Rating: Summary: Greatest Movie of All Time Review: Words cannot describe this movie. It is an absolute masterpiece. It is one of Jack Lemmon's best performances. This movie has so much (pardon the expression) balls it'll bring tears to your eyes. To tell you the truth, I almost cried the acting was so good. If you haven't seen a good movie in a while, now is your chance. You're making a huge mistake by not seeing this. I'd give it 10 stars if I could. Unbelievable.
Rating: Summary: A true acting gem Review: I can still remember seeing this movie at the theater and being blown away by all of the performances. Alec Baldwin turns in his most intense performance to date (even though it is only eight minutes long) and it is our first real chance to see Spacey show off his acting chops. Al Pacino is great as the smug, successful member of the group and Ed Harris is awesome (and hilarious) as the hot-head. Even though there is little action and it is tough to define its appeal to someone who has not seen it, I still watch it on a regular basis and enjoy it every time. Watch it soon if you are in the mood to see some great performances.
Rating: Summary: . Review: Easily the best film version of anything by David Mamet, due largely to the well-rounded, exhilirating, and wholly competant cast. They all seem to grasp their characters with admirable lucidity, and the intense, dialogue-driven nature of the play/film give them a lot of room to flesh out these characters to optimum effect. Like almost everything by Mamet, this is abrasive, strangely talky, littered with excessive profanity, and only very gradually builds itself into a dark, captivating boil (which becomes all the more powerful for its subtle, deliberately paced construction.) Not for everyone, but anyone who has seen and liked a David Mamet film really must see this, for it is his best.
Rating: Summary: Glengarry Glen Ross - One of the Ten Best Films of the 90's Review: In 1992, Al Pacino was nominated for an Oscar and won for Scent of a Woman. His work was equally good in this film. Lemmon was superb. I have seen many Jack Lemmon films. This was by far his most outstanding role. Baldwin was intense. Spacey, Harris and Arkin also deliver very strong performances. The drama and dialogue capture you and don't let you go. This movie is a perfect blend of emotion and intelligence, power and passion.
Rating: Summary: BEST WATCHED ON A LASER-DISC PLAYER. READ ON: Review: If you can manage to get your hands on a laser disc player (they still exist, y'know) then buy the Collector's Edition of Glengarry Glen Ross. Not only is the presentation in widescreen (as every movie should be), but you can hear Jack Lemmon and director James Foley give running commentary on alternate audio tracks. That will give you even more insight into a masterful film version of this masterful Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Incidentally, I managed to get Ed Harris to autograph my laserdisc jacket to this movie. This movie in no way got the credit it deserved, and the absence of any Oscar wins (or more numerous nominations) for the cast undermines the credibility of the Academy voters, in my opinion.
Rating: Summary: brilliant and funny! a cult classic Review: Alec Baldwins best movie, oscars should have gone to Jack Lemon and Ed Harris
Rating: Summary: phenominal cast makes this film essential Review: I'm just browsing the library and I stumbled on this film. I thought anything with Pacino is worth it but the fact that he's in a movie with Jack Lemmon, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin, Alec Baldwin, and Kevin Spacey was what sold it. There isnt' a bad actor in the film. While it is a bit on the talky side the dialogue never lets you down. This is a rare kind of film and I recommend it to anyone who likes any or all of the above actors.
Rating: Summary: The Dark Heart of Capitalism Review: This film succeeds on two major fronts. Mamet's characters are appalling, painfully funny, and continue to reveal more of themselves on repeated viewings of the film. The story successfully explores and mocks the grim parasites and forced optimism of the sales world. Second, the acting is extraordinarily good. Jack Lemmon stands out as an old-timer fighting to hold on to his career. Alec Baldwin fascinates as a ruthlessly one-dimensional super-salesman. Al Pacino demonstrates the art of manipulation as he preys on a customer with unconscionable self-interest masquerading as friendship. Ed Harris, Alan Arkin, Jonathan Price, Kevin Spacey round out an incredible cast. A brutal and penetrating look at selfishness and hypocrisy, this film is as enlightening as it is entertaining.
Rating: Summary: ONE OF THE FINEST CASTS EVER GRACE AN ABSORBING FILM Review: Lets firstly be honest, there can be no doubting the fact that the masterstroke pulled off by the casting director gave 'Glengarry' an advantage even before filming began. You simply have to watch in awe as the performances of Pacino, Spacey, Baldwin and particularly Lemmon are reeled off. To simply class this film as absorbing simply due to its cast however would be to do an injustice to a magnificent screenplay from Mamet and focused direction on the behalf of Foley. As Lemmons desperation grows at his pityful leads and Pacino casually works upon another enthralled prospective client you expect the ending to be crystal clear. However the script never allows this to occur as the tables turn on one workhorse to another. An added delight is the surprise Spacey keeps up his sleeves until the end as their seemingly incapable head of sales. The levels salesmen are prepared to go to achieve leaderboard success are a marvel to witness and despite a rather disappointing relaxed conclusion 'Glengarry Glen Ross' creates a fascinating platform for its talented cast to benefit from.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful version of Mamet's play Review: A review of the movie would just say what others have said here. It's great, the ensemble cast is superb, etc. I really wrote this to explain the dialogue others have seen fit to criticize. The repetition, the writing style, is standard David Mamet. It has nothing to do with vocabulary of annoying you. Nobody wants to read a lesson on literary style here, so suffice it to say that if you can get past a different style of writing you'll see a fantastic movie with really powerful performances by a great cast.
