Rating: Summary: It did not convince me.... Review: Unlike most of the reviewers here and on IMDB, I didn't like it. To me, the acting seemed contrived. I have been in places that operated like this (luckily I was a consultant, not actually working for the company) and I have seen what the actors here attempted to portray firsthand. I think they did their best but it did not 'feel' like the real thing to me. Baldwin's famous speech seemed so scripted to me, the words are right, but the way it was delivered seemed too fake.
Rating: Summary: Top Ten Film of All Time... Review: I have two words for this review..."Jack Lemmon". I think it's a shame that Lemmon didn't get an Oscar for this role. I also believe that the 15 minutes that Alec Baldwin has in this film are the best and edgiest work in his repertoire. I happen to be in the sales profession, although not nearly as smarmy this film, and the dialogue by the INCOMPARABLE David Mamet is some of the best I've ever seen on screen. Let's throw in Al Pacino, Kevin Spacey, Ed Harris, and Alan Arkin for good measure. The best ensemble EVER in my own humble opinion. This movie evokes emotions on every level, from humor, disgust, empathy and sadness. Please, go out and rent it today, or better yet BUY it...
Rating: Summary: An Instance Of Selling Review: 4 cutthoat real estate salesman in a rainy Chicago office competing for one new Cadillac, or a set of steak knives. 2 of them will lose their jobs when all is said and done. That's pretty much the premise for this long running Broadway play by David Mamet set to the silver screen. An all-star cast featuring Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Alan Arkin, Kevin Spacey, Ed Harris and Jonathan Pryce. The material here is not overly exciting on film... but it's the top-notch cast and the sharp dialogue that make the film. High stakes and plenty of anxiety, angst, mistrust and tension. How low will you sink to make the sale... will you keep your pride and morals in tact? Watch the brilliant Jack Lemmon struggle as his character becomes so restless and obsessed with the close of the sale (ABC: "Always Be Closing")... his bartaring comes off annoying (in a lovable loser of a role at best, i.e. George Constanza from Seinfeld, or any Ben Stiller role). You can't help but feel sorry for him. I can not say that this film is "brilliant" or "mesmerizing", or a "masterpiece" as other reviewers have said... but this film is a good watch just for the discussions being had and the actors in their roles (especially if you've been in a commishioned sales job). Replay value - small.
Rating: Summary: Hypnotic Play on the Silver Screen... Review: The frame of mind that occupies the salesmen of a Chicago office is to eat or be eaten. This is the foundation in a male chauvinistic world where manhood is often projected as either a strength or weakness, i.e., one is not a man at all if he cannot close a deal. One of these men is Shelley Levene (Jack Lemmon) who is constantly on the phone due to his daughter's hospitalization. The rest are Ricky Roma (Al Pacino), the constant working salesman, Dave Moss (Ed Harris), the bitter salesman who is never happy, and George Aaronow (Alan Arkin), the nice salesman. These four men work under John Williamson (Kevin Spacey) who is their somewhat green supervisor and who has invited Blake (Alec Baldwin), the downtown consult mogul who makes a seven figure salary. Blake has been invited to remind the four salesmen that they have a month to get their sales up, and the man with the highest sales will receive a Cadillac. The second highest will get a set of steak knives while the two others will be fired. Glengarry Glen Ross is shrewdly written by David Mamet who tells a story that provides a genuine atmosphere where the characters work and interact. The different cast members in the film provide superb characters with different mentalities, and yet with a balance, which enhances the nature of the working environment. In the end, the film will provide an amazing cinematic experience that offers challenges on top of entertainment.
Rating: Summary: Sales Meeting Material! Coffee's for Closers! Great humor! Review: This true to form movie was adapted from the stage yet was done better than any adaptation I've seen prior. The entire movie keeps your intrest with top notch actors like Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Kevin Spacey, the list goes on and on... high intensity and enjoyable to watch over and over. If you're into sales and human behavior I'd recommend you also purchase "Suckers" on DVD and "cars and People, pissing at 60 miles an hour" by Anthony Ziegler a wonderful book.
Rating: Summary: Coffee's for closers!!! Review: Glengarry Glen Ross is a sleeper film that brings a viewer into the often brutal world of sales. It is not solely a depressing film though, as it has so many hilarious moments. The all-star cast delivers a wonderful film for all who are interested not just in the life of a salesman, but in human motivation. After seeing the film, and specifically Alec Baldwin's performance, the following lines will become etched in your mind, "Put that coffee down! Coffee's for closers!!!"
Rating: Summary: It still amazes me! Review: ... Mr.Mamet was absolutely on point when creating the characters for this screenplay. Mr.Lemmon puts on the performance of his life. There is one scene in the rain where he is begging Mr.Spacey to give him the good leads, that is really heart wrenching. This movie deals with multiple levels of being a man in the workplace. Ranging from ageism to managers versus the sales force. This movie by far exceeds the expectations of the viewer and then draws you in by inadvertently creating a mystery movie out of all of the testosterone on the screen. Every person that is involved with commission sales needs to see this movie at least once. Better yet they need to keep a copy on their shelves. It will teach them to be prudent with their money when the times are good, and to buckledown when times are bad.
Rating: Summary: Who is the Glen Ross? Review: I saw this movie and really like it, but I was curious about the title. Who is Glen Ross?
Rating: Summary: extraordinary!!! Review: I saw this film 10 years ago. It's really hard, and sometimes dissapointing for me to love a movie that i haven't seen in a long long time again...well people..this could be the exception. atonishing performences by jack lemmon, ed harris, kevin spacy and al pacino. I can't believe that there is not a cheessy line of dialogue in the entire script ( really hard for an american movie!!!..and i mean it!). Even though this movie is not for everybody, is certaintly one of the best all man dramas of the 90's.....if you like top notch performences and real state...definitly buy this truly work of art.
Rating: Summary: Very good movie, dissapointing DVD Review: Let me say that this is a really solid movie with great performances. I'd give the film itself 4 stars, but docked one for the purposes of this review due to a rather lackluster roster of extras. Two disc set? Come on, some of this stuff is just boring. The all-new "documentary", ABC, is not even about the movie! It's just a bunch of salesman rambling on about their jobs. The commentary from James Foley wasn't worth my time, too dry. But the actor's commentaries are really entertaining and enjoyable. But the Jack Lemmon tribute is a fairly embarrassing piece, one that I will never watch again. That's how I feel about the entire second disc, it'll never come out of the case again. But the movie will, and when all is said and done, that's what matters.
