There is simply no development. Ashley is noble and his wife is so nice and sweat that it makes me sick. These characters simply aren't human and don't feal real. Probably the only character in the whole movie who actually developes at all is Ret. Sadly, Clark Gable's strong performance isn't enough to carry the rest of the cast.

It should also be noted that Gone With the Wind is very racist at some points. The scene where all the slaves are going off to fight the "evil yankees" is enough to turns one's stomache. Most of the black characters are portrayed as child-like and stupid. The only exception to this is Mimi who does an excellent job and deserved her Oscar.

Gone With the Wind is still an example of fine production values but when you strip away all the lavish sets and money spent on the film, you're left with a rather hollow experiance. While there is no denying that it is a very pretty movie, even today, and it does have it's moments, Gone With the Wind is simply an over-done and campy movie. This film does not deserve to be ranked up there with the likes of Citizen Kane or the Godfather. It's just not that good.

Summary: Where's the 5-Star Version?
Review: I've just watched the magnificent DVD restorations of "Cleopatra," "Lawrence of Arabia," "Ben Hur" and other Hollywood masterpieces. All of them had extraordinary documentaries, screen tests, extras. But what in the world is holding up the 5-star DVD version that all of us fans of "Gone With the Wind" are waiting impatiently for? As 2 other fans have noted, there's nothing extra on the present DVD. A two-minute preview. Wow. Thanks a lot.If studios are able to give spectacular restorations and care to all-time favorites like "Sound of Music" and "Spartacus", then we demand an even more outstanding DVD treatment of the greatest movie of all time. Say, come to think of it, where's the DVD version of "Doctor Zhivago"--another much beloved classic? Get with it Ted Turner, who owns GWTW, and all you other people in charge. We want our 5-star edition of GWTW--like yesterday.

Summary: a poor effort
Review: at no point in this movie does anyone's head explode in flames. truly great films such as welcome to spring break recognize the need for such scenes, but this movie clearly fails to understand the emotional resonance a burning head can create. if you want to see a truly great movie, check out welcome to spring break.

Summary: Well....
Review: The first time I saw it, I hadn't read the book. I thought it was great. Then I read the book and rewatched the movie and saw that it didn't even begin to compare. PLEASE read the book; it's so much better. So much of the plot of the book is omitted in the movie (like, oh, say her children), though when you look at the length of the movie you say, "what?!!" For those of you who just can't understand Rhett's attraction to Scarlett in the movie, PLEASE read the book. It makes the story a whole lot less sappy.

Summary: THE BEST!
Review: YOU PEOPLE NEED TO GET A LIFE IF YOU GAVE THIS MOVIE ONE STAR!
