Summary: Exhilarating, lyrical, inspiring - the ultimate film trilogy
Review: The Lord of the Rings film trilogy is a feast for the eyes, a musical tour-de-force for the ears, and, most importantly, good for the soul. This movie experience is thoroughly transporting, carrying us off to a beautifully-realized world of fantasy, drama, and adventure - a world originally designed by literary master J.R.R. Tolkien. What makes this film trilogy so soulful and resonant goes far beyond the compelling performances, the passionately-detailed art direction, and the inspired direction. Ultimately, the Lord of the Rings trilogy is timeless because it accurately captures the bruised, weary, joyful, moral HEART of Tolkien's books. At the heart of Tolkien's trilogy is a deep conviction that life is beautiful, but we live in a tragically fallen world needing redemption. Sound Biblical? It is, because Tolkien was a Christian. What makes the Lord of the Rings trilogy so captivating is its use of fantasy to represent some of the most profound and affecting truths of reality, as described in The Bible. Who ultimately destroys the Ring? The Ring is destroyed by Providence - the sovereignty of a benevolent higher power. What higher level of art can there be, whether in film or in literature, than to inspire us to worship the One who is the ultimate measure of beauty, truth, and sacrifice?

Summary: The best packaging of a series well worth purchasing
Review: If you are reading this, you have probably already read multiple reviews of each movie, so I will not review any individual movie.

This is a set of two disc special editions for each movie in the trilogy. Comes in a handy slip case to keep all the DVDs together.

If you trust the reviews of the individual movies, or have seen the entire trilogy, but don't own any of the DVDs yet - This is the one to buy.

If you already own the first two movies - Don't waste your money unless you are a Lord of the Rings collector. Just buy the third installment.

Best reasons to buy:
1. All five star movies with TONS of extras on the making of the trilogy.
2. Less expensive than buying them individually. For the price you cannot go wrong. This is a series that you must own all three.
3. No throw away sequels like you find in something like The Godfather series (Part 3). All great films

Summary: A Trilogy for the Ages
Review: No modern 90's or 00's trilogy comes remotely close to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Phenomenal movies. These will forever stand as some of the greatest movies of all time. I recommend them to anyone who's looking for a good time. The power of the speech- "There may be a day, when the strength of men fails, but that is not this day..." It's just incredible how Peter Jackson was able to capture this trilogy. Although not totally similar to the books, still incredible movies in their own right.

Summary: Waiting for the Extended Edition Trilogy.
Review: I made the mistake of buying the theatrical DVD for Fellowship of the Ring, and then the extended edition came out later. For The Two Towers, I waited and only bought the extended edition. Will do the same for The Return of the King. I do find it anoying that they release the theatrical version so many months before the version they know we really want, hoping we will go ahead and buy it while we are waiting.

Summary: Oh puh-leeze, if you haven't read the book...
Review: .. you probably won't get the movie. It just can't and doesn't cover all the ground it needs to. Expect to get confused. And if you have read the book, you'll notice the errors they stick out like a sore thumb (for example, ANY scene with Liv Tyler's character... anyone seen Glorfindel?).

Either way the story is nothing to write home about, but the effects are amazing. If you're a Tolkien junkie, this is an essential. The battle scenes - especially the Minas Tirith battle - probably makes it worth it, even if some of sequences (especially with Legolas) do get a bit cheesy.

Also, there's no reason to get the box set if you already have the first two discs, there's no extra content in here.

Summary: BETTER THAN STAR WARS!!!!
Review: Finally, after waiting 20 years, a trilogy that not only rivals but blows Star Wars out of the water!! For sheer emotion, excitment, romance, courgage, this trilogy will never be beaten.

I would advise you wait for the extended edition box set though, each of the extended versions have added so much to these already brilliant films, the extra scenes are paramount to the story. Peter Jackson wanted to release the full version but the studio had it's wait. Buy them to honour Peter Jackson and Christopher Lee, who's Saruman charecter had to be cut from Return of the King.

Thanks for reading.

Summary: The greatest trilogy ever
Review: As an Indiana Jones fanatic who has seen each movie DOZENS of times, I must relinquish the title to the Lord of the Rings. And yes it is superior to the first 3 Star Wars, which went downhill with Return of the Jedi.

LOTR gets better with each film. If you don't already own any of the films, this is the perfect thing to pick up. It will make a great gift also.

However, I am waiting for the extended Return of the King to complete my collection. Maybe next year there will be a mega-box with EVEN more missing footage. WHo knows?

Summary: Wait for the Extended Versions!
Review: I know expectation is extremely high and we're all dying to get the full trilogy, but note this DVD collection contains the "Theatrical Versions" of the three films, that means you're missing out on about an hour and a half or two hours worth of extra scenes from the Extended versions.

Going by the release dates of the first two installments on Extended DVD, I would expect the absolute FULL Trilogy experience to be available in the early-mid Fall 2004, it will be even longer than the Marathon that was shown last December in theatres (it's been said it will include the famous final battle when Saruman attacks The Shire). I think it's well worth the wait since it's only less than 6 months until we can get it and it will be the version you'll want to keep your entire life, show to your kids, grandkids, etc... or at least as long as DVD players exist!

It's such a chliched but true phrase: "it is the Star Wars of this generation". No matter what you think about the story, it is undoubtedly one of the greatest achievements in film ever.

Summary: The Best Book Trilogy Becomes the Best DVD Trilogy!
Review: LOTR is without a doubt the best trilogy ever created. Each movie, FOTR, TTT, ROTK, are excellent on their own and as a united piece are unstoppable. None of the movies have major faults, like bad acting or Ewoks or crappy plot, but stand on their own as amazing features. Really meant to be watched as one very long epic, the Lord of the Rings is the best thing to ever happen to cinema. No more Hollywood garbage, but instead passionate filmmaking from both cast and crew. The eternal themes of JRR Tolkien are fleshed out, and as opposed to other recent trilogies, the amazing special effects (which garnered three academy awards) do not distract from the storytelling, but augment it. Peter Jackson and his crew spent seven years doing a phenomenal job bringing to life the unimaginable. The casting was perfect. The ensemble shines on screen. Ian McKellen and Viggo Mortensen are particularly magnificent. Sean Astin does a superb job throughout the trilogy going from sidekick to heartfelt hero in the final installment. Elijay Wood does an exceptional job portraying a peaceful, happy hobbit descending into madness, ultimately ending up in a conflicted state where his former peace is gone. There is a reason why all three of these movies are in imdb.com's top 10 films of all time. No sane person would want to miss out on the movie adventure of our time.

Summary: An amazing trilogy!
Review: Collected together in one single volume, Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy is a must have for any DVD collection.

Put this next to the "Indiana Jones" trilogy or the original Star Wars trilogy due out in September, 2004 and you will never have to worry about being bored again.

Highly recommended!
