Review: Monty Python, they started out doing TV skits in Britain before they began to make great films like Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The skits are some of the most hilarious things I have ever seen and I watch SNL. There are skits included such as "How not to be seen" Which is funny as anything, in which, John Cleese narrates and the individuals who stand up are shot (you don't see blood or anything so its a bonus of those of you with kids.) It continues on through the movie with the most popular skits ever done by the great group of englishmen. I have seen this movie countless times and I'm still not tired of it. So enjoy this movie, I always do.

Summary: Almost Completely The Same... 'Cept Different
Review: Okay, so it's not really "completely different". It ain't even "half different", really. All right, all right-more like "mostly the same". Except for a few new animated between-vignette breaks and some slight alterations to a few of the sketches, this film adaptation of MPFC®'s more notable bits is hardly something new or different. There, you happy now? But wait a minute-- if I recall my research correctly, "...Completely Different" was among the first MPFC presentations to be exported from the UK. And to those who actually bothered to file into their local cinema houses to see it, this movie really WAS completely different. So I guess the title isn't really too fraudulent after all! You just need to put it in the right context! And besides, the bottom of the DVD case clearly states, 'The BEST of Monty Python's Flying Circus®", which is as good a disclaimer as any (boy, I make a mighty effort to rationalize this whole thing, don't I?)!But even though the moniker may be misleading to some, I do find the movie to be a neat study of how a bigger budget can enhance the look and atmosphere of comedic sketches. You gotta admit, the Nudge Nudge© sketch looks a lot better performed in an actual pub/lounge. And they finally got a decent-looking parrot to play the title role in the You-Know-What sketch. Then there's the uncensored Enchanted Prince of The Wobbles© 'toonage that has him dying of cancer as originally envisioned by legendary 'toonster Terry Gilliam! And to top things off, you get the pleasure of viewing it all in widescreen, which is something the TV show never did! Neat, huh? Of course, if you're kinda squeamish about watchin' this in its original aspect ratio, all ya gotta do is flip the disc over and view it in Pan-'N'-Scan! But wait-- there's more! Unlike every other movie DVD I own, this platter doesn't include a trailer! So in that sense it really IS Completely Different! I know, I know-that last part was a pretty weak connection to the flick's title, but it was the best I could do. Besides, I don't see YOU comin' up with anything better anyway! Bottom Line: if you wanna see an MPFC® flick that's "Something Completely The Same, 'Cept Different", this presentation's worth at least a rental! 'Late

Summary: Beware - not original TV sketches
Review: Purchasers should be aware that this is a compilation of all the most famous sketches RE-INACTED and refilmed by the cast in a Movie format. It lacks the raw fresh energy in the TV versions. It's still very entertaining - but for the full MPFC punch skip this movie and spend the extra money for the original TV episodes.

Review: sorry, but the feeling of immediacy of the original TV sketches really is the key for me when it comes to this material - hearing the audience reaction (not canned laughter, thank God!) is an important part of the performance for me. I'll be the first to admit that, had I never seen the TV show, I'd probably be just fine with the film versions of these skits. For a Python "dabbler" (i.e. greatest-hits-buyers) this disc is just fine - but I'm going to invest in the entire collection of TV originals instead . . .

Review: This film is a lovely collection of Monty Python's favourite sketches,some new sketches,and some generalized re-workings of some other sketches.( At least that's what the package says,Guv.) Originally created as a showcase of their work,up to 1971,and to introduce them to American audiences,it goes beyond that. A lot of classic Python skits are included here,"The Lumberjack Song","The 127 Annual Upper Class Twit of the Year Show","The Dead Parrot Sketch","Defense Against Fresh Fruit","The World's Deadliest Joke","How Not To Be Seen",and "The Marriage Guidance Counciller",among others. ( Which is much more than you deserve! ) As an introduction to Python,this makes for a good starting place. For the Monty Python affectionato,this collection is great because it contains variations of classic sketches,including some alternate endings,and some "only seen here" stuff. And....nearly 98% of the material was all re-filmed for this collection,including Gilliam's wonderful animation! ( It's amazing what a few broken fingers can achieve,eh Mr.MacNaughton?) Whether you're an original fan or new to the scene,this video is a must for you!( Don't force us to come 'round to your house and MAKE you buy a copy,alright squire? Very good. )
