Summary: Good anime series... for kids.
Review: I'm a big fan of the Final Fantasy games and also of anime, so when I saw this series available on DVD I rushed out and got the first phrase. It's not a bad series, but it's not for everyone - and it's certainly not something I would recommand to most people. It has interesting characters, amazing music (some straight from the games), and some nicely done animation... But one main thing stops me from liking it, is that it seems to be aimed at kids. The voice acting is afterschool-cartoon-grade, the art direction is cutesy and immature, and the same goes for the plot, which again is cutesy, immature and thin as rice paper.

If you're after a Pokemon or Digimon type cartoon show, then this is for you. However if you're after mature Miyazaki-grade anime then look elsewhere.

Summary: A Highly Under Rated Anime
Review: I've seen this series already and what I must say about it is although Final Fantasy: Unlimited has some flaws, the strong points by far make up for them. The soundtrack to this series is masterfully done, the character designs range from Simple to bizarre but always have character, and the plot is full of mysteries that really keep you pretty well engrossed.

I don't know why a previous reviewer said the focus was on saving the world, because for the most part the focus is on finding the Twins Parents and uncovering the little mysteries about the world in which this anime takes place. The only glaring flaw is that the battle scenes could be better, they tend to resemble the magical girl fight scenes, many people will not mind that but I do and for that reason I cannot give it a perfect score.

Still, it's a fantastic anime that's very much worth the time and money.

Summary: A Huge disappointment
Review: If you are buying this because you are a fan of the games, go away. It puts shame on the Final Fantasy name. Shame on you!!!! The dubbing is terrible, the animation is crude, and the characters are annoying.

Summary: Typical
Review: It's sad that people are going to waste money on this just because it has "Final Fantasy" in the title. This is just your typical anime, but given a big-name title. The character designs are horrible, and the plot is just like all your other series. A dark power takes over the world slowly, and it's up to a single person to save it...but not without making tons of friends on the way. The only thing "Final Fantasy"ish about this series is some of the characters, but even then they screwed them up with terrible designs.

If you don't believe me, do a google search for "FF Compendium". Then look for FF:Unlimited on the side bar. See how terrible everything looks and sounds? They have episode summaries. It sure sounds original. This is just an animated series endorsed by SquareSoft so they can get more money to help the flop that was the FF movie. I think there were 2 or 3 good music pieces in this, but that's all.

Anime really, REALLY needs to get some new ideas. The style's been stale since about 1998. Please, don't buy this. Give money to charity before giving it to this dvd. And now that I gave you the site to look for, you can't say this review wasn't helpful you little fanboys. Get over it. FF isn't the best anything. I've been into the FF series since 1994 when the best one- VI came out. Since then I've seen the series have its highs and lows. The low being FF7 (that's the worst RPG ever made), and its highs- Tactics + X (being the most innovative in the series yet), and this anime had nothing to do with FF but some characters.

Note- if you're offended that I said that FF7 is terrible, grow up. You all just like it and think it's the best because you're new to RPGs and it was the first one you played. Sephiroth was stupid, and not even evil. Stop acting like you know what it takes to be a good villain. Kefka fron FFVI, now that's a true bad guy. At least he did more than take out a main character and burn some miserable village.

Summary: Another disappoint, what a surprise.
Review: Once again I am disappointed. I consider myself very open with anime, but this series really has pissed me off. First lets all think back at the great stories the games provide. The characters and their history, vibrant worlds that were created for each game. Everyone here has their favorite FF game and reasons why they loved it. Think about those reasons, hold in your mind and now compare them to Final Fantasy Unlimited. If you are honestly doing it, then you realize what garbage we've been handed. I am not going to go and try to convice anyone with a long agrument about what pile of dodo this anime is. The only reason this series would get attention is because it has FINAL FANTASTY as its title name. Just think about what I said above.

Summary: Best Final Fantasy Animation so far
Review: Rather than review all the phases, I figure it's best to do the first since you'll be starting off with this one anyway :)

The 'Final Fantasy' direct game series (meaning 1-11) has always been the basis and the best. The spin-off games have always been recieved with mixed opinions, since they can be quite different.

However, the Final Fantasy Animation have always been recieved very poorly. The first anime called "Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals" was in 4 parts and took place after the FF5 video game...the translation of names was inconsistance w/ the later released US video game, needless to say it was pretty bad. We all remeber Sony's attempt to show off the PS2 CG movie...which was terrible.

However, FFU is actually the 3rd and best atempt for an animated FF series. As the games it is a completely new story, but with classic FF elements (Chocobos, Summon Spells, Charcters leave & join the party) so in this aspect it is pretty good.

The English dubbing is also pretty good, though Yu's voice actor always sounds like he reading his lines and they should have used someone else in my opinion (that's quite annoying!).

The story will be enjoyed by anyone who enjoys the games, I would base the character types (like Fungus and other weird one) on a FF6 & 9 level = NOT for everyone as some are silly, I do not believe Amano created them, but that's the overall flavor.

This is somewhat like Xenogears animation (mix of CG & Cartoon) but overall not quite that much...but again you get the idea. 90% is animated with only a few scenes and small fractions with some CG special effects like Kaze's Demon Gun (AKA Magun in US).

Overall don't expect this to be based directly on a FF game. I reccomend it for die-hard Squaresoft/FF fans.

The Japanese version would fir nicely in the "Teen" rating, but sadly the US version is slightly toned down and thus younger children would enjoy it :(

Summary: Different but good
Review: The animation is odd... the hand-drawn is good, the computer animation is mostly good, but together it's not so good. So be prepared.

It's also not entirely for kids... the Magun is so blatantly phallic it's funny.

But you have all the things that make Final Fantasy: chocobos, summoning, a huge plot, and Cid. The four episodes on disc 1 make you wanting more, just to learn what you don't know yet.

Summary: Worst anime tv show I had seen in a few years
Review: The only other FF material I've see is the movie and I didn't play any of the games yet so I'm not basing this review on that. After watching the first 3 dvdsand about 1/2 through the show i can say for me this show sucked.
The animation was bland and ugly looking. The C.G animation which was produced by GONZO was poor and didn't blend in at all. (If you want good works by GONZO check out Full Metal Panic, Vandread, Hellsing, Gatekeepers and a few others).
The plot was seemed to aimed at kids under 12. 2 kids and an adult woman get on a train in an abandoned train station that leads them to a different world. There they meet a strange man(strong silent type). Each episode goes something like this. The kids and woman get off the magic train at a strange place. The bad guy(kid??) sends his minions to where they 3 are. The man in black shows up(approx 7 min left in ep) and does nothing until the kids are in real danger then a light on his gun(attached to arm)turns on and he says "IT HAS MOVED??" yells "SOIL IS MY POWER" (cue in 2 minute transformation sequence where he puts 3 different colored shells in it and shoots ) a creature pops out of the smoke and defeats the bad guy, then he goes away. The kids and woman then get back on train and the show is over.
That happens every single episode and there is very little plot development. Come on at least Pokemon has more of a plot.
This show is clearly aimed for kids 10 and younger which from what I understand is not a big "Final Fantasy" demographic.
Strongly recommend a rental to see if you like it.
