Summary: Horrifying
Review: I don't know whether to give this movie five stars or none. As I watched it through the first time I felt sick at the grotesque horror inflicted by the serial killers. The second time I had to leave before the serial killers even came on the screen I couldn't view the family as happy (esp. the mother) knowing what would become of them. The only way I could describe my feelings during it is to compare it to what I should imagine it would be like to watch be forced to watched someone struggling for life, maybe their drowing and despite their calling for you, you are forced only to sit there and watch.

I sat through all sorts of movies others find repulsive such as The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover or Salo, and though they stirred my emotions it is only that I find I cannot stomach.

Summary: funny games until someone gets hurt
Review: I finished to film hours ago, and i can tell it will be with me for the next few days to come. if you decide to watch it, you may want to watch it again just to catch all the little details you missed while reading the subtitles. this film just brings to light how bad american cinema is in its present state consisting of mtv editing and scripts writen for people with ADD. funny games keeps your gut tied in knots with anticipation and then gives you plenty of time to think about what you just watched once the games are played. be patient, and co-operate with the plot and you won't get hurt, and please don't be afraid to share it with a friend.

Summary: Don't read the low rated reviews-they'll kill any surprise!!
Review: The English subtitles CANNOT be removed!! Just thought I'd warn you-could be irritating if you know German.
I just watched this video and wanted to add that missing info. Then I decided to read through the other reviews. Pretty apalling how so many people want to give away everything. Unless you hate surprises, only read the reviews with high "helpful to you ratings"-most of them were decent enough not to spoil everything. (But don't read too many of them.) I enjoyed this DVD. Not the usual hostage flick with extremely stupid victims. Seemed hard to watch at first, but that feeling went away. If you want dumb and predictable, get one of those brain dead Halloween flicks...

Summary: Very well directed / pointless violence
Review: The two stars are for the directing. It is nicely filmed, and creative. That is all I can say that is even remotely redeeming about this film.

The film reminded me of a 70's slasher movie called "The House by the Lake", in which the subject of domestic terror is explored. This film is excessively, physically and psychologically violent. It is gratuitous not in it's portrayal of gore, but in it's senseless portrayal of human evil and base cruelty. Perhaps this is the point of the film, and if so, it is a point best left unmade. Clearly, the television news illustrates this for us on a daily basis.

If I were to categorize this film for an unsuspecting viewer, I would call it a Suspense / Horror film. Basically, you would then understand what you are getting into. For it's genre (strictly speaking: Suspense / Horror), it is very unique and interesting, causing the viewer to question their desire to watch such films. Otherwise, stay away. Very disturbing and unnecessary.

Summary: How would you like to see a car wreck?
Review: Imagine a movie that claws at your prurience for violence, with nothing funny about the unrelenting torrent of "games". Funny Games wouldn't lend itself to fit the "horror" shelves of your video library, but it's tightly wound tense scenes sport a shocking affinity to the genre. Expect to witness a chain of bloody aftermaths complete with shrill tracks of screaming from hapless victims accompanied by supposedly comical head-scratching from their perpetrators.

I'd say this is the cinematic equivalent of a horrid car accident -- it is messy, violent and never something you'd want to be a part of, but as a spectre it commands an almost morbid voyeuristic curiosity that eggs you on to keep looking in awe.

Unlike a lot of commentators of the film though, my somewhat negative reaction isn't based on feeling morally gyped or anything quite as magnanimous as that. I just did not think this was a good film.

Haneke attempts to convey a serious message, but does so with all the shallow stylistic vacuity of any Hollywood blockbuster. Virtually nothing is done with the tableaux ruthlessness, and his entire objective with the film appears to be to play off the audience's lust for violence and anticipation. This message is clear from the start but about an hour into the movie it becomes excruciating.

Those with an appetite for destruction and mayhem can watch it, it just may hit a nerve as some of the set-ups are actually quite well pulled off. But the rest of us can consider skipping this disturbing flick. Or watch it on a bright leisurely afternoon followed by something light and humorous, like a Bush campaign speech.

Summary: Great Flick - must see
Review: I watched this movie with my cousin, having known absolutely nothing about the film (expected a family comedy) which made it a LOT more shocking and disturbing.
Yes, the remote control scene is nerve-racking because for once in the story...the viewer wants to shout out a "YEAHHHHH!" but then is taken aback by the surrealistic reverse of events.
Here for once, it's the bad guys that win...and it's not that bad an ending (as dark and sinister as it may be).

Summary: A cinematic masterpiece
Review: This makes most so-called "thrillers" seem like Walt Disney features.
Part of the unsettling genius of the director is the use of sound. The opening scene contrasts Mozart and John Zorn. Outstanding NON- USE of sound too. Touches, such as the wearing of white gloves by the duo, are brilliant. Must be seen uninterrupted from the very beginning. The casting is faultless. Moral? Evil resides in the ordinary. Be alert to it!

Summary: Pleased me, but not at all
Review: After i read most of the reviews posted here i felt some "curious" about this movie, so i decided to bought it, then it arrives and i felt a little scary to see it, at last i watch it and i find that is a "new breed" of thriller, not shocking at all, to be realistic i was expecting something more disturbing after what i read, but its a good movie you can watch it and go to the bed without nightmares or something like that.

Good movie, good performances, remote control scene [is bad], too much still camera footage, in average i think 3 stars it's the right ranking, nice effort Haneke! it entertains me for a while.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Unusual, but refreshing good movie.
Review: This definitely is not a flick you go and see on the multiplex one friday. It is weird, interesting, and yes, somehow shocking (although not that much). Go ahead and watch it without fear, you may find it very "entertaining" (not in te most common sense of the word anyway).

I'd given it 4 stars, but the remote controller scene is a -1.

Summary: Repulsive
Review: Now here's a movie which has everything it takes to ruin your evening . Funny Games is a film about two young men who take over the country-house of a family of three and start trashing their personallities while at the same time hurting them physically . Is it a thriler ? Yes . Is it gripping ? Yes again . Yet it's a schockingly heartless one .

There are many things here which will irritate the average viewer : the lack of motivation of the two killers , the conclusion of the film and especially the director's choice to take away from us the only scene which gives us some pleasure by " rewinding " it are just some of them . Even if there is actually a message in this piece of moviemaking ( two - three lines about real life and fake reality minutes before the end ) it doesn't worth watching a film which messes with your nerves as much as this one in order to get it .

Funny Games was highly praised by critics when it came out . It's an extreme film . And extreme things always find a certain audience to love them . That doesn't change the fact that it's a deeply unpleasant offering by Haneke . And here is the time for the rest of us who didn't find Funny Games appealing to chose which kind of " bad " movies is the worse : a thinly plotted , clumsy-made teen romance which you forget days after having seen it or a provocative thriller like this which stays in your memory for al the wrong reasons ?
