Summary: Famous Captain Tylor
Review: I've heard a great deal about this series prior to viewing it. After watching the whole series I can understand why Irresponsible Captain Tylor had accrued so many fans. It's just plain fun to watch with a interesting cast of characters that are easy to like. The animation is old so don't expect anything special in that department. Story wise the show isn't terribly exciting or funny but manages to tread inbetween. There's nothing really special or outstanding about this series in particular except for the characterization of Captain Tylor. It's unfortunate, but Irresponsible Captain Tylor is beginning to show it's age. Compared to today's anime it pales in comparison.
The packaging for this boxset is pretty disappointing. The 4 DVDs come in a flimsy paper DVD case. The discs are plain and they don't come with any kind of insert.

Summary: The funniest Space comedy this side of the Red Dwarf
Review: Imagine putting Dave Lister in charge of the Enterprise, with Arnold Rimmer as his first officer and you would end up with The Irresponsible Captain Tylor. This series had me laughing from the first episode to the last. Although there was one episode were close friend of Tylor dies which was quite poignant. But, after that, it's back to the silliness. To paraphrase Zelgadis of the Slayers (whose english voice actor, Crispin Freeman, also the english voice of Tylor), "Did you think they would let us make this series serious without a fight?"The humor comes not from slapstick silliness, but from the interactions of the characters. Polar opposites forced to coexist. Tylor, the undisplined slacker, constantly at odds with Yamamoto and Yuriko, the displined pride of the UPSF. Kojiro, who's deathly afraid of girls, having the cute Hanner twins constantly teasing him. The unruly bunch of veteran marines whose attempt at harming their Captain always seems to be interrupted by an untimely enemy attack. The english voice acting was suprisingly good. I dare say the enjoyed the dubbing as much as the subtitled version. I can't wait until the Right Stuf release the OAV on DVD later on this year.

Summary: The right mix of everything
Review: It's pretty hard to categorize "Irresponsible Captain Tylor," just like it is hard to pin down Justy Ueki Tylor himself. As it says on the cover, he is "either a certified genius or a complete fool, but no one can really tell." The series itself is equal parts funny, sad, thought provoking, sweet, romantic and nostalgic. There is nothing unique about these elements other than perhaps the way they all work together to make one of the best anime series I have ever seen. Each of the characters are rounded out and developed, and you just get to LIKE them all so much that it is sad when the last episode plays. Not because anything bad happens to them so much as you will miss them. I consider this series to be on par with Neon Genesis Evangelion in terms of sheer quality. That's a pretty good recommendation.

Summary: somewhat overrated, but not too bad
Review: Let me start by saying that I really like wacky anime. Absurd situations, crazy characters and predictable slapstick all get my approval, and all of these exist in Tylor. Most of the characters are likeable-- my favorites are Yamamoto and Yuriko, slapstick humor is present, if not common, and most of the situations work.
These elements should make for a great series. It's just that, somewhere in there, the chemistry really broke down.
Part of the problem is Tylor himself. While often likeable, his irresponsibility is carried to such incredible degrees as to get annoying at times. He's greatly successful as a captain, but in most cases it's absurd blind luck that pulls him through, which got on my nerves after awhile. A few other characters are annoying in more conventional ways. There's the pathetically corny Harumi, and the twins Emi and Yumi who carry cuteness (and lack of substance) so far overboard as to be painfully irritating. The plot of Tylor centers around a blatantly pointless war between the UPSF (Tylor's side) and the Raalgon, and the result is a wide moral contradiction between the pointlessness of the war and the battle-crazed crew of Tylor's ship, the Soyokaze. The atmosphere that this creates is, unfortunately, distracting from the show's better elements. Finally, Tylor features possibly the stupidest, most idiotic "surprise" ending that I've seen in any anime.
Tylor survives mainly on the appeal of most of the characters. Aside from the few exceptions mentioned above, the crew forms an enjoyable and well-rounded ensemble that can overcome some of the afforementioned problems. Also, the climax of the war (occuring in episodes 20 to 24) is genuinely tension producing and well done.
When all of these elements are combined in Tylor, the result is a passing but disappointing series. I'm honestly not sure why it's so insanely popular. I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone except maybe the diehard sci-fi fan with too much spare time. Anime is expensive, so if you only have the money for one series then skip over this one.

Review: maybe i had too high an expectation from reading the other reviews of this series. while the story definitely has funny moments and some really likable characters, the first and last discs are not that great (or funny): the first being a little slow and the last few episodes a little too cheesy. tylor improves as the series progress but the empress is gets worse, becoming more annoying than minmay, as if that was possible, by being a completely irresponsible arrogant brat. while i liked the story as a whole, i'm not sure it's worth buying.

Review: Reading the reviews for this series, Captain Tylor is usually compared to other space based anime (star blazers, macross, and the like.) I personally have never seen any of these, and captain tylor easily stands on its own. The plot is great, the voice acting is acually good, and of course it is one of the funniest anime I have ever seen. Get it, love it, and find out just how lucky the luckiest man in the universe is.

Summary: Hilarious, entertaining, and intelligently scripted.
Review: Some people, I think, have difficulty imagining that an animated series based on idiocy, slapstick humor, and general gaffs can be considered "intelligently scripted." The series really does go in directions that nobody expects. The dialogue is top notch, as is the quality of animation. It will mostly have you laughing and shaking your head, but it will sometimes tug at you a bit in its more sentimental moments.
Watch Tylor in a group. It's great fun when everybody laughs in the same room. This isn't anime as I would have written it...it's anime as I never thought of before! I can't wait to see the OVAs.

Summary: Fly me to the Moon...
Review: The Irresponsible Captain Tylor series is just what it's title suggests. Tylor joins the United Planets Space Force. Why? Because they will pay him and feed him and he won't have to do anything. Tylor is truly irresponsible. Or is he? As the series unfolds, and war comes to the universe, we follow Tylor in his adventures, as he becomes a Captain of a old ship and a mis-matched batch of unwanted soldiers, pilots and crewmembers.
Is he really irresponsible or is he the only person who happens to be sane and comfortable with himself? This is as much sci-fi as it is philosophy and I really started to enjoy it - but then is ended. Lucky for me, there is a OVA and, I believe, a few movies. I plan to grab them.
26 episodes and OK for most ages. Crispin Freeman at his best - he's Tylor's English voice and it sounded like he REALLY enjoyed it.

Summary: The Ultimate Space Battleship Anime Satire
Review: This is one of the best series I have ever seen. In true anime fashion, it opens with slapstick humor that slowly, like a fine wine, matures into a humorous commentary on life and humanity, still interspersed with silly bits more carefully chosen than in the beginning. If you have seen anime of the space battleship genre (Yamato/Star Blazers, Captain Harlock, Macross), or know about the military, this series will be all the more hilarious as the references and spoofs are brilliantly executed. This is the first full anime series I have bought; it is definitely worth the price.
