Summary: Not historically accurate, but a wonderful historical drama
Review: I loved this film for the great drama of a mere sixteen-year old being used for machinations of her family to ascend to the British throne. There is a scene where Lady Jane is punished (by spanking with a paddle or something) for disobedience; this is a harbinger of the ultimate tragedy for the hapless teenager. While the details of this historical drama are not precise, the tale is well-told and the costumes and scenery are magnificent. This is a good, riveting historical drama despite the liberties the screenwriters have taken.

Summary: A bookish teenage girl's dream
Review: I too was a teenager when I first saw this movie, at the time I was really starting to fall in love with the Renaissance. (I ultimately studied Renaissance lit in college, and maybe this movie had a little bit to do with that!) At my young age, I was of course drawn to the romantic part of the story--I was hopelessly enchanted with Cary Elwes, and I'm sure the blossoming romance between Guildford and Jane caused me a great many sighs. Okay, so it is a little fairy-taleish and not exactly true to history (I once read that it is uncertain whether or not their marriage was ever consummated) but it was awfully fun to watch. Now that I'm older, however, I've noticed some other things that interest me more than the love story, like the political machinations of Northumberland and Jane's parents, and the stark portrayal of the treatment of women in that time period. Jane was vitally important to the plans of her parents, and yet they beat her nearly senseless for refusing to marry Guildford Dudley. Helena Bonham Carter and Cary Elwes are very believable in their roles--Jane seems otherworldly and disconnected from her feelings due to her obsession with learning; Guildford is a handsome rake who does actually have deep thoughts and ideas about things, contrary to what Jane thinks at first. Both roles were excellently played.

Review: From the first time I saw this movie nearly ten years ago, I was hooked. To this day, I cannot watch it without crying! Despite the dramatic license, this is a remarkable story, with a remarkable young woman at it's core, just another in a line of increasingly more remarkable Tudor women. Check it out if you like the Tudor period - you won't be sorry!!

Summary: The Nine Days' Queen
Review: There must be some kind of requirement that you had to have fallen in love with this movie when you were a teenager, and I meet that requirement! I, too, saw this for the first time on TV and spent an entire summer obsessed with it, watching it over and over on the worn-out cassette I'd taped it on. I love the costumes, the sets, and the music; Helena Bonham Carter is wonderful and Cary Elwes is great! He's really an underappreciated actor, I think. I realize that parts of the story are inaccurate, but as a whole it is very entertaining and well done, and will give you a good idea of life in 16th-century England. I'm so glad this is finally on DVD!

Review: This movie is so heart breaking and is amazingly well done. I believe that Helena Bonham Carter made a PERFECT portrayal of Lady Jane Grey. Though her story is terribly heartbreaking, this movie definitly is a must see.

Review: After viewing the VHS I'm buying the the Wide Screen DVD version!
The music was very beautiful but I can't find the soundtrack anywhere? The costumes, acting, scenerey where all very believable and wonderful including on location real castles. It didn't bother me that the story wasn't highly accurate. There was enough accuracy to make history's major points. As we all know it's a Hollywood convention to change the real story to make it more entertaining. But mostly the movie grabbed my emotions like few other movies and made me think a little more how people can be so cruel all for the sake of power or greed or religion. One thing I would like to research is to see if the Duke of Northumberland had King Edward poisoned or did he die of natural causes and while the Duke seemed evil in the beginning, there did seem to be some validity to his motives in the end even though he didn't remain true to his cause.

Summary: Tudor England ... Not A Boring Era
Review: Helena Bonham Carter stars as the young girl who for nine days was Queen of England. Lady Jane Grey was Henry VIII's niece and a staunch Protestant. Through political machinations, the dying King Edward (a teenager) makes his cousin Jane his successor, not the legitimate choice, his very Catholic sister Mary. Jane is forced into an arranged marriage to facilitate the move and soon finds herself on a throne she never wanted. Her husband gives her much support, and the two decide to make changes that will benefit the long suffering common man. But Mary will not be denied her throne (and neither will her husband, the Spanish king). Queen Jane is removed and condemned to death, quite a common fate back then. The acting is tops, with Bonham Carter and Cary Elwes as her husband delivering excellent performances, surrounded by a cast of pros. The sets, costumes, and other period details are terrific as well. I wasn't expecting to see a romance film, which is what this movie develops into. It's not very accurate, although the actors have a great chemistry and make it work. I was expecting to see more of the political behind-the-scenes treachery, since the story of Lady Jane is rooted in religious conflict and personal ambition. The politics of Tudor England are fascinating, and this film certainly deals with the political and religious climate, but I would like to have seen more. Nonetheless, the film is well made and serves as a solid introduction to that critical time in English history.

Summary: Impressive - Most Impressive
Review: I remember being transfixed by this film on cable as a teenager and years later, this film absolutely holds up. Being a History minor, I've since read that the love story was a bit exaggerated, but what a story. Bonham-Carter and Elwes as the principals are at their brooding and brilliant best. This film is a great DVD transfer. I bought this film on VHS not too long ago thinking that it would be overlooked for DVD. It hasn't been and the transfer is simply beautiful. As a photographer I kept comparing this film with Cate Blanchet's 'Elizabeth' and thinking how drab it was in comparison - VHS comparison. This film on DVD rivals the beauty of 'Elizabeth' and will make an excellent addition to anyone's DVD library. This bitter sweet love story is well-acted, photographed and pure escapism in the grand tradition that is well worth owning.

Review: "Lady Jane" was a very beautiful movie but it was not accurate. The person who play Jane Grey seem too cold and even rude sometime but in reality Jane was a sweet girl, not cold and rude. Also Jane didn't love Guildford Dudley, they never had a love romance like in the movie at all. This movie is mostly base on the beautiful love story between Jane and Guildford but that love story never existe is not accurate.I think the one who play Queen Mary was good and seem to have more character then the one in the more modern movie "Elizabeth" with Cate Blanchett. Mary in the movie "Lady Jane" is not boring and plain like the one in the movie "Elizabeth".It's still is a beautiful and good movie. I love the atmosphere in this movie and the beautiful costumes. The main actors, the one who play Jane and Guildford give a good performance even if it's not accurate!
