Summary: warner bro. does Kubrick wrong
Review: A great movie, but the transfer to dvd is terrible! The picture quality is excellent as usual on dvd, but it"s not widescreen. Also the mono soundtrack for a war movie is inexcusable. my vhs copy with Dolby pro-logic delivers deep bass and surround sound of battles ,bullets and bombs that blow away this horrible audio transfer, Where is the Dolby5.0 ?

Summary: BAD SOUND, SQUARE PICTURE
Review: One of the best movies made and they destroyed it by putting it in Mono sound and no wide screen. How can they put the Dolby Digital symbol on the box and then have it be Mono. Just another reason to stay away from MGM DVD's. The cheap packaging being the other.

Summary: Needs to be letterboxed!!!
Review: Screen trimming really detracts! Its the only DVD option, and I enjoy the movie so much that its better than nothing - but it needs to be seen in the widescreen aspect ratio to be truly appreciated. If you are a fan of the movie, get it. If you are a fan of the genre but maybe not this movie in particular, stick to letterboxed titles!

Summary: Satire as subtext
Review: Kubrick's one of the few film directors that has managed to incorporate elements of both satire and irony seamlessly into his work. While FMJ isn't Kubrick's best film, it has moments as brilliant as his best.

The DVD transfer is magnificent. The full screen aspect ratio preserves the original way the film was shot (although not the theatrical presentation). Very few extras, but a very good film with a number of powerful moments.

Summary: Classic flick, but poor Dolby 5.1 !
Review: Had to add this classic to the collection, but the "Dolby 5.1" , which is all I collect, is worse than poor! My Sony decoder shows it is created in Dolby 5.1, but don't get it expecting great sound effects! Nothing special comes out of the rear tracks. Maybe a characteristic of old movies? Still, a classic that I will keep.

Summary: Pan and Scan??? MONO??? what is Warner thinking???
Review: Kubrick is dead! Bring back the real thing for home theatre enthusiasts! The original master tapes won't last forever you know.

Filmed in 1:66, it is slightly wider than 1:44 so you do lose some of the film. While this doesn't make much impact in the Shining, it makes a vast difference in Full Metal Jacket (I have a 72" front projection so I do get full frame differences). Also releasing the movie in Mono was a serious mistake. It is recorded in Dolby Stereo and should have been kept that way. Kubrick isn't getting royalties anymore from theatrical releases, so release the real thing. It almost makes me want to boycott Warner Movies altogether, and if Fox ever releases their films on DVD, I have no qualms with following through on that threat.

Warner, I know you read these, so take these words to heart: DTS sound, Anamorphic widescreen, KEEP CASES!!!

Change your ways or lose several dozen customers who buy 5-10 movies/month!

Summary: THE MOVIE IS A MASTERPIECE BUT...
Review: The sound is not good, the image not fantastic, there are no special features but the interactif menu is good. The movie is still great

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Great movie - powerful, but why no stereo or surround sound?
Review: Kubrick's strongest movie ever made. The DVD is a great extension of the VHS version offering clear video. The sound is also cleaner but why no stereo or surround effects? Seems like absolutely nothing is coming out of the rear channels. If you can't wait, buy it. If you can, hope that a criterion version comes out later.
