Summary: Amazing!
Review: This film is an amazing example of the power of lunacy. The story is slow, and may turn many viewers off, but if you don't mind allowing a plot to slowly meander it's way around the point, the end result is spectacular, and it's visual strength will astound you. The shot of Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald (Fitzcarraldo) winching a gigantic steamboat up the side of a mountain in the middle of the Amazon while blasting his favorite Caruso opera from the deck in the midst of hundreds of native indians that may want to help, or may want kill him... well, it is like nothing else you have ever seen. And you don't need to suspend your disbelief, because director Werner Herzog actually did this feat live, while filming. Apparently a plot was hatched during this film to kill lead actor Klaus Kinski for Herzog, to put an end to their constant feuds and battles. It never came to fruition, but it is only one of the myths that surround this film. Documented in the film The Burden of Dreams, which I have not seen yet.

Summary: An Achievement in Artful Cinema
Review: This film, directed by Werner Herzog, is a beautiful film, that's imagery, music, and characters will stick with you. The DVD itself is of good quality, as are its extras. Klaus Kinski is magnificent, as are the other actors. I would recommend this film to people who enjoy a movie that makes them think differently about life, and can appreciate this grandiose film.

Summary: A wonderful movie. One of the best I've seen.
Review: This is a fantastic movie. It's not like any other movie I've seen. It has an unusual story, beautiful scenes from the Amazon, beautiful music and Klaus Kinski is fantastic in the lead part, a man who is obsessed by his detemination of building an opera house in the Amazonas, even if it means having to pull a big boat over a mountain. His extreme determination, the natives and the beautiful scenes of the movie makes it so fascinating. And the fact that they actually did pull the boat over the mountain to make the movie, instead of making it in a studio.

I can almost promise you'll love the movie. It's a very fascinating movie, on my top ten list. If you ever get a chance to see this movie in a theater, do so, it's even more fascinating than seeing it on a TV screen.

Review: this is a great film and was made a lot more educational watching it in english and then sub-titled. every foreign film should be released this way.

Summary: a mixed bag
Review: This is an intelligent film, with great cinematography and good performances, but it is too slow. If you liked "At Play in the Fields of the Lord" (another Latin-American-jungle-locale literary film that a lot of people loved, but I thought was slow) then you might like this one.

Summary: Even better on DVD
Review: This is one of my favorite movies and was glad to see it become available again. The older VHS copies were OK, but the new DVD is a giant improvement in quality.

Read the other reviews if you want to know what the story is about. I guess what impressed me most is that no special effects were used, they really did everything in the story.

Summary: amazing film - extraordinary film making and beauty
Review: This is the most amazing film I have ever seen. I originally saw it in London when it was first released, and a London Times review said that the film "expanded the borders of film making". The film is about an obsession - bringing the opera to South American jungle. But when you consider Herzog and his obsession in making the film, it takes on added depth and dimension.

Truly one of the world's great films, and my personal all time favourite film ever!! Watch it.

Summary: An adventure film classic!
Review: This movie should be seen by anyone with a spirit for adventure. It, along with "Burden of Dreams" about the making of "Fitzcarraldo," is one of the best combinations for an evening of film viewing. Be sure to watch "Fitzcarraldo" first, then be surprised by some of the revelations in "Burden of Dreams."

Summary: Who Is the Most Obsessed Person?
Review: This was the big question after viewing this film. Was it the character of Fitzcarraldo played by Klaus Kinski who insisted on hauling his ship over a mountain to try and realize his dreams or Werner Herzog, the filmmaker, who insisted on doing the same so his movie would be authentic in every way? Let's just say that both men, fictitious and real, are about as obsessed as people could be and in need of the strongest OCD Rx in existence. However, the imagery is gorgeous and haunting and Kinski himself is ethereal and fleeting before us here. Is it better or worse than "Aguirre, the Wrath of God?" I can't answer that. Neither film could have been made by anyone other than the Herzog-Kinski duo and come out looking and feeling like this. I can't imagine not seeing both films and being mesmerized throughout.
