Aeva May and Rosemarie Ford were excellent at their characters,[ Bomby and Demeter] Victoria the white cat was excellent at her solo dance. Jacob Brent is very cute and a very good dancer! Summary: A great family musical!
Review: Well, I must say I was kind of surprised when I saw the DVD version of "Cats". I was impressed at how much sharper and clearer the sound was then on the VHS version. And I enjoyed the sharp picture. I was very pleased with the buy. Of course, I have always loved the "Cats" musical, ever since I was five years old. I had seen it twice live in the theater and didn't hesitate in the buying the video when it came out. I finally got a DVD player for Christmas and this was the first DVD I watched. I liked how much better quality it was. I guess I'll say a little about the musical itself. I think that this is a great family movie to watch. I know, as a kid, that I LOVED watching all of the cats dance around on stage. The best part about this video is that they show close-ups of all the cats at one point or another. I always ended up in the back when I saw it live. Here, I was able to see the facial expressions and little things that I wouldn't have been able to see in the theater, such as the cats rubbing against each other and pawing each other and things like that. I was impressed with the cast itself as well. Phyllida Crowley-Smith played Victoria, the white cat. I enjoyed watching her dance quite a bit. She had several solo dances and she caught my eye in every dance. I also enjoyed watching Jacob Brent as Mistoffolees. He is quite good at both dancing and singing and I would have to say he is probably my second fave cat. All of the cats were loads of fun to watch and, aside from all that, I especially enjoyed "The Making Of Cats" on this DVD. It had a lot of info and even footage from the 1981 version of the London stage production, the very first. All in all, I highly recommend this video.

Summary: Cats is an awesome movie!
Review: "Cats" is probably one of my favorite movies. I have always loved the musical, ever since I was five years old. I saw it live twice and didn't hesitate in buying the video. I was very pleased with the buy. Both times I saw "Cats" live I was close to the back of the theater. In the video, I was able to actually see the expressions and the little things that the actors do to look like cats, such as rubbing against each other and cleaning themselves. The music was all re-recorded and there were a couple of people that have been in "Cats" before that were on the video. Elaine Paige was Grizabella like she was in the Orginal London Cast. Ken Page played Old Deuteronomy. He was in the Original Broadway Cast. I loved watching all of the cats. Mistoffolees was very cute and it was fun to watch him dance. Victoria, the white cat, was a very beautiful dancer and the solo dance that she did was one of my favorite parts in the movie. The Rum Tum Tugger was absolutely hilarious to watch. His personality was my favorite and he had a nice singing voice as well as all the right moves. Most of the cats were a lot of fun to watch, especially the big dance that they do right before the end of Act One in the live show. You can see close ups of most of the cats and it is very entertaining to watch the facial expressions. Goodness, I could go on forever about each cat but I won't. Get the video and watch it yourself. You'll be able to pick out your favorite cat pretty much right from the start. I definitely recommend this video for anybody. A great family movie.

Summary: Cats - The Musical
Review: Is it just me, or does the audio track on the DVD version seem much slower in terms of tempo and slighter flatter in terms of pitch than the VHS version or the version I saw on PBS. Even when comparing the tempo of the audio on "The Making" section of this DVD, the audio in the main production section seems sluggish.

Aside from that, and the constant "MTV" type editing (which by the way drives me crazy since the camera doesn't seem to stay on one image for more than 2 seconds), I enjoyed this production, especially the music.

Summary: Cats the musical
Review: This is truely the greatest musical ever made. It has drama, lots of fun songs, a wonderful cast line up, beautifully designed costumes, exotic makeup, great dances, wonderful music, and is really fun for all ages. When you watch this you really do become one with the Jellicle tribe. You are taking a journey into a fantacy realm and into the mystical world of Cats. It really makes you feel young. It teaches you the values of forgivness, and understanding, and that no matter what you may have done in your life to someone, or vice-versa that one should always forgive. This video for a matter of 2 hours plus tells you to let go of the outside world and all of its chaos, and let your imagination run free. On the DVD version you get an added bonus, the behind the scenes of Cats called 'The Making of Cats.' They show you old clips of the original London stage production from 1981, as well as the present. They have cast interviews, and a few more tid-bits. This video has turned the longest running musical on Broadway and in London, into a global phenomenon. Experience Cats on video or on DVD for yourself, and Let the Memory Live in Your Hearts Now & Forever.

Summary: Cats..forever, and ever, and ever!
Review: As a huge fan of cats before the video release, I was a little hesitant...and even more so when I only saw a clip of the video...but I found I was pleasantly surprised. While not perfect, the video is enough to satiate my desire to see it..especially when I am several hours from Broadway and can't afford to go see it every day!

While the editing is, at times, poor and choppy, you can still enjoy the dances and see the expressions on the actors faces much better. Who would have thought humans could act so much like cats! It was a disappointment to see Growltigers' Last Stand not in there...I would have thoroughly enjoyed seeing this "memory" of Gus's played out with a younger actor...but even without it the production is full.

John Partridge as Tugger...well, enough said. He steals the show everytime he's onstage! He keeps me rolling on the floor with his sometimes over the top performance, making Tugger lovable, despite his curious ways. Jacob Brent as Mistoffelees...another actor who's performance is a showstopper. I do wish they had not cut out the dance scene and made him "disappear" like they did...for the amazing dance routine is half of what makes Misto so magical! His endearing portrayal shows you with every moment how lovable, kind, and playful Misto can be.

To keep it short the only other actor I will comment on is Rebecca Parker as Cassandra. Her subtle way of drawing her attention to this cat keeps me transfixed..I sometimes forget to watch the other cats! She is a fine dancer who takes part in all the dances, and with gusto! And has anyone but me noticed that Tugger always escorts her down off her perch (Skimbleshanks and Journey to the Heaviside Layer)!

All in all, the video is something that I enjoy watching...and it tides me over between live shows. If you are able to overlook bad editing..get it. You will enjoy it! and if you've never seen it before...it will draw you into the world of cats..and you will never want to return!

Summary: Absolutely Awful!
Review: As an avid fan of the musical CATS, I eagerly awaited the release of this video. However, I'm glad I rented this piece before I bought it. Renting it made me decide NOT to buy this gut-wrenching adaptation of Webber's spectacular musical. Why do I so dislike the video? Well, mainly because the main characters--i.e., Grizabella, Rum Tum Tugger, Old Deuteronomy--are portrayed by actors which are either not the part or whose days of passionate singing are over. Elaine Paige, for example, sounded a hundred times better on the Original London Cast of CATS than she did on the video. And so did Ken Page as Old Deuteronomy (he was on the Original Broadway Cast). And John Partridge . . . not the part! Every Rum Tum Tugger I've seen on stage was much better than Partridge. But I think the worst crime this video commits is to exclude "Growltiger's Last Stand." They couldn't do this scene because it would have been too much a physical strain on the elderly Sir John Mills--the man cast to play Asparagus. The production team of the CATS video was obviously more concerned with a big name cast than with a QAULITY cast. And the consequence was a second-hand adaptation of a first-rate stage musical. This video is indeed deja vu of A CHORUS LINE. If only I could rate this video with -5 stars . . .
