Review: This is a very moving film, universally appealing and yet, very Czech. There are fine performances by the leading actors, and the solemness of parts of the plot is balanced by dashes of humor here and there and the simple sweetness of little Kolya. Highly recommended.

Summary: Beautiful and moving
Review: This is not a movie; it is a film, almost a work of art. Zdenak Sverak does a wonderful job as the slightly curmudgeonly cellist, and Andrej Chalimon is perfect as the young Kolya of the title. The film slowly yet marvelously follows the development of the relationship between the two characters. The music that follows the scenes is wonderfully written, I highly recommend that fans of the movie buy the soundtrack as well. This is my favorite film of all time, American- or foreign-made, and one that nobody should miss.

Review: This is one of the best movies I've ever seen. The little Russian boy is a fantastic actor for a six year old, and I'm thrilled that, unlike most American movies, this director and writer portrayed a TRUE six year old, not some precocious Hollywood-esque monster. Also, unlike many films, this film is honest in its portrayal of character development -- there's no immediate "gee he met a kid and now he's perfect" silliness. SEE THIS MOVIE!

Summary: THE foreign movie for people who hate foreign movies
Review: This movie has so many layers to it that anyone can enjoy it. On the surface, it is a sweet movie with a really cute kid. Deeper down, it is an interesting portrayal of the end of the Soviet occupation. There are many memorable characters here, not just the main ones. I laughed til I cried at the "good cop bad cop" act of the secret police (who couldn't even remember he no longer played for the symphony). I was frustrated with his mother's hate of little Kolya. And I was surprised at the friendly, indeed sympathetic, portrayal of the Russian soldiers. No matter how you look at it, there's something here for everyone. An appealing movie.

It is an masterpiece and deserves all the awards it received.Kolya won the Academy Award for the Best Foreign Language Film of 1996.One thing that makes this movie stand out is that it was not dubbed with English over the Czech language. So what if you have to read the subtitles. This way you can enjoy the film as it was made.
