Summary: Take This Train
Review: An interesting and compelling movie, this Patrice Chereau`s ("Intimacy") effort is a deep and subdued story about different kinds of relationships. Many individuals who are somehow connected (family ties, friendship, love) reunite on a train in order to attend a funeral of a loved(?) one. During the process, shades of the past unfold and old wounds appear again, making for some dramatic moments and tense situations. A low-key, subtle and realistic cinematic experience, "Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train" offers a solid character study with convincing acting and a stellar soundtrack (P.J. Harvey, Jeff Buckley, Portishead, Cake,...). It`s an uneven movie, though, as some scenes drag a bit, the connections between a couple of characters aren`t quite clear and the ending could be better. Still, this picture is worthwile overall and suceeds at presenting a melancholic and urban look into dysfunctional families.

Good cinema.

Summary: contemporary French cinema at its very best...
Review: As a French living in America, I would like to recommend this movie to the American viewers who really want to know what French cinema is about TODAY, and to show how extremely powerful it can be. "Those who love me..." is one of the best modern French movies I have seen in the past ten years. It is equally complicated, nervous and fascinating. When it comes to truly observe people's relationships under a microscope without complacency and cliches, Chereau proves to be a master. His cast is, as a whole, sublime. Getting on the train to attend a friend's funeral, a group of individuals brings in their resentments, sadness and personal problems that will slowly unravel as the journey goes further, not to find resolutions or even endings, but a coming to light that could be one or the other, a resolution or an ending, for some of the characters. The topics of homosexuality, transsexuality, drug abuse, or even the eternal issue of family conflicts, are approached under a most realistic angle that by no means tries to aspire to a sociological study status, therefore sparing us from any possible boredom! That aspect of the movie only, its lack of pretention, is extremely refreshing. The movie has an impeccable rythm and a dynamic soundtrack that are both adding up to the perfection of the filming itself.

Summary: Should not come up under Lesbian Title
Review: I originally read very good reviews about this movie. It came under a "Lesbian Search" don't let the cover fool you...it is a transexual and straight woman...whose relationship is nothing but support after the death of a character not seen. I did not like it, perhaps I was biased about the lesbian thing. However, I find that it was unbearable to find people talking about a dead guy who seems to have seduced the lot of them. Lesbians, unless you want to find the meaning of "death" and ponder latent desires for a man...don't buy this film.

Summary: Terrible Sub-Titles - A Disappointing Film At Best
Review: I'm not sure about the film some of these other reviewers saw, but I could not stand this movie.

For one thing - one very critical thing - it's got some of the most UNREADABLE subtitles ever!

Which, I'm sure, added to my complete lack of enjoyment.

I'm an Independent Film fan and I was looking forward to seeing this movie but it's disconnected and at times, just unwatchable.

The story meanders and the lighting isn't so great either.

I was very disappointed.

Be careful if you're planning on purchasing this DVD.

Try to rent it first - check the foreign section of your favorite video store.

Best Regards, turtlex

Summary: An exceptional movie, but a horrendous transfer!
Review: Quite simply, this is the worst DVD transfer I've ever seen. In reference to the other reviewer's observation concerning the film's "poor lighting" all I can say is blame it on transfer, not the director. The film is every bit as good as, say, Magnolia, and is deserving of at least a 4 1/2 star rating. However, owing to the unreadable subtitles, I'd be loath to recommend this movie--even for rental--to anyone who doesn't speak French.

Summary: a jolt
Review: Things went left and right and back again causing whiplash but I couldn't take my eyes off it even when I had no clue what was going on. It didn't matter because I needed to watch it through to the end. And I did.

Summary: Very Interesting.
Review: This movie is about the gathering of a variety of friends, ex-lovers, and family, for the funeral Of Jean-Babtiste. It is filled with every type of people, from a gay love triangle, to a man turned newly woman, to a failing marriage, etc etc etc... It is interesting, and well done...
But the subtitles are a little hard to read...
