Summary: Intersting
Review: I cannot watch this movie more than 3 times however the first sight was impressive all I can say about this movie : it is a well designed and directed movie , besides its sfx are very orginal and well.

Summary: One Thrilling Movie
Review: The Abyss is an entertaining underwater adventure with non-stop action. Forty percent of the action footage was shot underwater. The actors actually had to become certified divers.

In the film, an oil rig crew is hired to conduct a search-and-rescue mission when a nuclear submarine sinks to the ocean floor during a fierce hurricane. Throw in a few alien creatures and some mysterious forces, and you have one heck of an exciting film.

The acting is above good, as Ed Harris delivers a remarkable performance as Bud, the leader of the civilan oil rig. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio plays his separated wife who designed the rig, and equals him with her own superb acting.

The movie is loaded with action, conflicts, determination, and a love story in the overall background. The special effects involving the water creatures were outright phenominal. This film keeps you on the edge of your seat, and is an outright heart-stopping thriller.

Summary: Better Hold Your Breath
Review: Here is director James Cameron warming up for his masterpiece, Titanic. Is there any other director who even comes close to the nonstop pacing Cameron is able to sustain? Ed Harris (Truman Show, Apollo 13) brings his underrated, intense, very believable acting talent and pulls off a great performance. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (The Color of Money, January Man) as his wife and co-worker almost matches him. They make a memorable couple. The rest of the cast is quite good, and technically the film is breaks a lot of ground. The DVD version come with a full disc of supplemental material; trailers, analysis of the script, a great deal of material on the technical problems which were solved, casting and the training they required to pull off this movie and much more, all accessed from a neat, fun computerized recreation of the movie set. If there is any weakness to this movie you might say the ending doesn't float as well as what comes before, but that doesn't stop me from saying: don't miss this experience.

Review: Often overlooked in comparison to 'Aliens' and 'Terminator 2', 'The Abyss' took the length and dramatic structure (a long build-up followed by lots of action) of the former, and introduced some of the CGI that would go on to enliven the latter. The effects are uniformly excellent - mainly because most of them are not effects at all, with the cast being put through chlorinated hell for day after day (something that reportedly reduced Ed Harris to tears, and is documented in an excellent, hour-long 'making of' feature) - and in this film you get the impression that nothing else matters much, as the people seem dwarfed by the surroundings. We only connect with the good guys in a basic sense (one of them throws a mean punch, two of them used to be married, and that's it), whilst the villains are almost totally blank, with the except of the mean-looking Michael Biehn, here playing against type as a villain. Astonishingly for a James Cameron film, Bill Paxton is nowhere to be seen. Unwisely, the film has three endings - four if you count the special edition - and the suspense seems to drain away after the death of Biehn's character. The special edition footage adds an extended ending with some impressive effects, although it adds nothing to the drama. Fox seem to understand how to present this kind of film on DVD - there's the aforementioned documentary, plus an extensive look at the storyboards, and you can switch the special edition on and off. The picture and sound quality are as good as I can make out on my television, and although the film itself isn't as fun as 'Aliens', much the same could be said of almost any other film.

Summary: Down to the Abyss
Review: What can be said about the greatest DVD I've seen? Cameron really blows us away with this one which has so many features, not even the casing can list all of them. The fun thing is, you have to find them by climbing through the underwater base. This Special Edition of the film does increase the time by oh, let's say, a good half hour, but it's worth it. I didn't even recognize the new scenes and thought they never should have cut anything. The film is spectacular and is definately on my science fiction favorites. The film stars Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and Michael Biehn who all play it great. The action, science, and drama is all there and need I say five stars is enough? I purchased this awhile ago and still have not viewed all of the features. This is probably the biggest and well worked DVD until this October's Jurassic Park Special Edition comes about. You buy a DVD, I highly suggest you purchase this baby. It's well worth the money and is a great shine on the shelf!

Summary: What Special Edition DVDs are all about
Review: You know how DVDs claim to have special features, and the special features end up being chapter selections and the original trailers - and that's it? Well, The Abyss Special Edition is a model for what special editions should be. When the movie was originally released, the studio thought it was too long and wanted it cut. So Cameron cut a whole subplot of the movie, but it turns out to be the most important subplot. So the disc not only includes the original theatrical release, but the directors cut, which lengthens the movie to almost three hours, but fills in a lot of holes in the plot. The movie, in both versions, is an above average science fiction thriller. Cameron, for all his vision and movie-making skills, is still only an above-average writer. But the DVD includes scores of information that makes the technical achievement of the film very fascinating. There are two "making of" documentaries, one 10 minutes and one 60 minutes. There are storyboards, drawings, and pages of technical information on deep sea diving. Want to know more about if the liquid breathing apparatus used in the critical section of the film is science fiction or science fact? There is a ton of information on the history of experiments in liquid breathing and the possibilities for the future. There is even a copy of the 20 minute special effects video sent to Motion Picture Academy voters to vote on Oscars for the movie.

If you like science fiction movies, you will probably like The Abyss. If you also like to know how movies are made, you will love this DVD. Any studio that calls their disc a special edition without this level of production is guilty of false advertising. The only negative is there is no audio commentary by the director or cast included.

Summary: Did you see the Abyss? Not like this you didn't.
Review: It's hard to top a great film be simply re-releasing it, but the DVD release of the Abyss provides far more than just a movie. There are so many extras pumped into the second CD that anyone with even the vaguest interest in the movie-making industry will want to rush out any buy this one. Sure, there are cut scenes, but there's also the original story treatment, story boards, a video of the construction of the underwater rig, and more. It's simply amazing how well catalogued this movie is. Fans of movie history will want to make sure they pick this one up, and, of course, fans of the Abyss simply must see the cut scenes and experience this for themselves.

Summary: I can't believe that this is James Cameron
Review: First of I love all of James Cameron's work but this movie was really really bad, boring and slow. The aliens in this movie were really out of place, I mean they had like a total of about 5-10 minutes of time in this movie and thats it, they really didn't need to be there. I can't believe that this movie was considered action they was barley any. Also I didn't really think that the directing was very good I mean James Cameron is about the greatest director of our time but he didn't do a great job in this. It over all just was boring.

Summary: Great Movie!
Review: This is a wonderful movie created by James Cameron (Titanic). You may have seen an under-water film before, but never this good. Special effects won an Oscar; and boy did they deserve it! A great show about a petroleum crew on a top-secret mission to find out why a sub mysteriously crashed on the ocean floor...A bit slow at times, and predictable, too. But the acting and effects make up for it! Worth viewing!
