Summary: Beautifully subtle and moving
Review: This film is truly a piece of artistry. Roger Michell's camera work is unbelievable. His scenes are so carefully composed and arranged and yet seem so natural and true to life. The entire film seems to have been lit by nature and candlelight, which makes the film so very real. The women in the film wear no makeup, and things are allowed to look dirty and unkempt where appropriate. Some other Austen adaptations (especially Emma) tend to make the period seem too bright, too beautiful, too perfect. The acting in this film is outstanding. Amanda Root is perfect portraying Anne Elliot as a faded bloom come to life again, and Ciaran Hinds is amazing as we watch his confident and carefree Captain Wentworth lose some of his self-possession. He is my favorite Austen hero and any woman who sees this film will understand! The supporting cast is equally superb; the Admiral and Mrs. Croft and Anne's sister Mary are particularly delightful. The original music score is beautifully evocative and simple; it conveys just the right amount of emotion, never becoming grandiose or syrupy. Do pay close attention when watching this film. It's quite easy to miss some of the more subtle moments, and these are truly the most beautiful. The film is jam-packed with these subtleties, and every time I think of some of these momentary glances and slight gestures I am filled with goosebumps and an involuntary sigh of romantic longing escapes my lips... I realize I'm getting carried away. See the film and if you have any romantic sensibilities at all you'll understand!

Summary: My favorite Jane Austen adaptation...
Review: based on my favorite Jane Austen book.The cinematography is incredible, the costumes are great, the scenery is lovely. Root and Hinds are perfectly cast; the scene where they see each other for the first time in 8 years takes my breath away. Their eyes are incredibly expressive, and the way the camera lingers on Anne's hand as she grips the chair never fails to move me. As for The Letter, need I say more???

Summary: Sweetest love story ever!
Review: I had been a Jane Austen movie fan (Emma and Sense& Seneibility) but not entirely sure I would like Persuasion. It was supposed to be about a girl who couldn't stand up to her family and refusing the guy she loved. I am a very head strong person and did not like the idea of such a weak character. I changed my mind soon. The scenery was beatiful and Anne I was soon liking a lot. Charles was one of my favorite characters with his hunting. The love letter was the best I have ever heard and when they finally get together in the end. Beautiful! It's worth your money.

Summary: I am intoxicated by this movie.
Review: I am no great Austen fan, but my breath catches when I see Wentworth and Anne together. I generally despise Old English or Irish period pieces (I must have had a past life there that was painful), but I am truly transfixed by this video. I am not a fan of Hugh Grant, but the romantic element of Sense and Sensibility so appealed to me that I sought out other Austen videos - and I am touched to the core by the romance of Anne and Captain Wentworth. Sigh. Yes, I admit that I too wondered about the casting of Root ("will she ever SAY anything?!") but she is wonderful. And another sigh for Hinds.....he is as desperately in love as any woman could hope.

Summary: Very much a movie of manners
Review: Very Regency - very Austen but oh, does it grow on you. I am delighted with it each time that I see it - Ann's father's sneers have to be the best that ever made it onto film! Yes, it is slow. Yes, you have to pay attention to it. The charm is in the details of the expressions and tones of voices. Still - I had 10 convicted male felons watch it without moving from their seats until the the very end last Tuesday - and it generated a very lively discussion on propriety, the British Navy and how women's lives have changed. That isn't something too many movies do!

Review: The lead actress may not be beautiful but the passion she portrays shows you just how beautiful Anne is inside as well as out. This video "pierces the soul" of the romantic.

Review: I love to read Jane Austin books and watch movies based upon her novels. I found this adaptation of Persuasion to be extremely tedious. The acting and the directing was extremely poor.

Summary: Starts slow, then grows on you
Review: I watched this movie before I read Jane Austen's "Persuasion". When I first watched it, it seemed extremely slow -- nothing was happening! Towards the ending things got better, but I wasn't that impressed. Then I bought the book and read it. From a strict movie entertainment level from the first viewing, I would give this film 3 stars. However, from its capturing of the essense of the book, it deserves 5 stars. Upon first watching it, I was confused by Amanda Root, who isn't that attractive but gets the handsome Captain Wentworth at the end. However, I see that this reflects the book, where Anne has lost her bloom and is thus not as beautiful as she once was, but the strength of character and true love between the two wins out. The other reviewers here were right -- this movie gets better and better upon watching it multiple times. It's a very quiet movie in a way, but full of gentle nuances that are really quite powerful once you get into that mindset.

Review: Jane Austen put her heart and soul on the book and the movie was excellent. I bet even Mrs. Austen her self would see it . The performance was beautifully told Thats why I want my own copy . You have to see it and you won't regret it.

Review: Upon first watching this Austen adaptation, I was disappointed with the lack of interaction between the two main characters. However, when watching a second time, I appreciated more the subtleties. Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds (especially Hinds) were perfectly cast, and the movie definitely deserves more than one look. Though it starts slow, it is worth it to stick with it until the end. As another reviewer said, it is better each time around. For the reviewer from Denver who is interested in other Ciaran Hinds' works, may I suggest A&E's Jane Eyre. He is more than outstanding!!
