Summary: a warning for those with weak stomachs...
Review: Although this is a beautifully made film, I feel compelled to warn those who are horrified by images of violent and painful death that they may find parts of this film deeply disturbing. I found the graphic slaying of a pig early in the film almost as sickening as the discovery of the three dead children towards the end. If you enjoy wallowing in melancholy and can take scenes like these, or manage to avoid them, you might enjoy this tale. It is finely acted, beautifully filmed, and, before the big tragedy strikes, offers some joyous moments amidst the hearbreaking longing and disappointment.

Summary: One of the best Kate Winslet films I have ever seen!
Review: This movie, in my opinion, is a must-see for all Kate Winslet fans. From her dramatic scenes with Chris to turning a cigarette into a smoke-stack, her performance is unbelieveable. She's gifted from God as far as I'm concerned! Though this is an independant film, this is the sort of film that will grab your soul and tear it to shreds! It's a very good film. I'd recommend it to anyone!

Summary: the best film of 1996
Review: It was a great year for movies. 'The English Patient.' 'The Whole Wide World.' 'Breaking the Waves.' So many great ones. This was the greatest. I will never forget the night I saw it at the Lincoln Theater - the most beautiful and, I believe, oldest theater in Wyoming. I left the theater shaken by the haunting and lonely shriek of the final violins. I stood on the street corner in the falling snow and noticed how the streetlamps throughout town gave the city an orange glow, like it were on fire from within.

There is, perhaps, no character in literature or film that I identify with more than with Jude Fawley. His story is a heartbreaking one, as is that of Sue. I don't know that I've ever seen a more wrenching film. And so eloquently done. Winslet and Eccleston both defined these characters - if ever there is another adaptation of the Hardy novel, the performances will be judged against these. The score was as dark and glorious as any score I've ever heard, comparable in its painful beauty to Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman's work on 'The Last of the Mohicans' and to James Horner's main theme from 'Legends of the Fall.' Michael Winterbottom and Hossein Amini could not have done better at paring down the novel to its tortured heart. It's almost as if the novel communicates even more clearly what Hardy nailed in his prose. The cinematography - I have never felt so cold watching a film as I do every time I watch the first spare, stark minutes. I was destroyed when this was snubbed in every Oscar category, as it was and is a far better film than 'Fargo' and others. But it is in good company in being overlooked for the awards it deserved - 'Legends of the Fall,' 'A River Runs Through It,' 'JFK,' 'Little Women' - all films deserving of sweeping the Oscars, all having failed to do so.

The movie is not an easy one to watch, but there are few films as important and timely as this one.

Summary: Fantastic movie!
Review: This is my favourite movie, but I found the beginning black and white parts very boring. It got much much better when Jude sees Sue for the first time. My mum cried her eyes out when she watched it, as did I and every person I know who I reccomended it too END

Summary: off-the-beaten-track
Review: I must comment on this even though all of the other reviewers' comments were very valid. I have seen this movie so many times b/c the story is very different and the actors are awesome. I recommend reading the book if you have not b/c it helps understanding of the movie better. Kate is just awesome as are Christopher and June (from Ab Fab fame). END

Summary: The movie and book are excellent
Review: I am a huge Kate Winslet fan, and I had heard about this movie so I really wanted to see it. I had read that it could be very hard to watch, but I found it riveting. It drew me in so that I cared so very much for the characters and what was happening in their lives. I was so moved by it that I didn't really know how to describe it, I just knew I wanted everyone to see it. The best way I could think to describe it is terribly beautiful, or beautifully terrible. I am a firm believer that Kate should have been nomitated and won an Oscar for that movie. And then I had to read the book too. I didn't like Thomas Hardy when I was in high school, but I have a much different viewpoint of things now than I did then, and I found the book to be as emotional and beautiful as the movie. I would definitely recommend watching the movie before reading the book, but I urge anyone to do either or both. END

Summary: Oh so wonderful and emotionally draining
Review: This movie. Well, what can I say. I myself being a big Kate Winslet since 1994 with her first movie, Heavenly Creatures, decided to check this one out. I couldn't find Jude at any local video rental stores so you could image how excited I was when my friend told me she ound it at the bookstore. Imediatly I went and bought it. It took me about a week to watch it, and when I did, I was a mess. This movie brings you beyond crying. You feel every emotion possible. This is perhaps, in my view, the best movie of all time. I would recommend it to almost anyone, but you must be an emotionally strong person to watch it. I have recently purchased the soundrack online for Jude, really, its the music that brings the tears to our eyes and the pain to out hearts. END

Summary: My Personal Favorite
Review: When I first saw this movie it was so emotionaly wretching it made me sick. Kate Winslet give the performance of her career. She and Christopher Ecclestson play their parts so beautifuly. For those of you who though Titanic was sad, you will weep and gnash your teeth by the end of this movie. And no matter how sad you think the movie is, it still has a happier ending than the book! SEE THIS MOVIE! READ THIS BOOK! END
