Summary: Noble effort, ultimately a waste of time
Review: This movie has a nice premise, but the flashback narration idea is old and over-used. Rent it, but don't buy it.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Decadent and glossy!
Review: For those of you who criticize this movie for being little more than glitter and gloss, I'd have to somewhat agree. But I think that's what makes the film so great. It's filmed in a style that suits the subject matter. However I would like to think that it better represents "glam rock" than Bowie, whom I consider to transcend the limits of any genre. I liked how the film seemed to be neither an indictment nor an endorsement: there were incredible moments of brilliance to the movement as in Bowie's case as well as the hollowness of fame and decadence.

Summary: this movie rocks!
Review: This rockin portrayal of the glam 70's glows on the screen, from the soundtrack to the costumes, to the wacky plot this movie has it all! (and if you wanted to see ewan mc gregor naked, it's got that too!)

Summary: An addictive, heart-wrenching, fabulous glam fantasy.
Review: Many of this film's critics make the mistake of taking it too literally - though based on Bowie's life, it's not intended to be accurate or biographical. It is a glam fantasy, both beautiful and painful at the same time. The story is very complex, but every bit of it is worthwhile, so if you didn't "get it" the first time around, try watching it again! I have seen Velvet Goldmine many times, and every time there is something new that I notice, or something else to think about. Todd Haynes' script and direction and pure genius, and that's all there is to it!

I can not find fault with a single of the actors - each of the stars gives a incredible performance. Toni Collette, Christian Bale, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Ewan McGregor give depth and emotion to characters, so that even at their harshest or most brutal moments, one can't help but feel for them. Micko Westmoreland (aka The Bowling Green) is a standout as Jack Fairy, who is glamour personified. There is wonderful chemistry between the male leads, who truly bring to life the movie's gay romance. Their on-screen kiss is more passionate and beautiful than any I have ever seen on film, gay or straight.

But before you start taking the movie too seriously, it's also great fun! You can analyze it, which is worthwile, or you can pop it in for a night of fluff and glamour. Everything is visually exciting... feathers, sequins, spaceships, and glitter everwhere. Not to mention the music! Perhaps the most valuable thing I gained from this movie was an introduction to a genre of music I knew nothing about. How did I survive for so long without Roxy Music?

I HIGHLY recommend this movie!

"Once upon a time, not so long ago, the children of the revolution looked up into the sky. And there, hovering amid a boulevard of stars, was a vision of the future as strange and dazzling as any dream. What they saw that night no one can ever say. But what they heard can still be heard today."

Summary: BOWIE IS THE ORIGINAL
Review: Well.......Even though I gave this movie five stars, I must say that I like Bowie a lot more then I like "Brian Slade" (but it's really not hard to do because I absolutely LOVE Bowie and everything about him!) Anyway, Rhys Meyers is perfect for the roll and so is McGregor(Curt Wilde), they make the perfect combination! The best part in the movie is the kissing scene(fantastic!)followed by Brian Slade singing "Baby's on fire" and licking Wilde's guitar!! Makes me want to go straight back to the seventies!!! Well well....I had loved to see Bowie in the roll of "himself"!! But it's a beautiful film, it is. Very very good!! *Ziggy Stardust*

Summary: Visually superb, but lacking in content
Review: I saw this film twice just to be sure of it all. It's very difficult to take in all at once: the music, the visual style, the story. I loved the music, so much so that I went out and started buying glam rock records the day after I watched the film. The costumes were incredible, but the story lacked a little something, such as coherence (what was up with the Oscar Wilde/spaceship thing? Did anybody get that?). I think that the director spent too much time on making it visually outrageous and not enough time on developing the characters completely (although I did love the cast!). Still, though, a great film to see at least once.

Summary: A Feast for the Eyes, Ears, and Mind
Review: This movie combines stunning costumes, great music, and a fantastic story to keep viewers glued to the screen. The casting was great, particularly in the cases of Ewan McGregor, Eddie Izzard, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. McGregor displays an energy not seen since Johnny Depp's performance in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. This is truly one of the greatest films of 1998.

Summary: Eye candy, ear candy, mind candy
Review: Beautiful and appealing on all levels. Ewan McGregor as Curt Wild on stage is brilliant and breathtaking. A very beautiful screen kiss between Brian and Curt ("The world is changed because you are made of ivory and gold. The curves of your lips rewrite history."). Innovative and intelligent screenplay, though perhaps just a bit too self-consciously so. All in all, a brilliant piece of work. You either love it or you hate it.

Summary: Movie with many layers and awesome soundtrack
Review: I totally enjoyed watching this movie. I enjoyed the acting, the costumes, and very definitely the music. There are so many layers to this movie and it was very thought provoking. It's not just about the glitter scene. It's about the need for love and for adulation, how empty fame can be, what someone will do for the fame and the adoration, bisexuality, adolescent angst, codependency, and so much more. There is so much pain mixed in the glitter; Brian, Curt, Mandy, and Jack are all such anguished souls. All the actors do wonderful job of portraying this. You have to watch the movie several times to catch all the layers. Each time you see something more, something different. The soundtrack to this movie is not my usual type of music at all. Since I've gotten it though, I've listened to it. Obsessively. It's wonderful, especially "Hot One" by Shudder to Think. This movie will definitely be added to my collection.

Summary: Good casting and wardrobe.....that's it!!!
Review: I had such high hopes for this movie! Glam Rock! Bowie! Iggy! But, all I got was a attempt at Citizen Kane that went absolutely nowhere! With all the glowing reviews on this page I can't help but wonder if they saw the same movie. Even Bowie himself panned the film in a recent Spin article. Oh well, I guess I just not hip enough to get it.
