Summary: A WONDERFUL MUST BUY/RENT
Review: I saw this wonderful piece of Art on the big screen in 1999. There are not enough words to discribe this beautiful love story. It remained with me weeks after I saw it. A must see. Do not miss this overlooked poignant masterpiece.

Summary: Very good but bites off more than it can chew.
Review: I was very touched by this story of love and heartbreak. Aidan Quinn's name was what made me jump at staying up late near St. Pattie's Day to watch it on Bravo. I want to buy this on DVD very soon so that I can catch all of the movie because I know that it was edited for TV. The lush country side of Ireland is so beautiful and I hope to research my family roots one day in Ireland as James Caan did in this movie. I wonder what hearache and love I'll find....

Summary: This is the best movie I've EVER seen.
Review: I've seen a lot of movies in my life, but none have moved me as much as this one. I can't believe that it was so ignored this past summer --not one of the "blockbusters" this year (or any year) can compare. The old woman's flashback to the beautiful love story is enough to rate this movie as a 5-star. When you add the subplots of a man looking to learn the truth about his father, as well as a wayward nephew looking for his place in life, it becomes a timeless tale that will move the hardest of hearts to tears. This is one of those movies that you think about for days afterwards. Also, watch for the comic relief mid-movie by the parish priest -- it's a hoot for Catholics & non-Catholics alike!

Summary: Great Irish Romantic Tragedy
Review: In a lot of the time-split movies I've seen, the present story is never as interesting as the past one, which is the case with "This is My Father." The present story revolves around Kieran Johnson (played by James Caan), a middle-aged Chicago high school teacher, as he travels abroad to Ireland with his teenage nephew, Jack (Jacob Tierney), in search of his unknown paternal roots. Upon arriving, Kieran Jr. learns of his father, Kieran O'Day (Aidan Quinn), via the Irish fortuneteller they're boarding from.

The movie then switches periodically to the summer of 1939, when Kieran Jr.'s young mother, Fiona Flynn (played by Moya Farrelly), returns from Catholic school and resumes her friendship with Kieran Sr., only to have it blossom into a forbidden love affair. Why their relationship is taboo is never fully explained, though the Catholic church, Kieran Sr.'s being a "poorhouse bastard", and their age difference are vaguely touched upon. However, a lot of it's left up to the viewer to draw their own conclusions.

In addition to the lack of any major taboo, I thought the past story between Kieran Sr. and Fiona would have been better at the forefront of this movie. It was certainly more entertaining than watching Kieran Jr. brood or Jack flirt with two local girls (or, rather, they were flirting with him; he just looked lost). But despite the little things, "This is My Father" is a great movie. It has a somewhat predictable demise at the end, but it's still sad enough to interest fans of romantic tragedies.

Summary: A really touching movie
Review: In this move James Caan, a burned out high school teacher, travels to Ireland to learn about his father, long since dead, whom he never knew. This is a well done and very touching movie. It would be hard for someone to watch this movie and not be moved by many of the characters in the film. I usually don't go much for this type of film because they usually are hard to relate to any not very realistic. This is one of the few movies of this type that is realisticly done. That makes all the difference.

Summary: Romance and Tragedy
Review: It's amazing that Hollywood can still create such stories of true love. All the while, halfway through the movie you can guess the ending, but like any sports rerun, you still want otherwise. I just saw this and it broke my heart, to think that a land and a time like this was real, where even the deepest of loves could be crushed by the harsh realities of the world. A sad way to find your history becomes a tragic romance, in a story where the truest expression of emotions may be the most sincere and romantic I have heard. This is a must for the women, and for the men who have forgotten how to be men, and for the lovers who are trying to rekindle. The only disappointment is where the tragedy ends.

Summary: A real tear-jecker
Review: No matter how many times you see this, It will make you cry. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. If you wish to seen a movie that goes to the pit of you heart this, and Sophie"s choice are the two. Reminds you want in the end is most impotant.
