Rating: Summary: ..and then there came a Film. Review: First, for those twelve or so "critics" out of 131 who gave this anything but a five....your license for review has officially been revoked. It isn't even a question of criticism with this one; you WILL like it! Suffering through all the crap of the film industry for years was worth the wait if only for this film. The blend of fantasy/action/horror/time-piece is executed in absolute perfection. Shame on those who didn't see it in the big screen! I only hope you have a reliable set-up at home to enjoy this magnificent DVD.
Rating: Summary: the best french film Review: I spend a lot of time watching french films and I have to say that this is one of the best ones I have ever seen. It is a thriller, it is suspenseful, it is an action movie, and it is a romance. The plot is fantastic and the ending is incredible, not to mention the special effects.
Rating: Summary: Trans-Genre Entertainment Value Extraordinaire Review: Bro de le Loup has elements of horror, North American action, Hong Kong action, religious/political thriller, and mystery. All of these elements are blended in an almost seamless manner. I intitially forgot to mention the romance aspect because it is pleasantly subtle. The acting is quite well done. The wide array of main characters each utilize their relatively equal amounts of screen-time to expose the maximum level of depth possible. At the same time each character shows off their own style of charisma to maintain the high level of entertainment value in the movie. The action scenes are very enjoyable. The martial arts segments in the movie are high quality. This part of the action is blended into the storyline in a reasonable manner so as not to undermine the intricacies of the plot. More mainstream action is also very well-done. It blends into the movie but also takes the viewer by surprise. The movie is beautifully filmed. Some very clever shots are particularly surprising. The settings and costumes are interesting and believable. Overall the movie is much better than one might expect. It must be judged as a whole because it deleicately entwines so many fine elements including some interesting myth/history that is remiscent of...aww shoot I don't wanna give nuthin' away. Watch and enjoy!
Rating: Summary: tightest action flick of all time Review: It's true that you spend the first hour alternately confused by gorgeous cinematography (wild undiscovered frontier of Paris's outskirts?) and plot turns that seem to make no sense (kung fu Indians?). But the film's rockin' flow keeps you going, and as the action and scenery really start to smoke, you suddenly, shatteringly, realize that EVERYTHING MAKES PERFECT SENSE. Every oddity and gorgeous detail hangs together because a rather good screenwriter spent months, not minutes, making sure that they did. Often to the viewer's surprise! The best action movie of recent memory, at least for viewers with 3-digit IQ's who pay attention.
Rating: Summary: Mysterious and Adventuresome Review: Since the previews first started I wanted to see The Brotherhood of the Wolf. However, since I live in a very rural location I was afraid it would never come to my hometown. Well it did, but only for a few late-night showings, and I (needless to say) went to see it. This film surrounds the paradoxical times of 18th century France, when a very thin and fuzzy line separated Science from Mythology. A visiting naturalist confronts the myth of an ENORMOUS wolf-like monster terrorizing the French countryside. He and his Native American counter-part, question the likelihood that a wolf is entirely responsible for these deaths. The supernatural implications of these myths lead way to the mass destruction of an entire and innocent wolf population in France. The Naturalist attempts to capture this supposed monster, and eventually discovers the political motivations behind these myths. This film was very exciting, and the French language added heavily to the flow of the film, making it quite novel. The story was very empowering to many held Native American beliefs surrounding the nature and science. The cinematography was elegant (especially in the countryside settings), the story was mysterious, and the acting (for a French film) was pretty good. Although some of the choreography was a bit far fetched, especially within the limitations of a story that was so heavily reliant upon science, it did make it very fun (and sometimes terrifying) all at the same time. I enjoyed the film greatly, and plan on buying it. Directing * * * * * Acting * * * * Story * * * * * Action * * * * p.s. Now, more than a year later...almost at the end of Operation Iraqi Freedom...I still like the movie. However contrary to one reviewers opinion this movie does not change my opinion about the French, when it comes to politics. Who the hell are they to want to profit from a war they did not fight in. The Iraqi People are the only ones who will profit from this war, no thanks to the French. What can I say, their sense of Liberty died with the French Revolution. I mean what kind of crazy people would call Thomas Paine too blasé, and then threaten to chop his head off inspite of his patriotic and Liberty-driven help. But the Movie is still very entertaining.
Rating: Summary: The Brotherhood of the Wolf Review: Well what can you say about this film? I am not quite sure how to put it in to words but I think that the best way is to tell you a story of what this film meant to me. Unknown to many of my family and friends is that my father is unable to read. So not really knowing that this film was in English subtitiles I took my dad on our annual cinema night. As soon as the film started I felt a deep embarassment and stupidity that I even took him to see such a film. During the first 10 miniutes I asked him about 10 times if he wanted to go, but my dad being unselfish said no. This at the time broke my heart and sent a large lump to my throat. I sat there uneasy but as the cinema was empty I thought that providing some sort of commentary to what was going on would be the best thing to do. And too my surprise during the film he was totally engrossed by the richness and spell binding nature of this genre, and my talking did not spoil one moment.I think that is why I still struggle into putting it in to my own words why this film alllowed my father an illiterate too enjoy a subtitled film so much. I know its not a classic review of the film that I could posibley give but I feel this was the best way for me personally as a reviewer and son could give.
Rating: Summary: This is a great flick! Review: By now you know the story so I'll skip the overview. -possible problems I'm not one of those viewers that has an aversion to sub-titles which would otherwise be the only drawback of this movie. It is long, but that was fine with me. It was a fun ride. Can a rollercoaster be too long for a rollercoaster fan? -the review The action scenes are fulfilling, the costumes are thorough, story is fascinating and the ending is satisfying. The loose ends are tied up. There is a lot of "something" for everyone. -and a side note I dont have a large DVD collection but this one is on order. Check it out.
Rating: Summary: Quite a surprise (in a good way) Review: WOW! MAtrix-like scenes, stalking scenes featuring edge-of-your-seat horror, comedy...this movie has everything! You'll cheer for the heroes, and forget to breath everytime a horror element comes up. This director sure is stylish. He can shoot water, snow, rain...perfectly to fit the mood, and I am surprised if this movie doesn't win an academy award. It is SO much better than Crouching Tiger. THis actually has a good plot, great actors, and more than just funky kung-fo battles. Bravo, FrancE! I'm buying this movie on DVD!
Rating: Summary: My favorite movie of all time... Get it, watch it, love it. Review: Action, Customs, Romance, Kung Fu. This isn't for everyone but for those of you with an opened mind. You'll love it.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful Film Review: Well folks I must say that this is the best foreign film of all time. It for sure beats Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Amelie, and Iron Monkey. That is just a short list. This film is alive with cinemotography and the character development is astounding. The action sequences are very tense and very fun. Great film, if you havent seen it do yourself a favor and buy it. Dont rent it, buy it. Its that good.
