Summary: Loved It
Review: This is an excellent version of Jane Eyre, keep in mind it is a movie and not a book. Samantha Morton does a good job as the poor teacher, and I thought that Ciaran Hinds did a wonderful Job as the tormented Rochester, and for others who wrote reviews, you would think that the disturbing (if at all disturbing)aspects of the movie fits the spirit of the excellent book. If you catch it on TV you do not get the full effect because they do cut scenes out, so you need to buy this DVD and enjoy! It's wonderful!

Summary: Great Jane...Terrible Rochester
Review: As a Jane Eyre fan, I've seen most of the film versions of the classic novel. No single film fully meets my expectations, but this is, I think, the best appearance of a Jane I have seen. This Jane Eyre (portrayed by Samantha Morton) is strong, yet not overbearing; she has humor, yet is serious, too. She even looks right for the role. Ms. Morton knows her character and gives us a richly layered and detailed Jane Eyre.

Sadly, other aspects of this film are less gratifying. In particular, the actor portraying Mr. Rochester gives one of the worst performances of a Rochester I have ever seen. He's so hotheaded and violent it's difficult to see what positive traits Jane sees in him. This is no sardonic hero.

Still, if you want to enjoy a great performance by Samantha Morton as Jane Eyre, this film is worth watching.

Summary: What a waste!
Review: If you loved the book, you'll hate this adaptation of the story. This particular version of Jane Eyre is one of the worst I've seen. It was a huge disappointment. Don't waste your money on this one, instead, go for the BBC VHS version with Timothy Dalton and Zella Clark, which is the most faithful adaptation of the book I've seen, and I've seen most of the movies made.

Summary: Great Movie, Bad Picture Quality
Review: I wish someone could comment on the picture quality of the DVD. I have purchased about 20 DVD movies and rented countless more, and I thought all of them looked just fine. This is the first one I have come across whose picture resolution/sharpness resembles that of a slightly worn-out VHS tape.

As for the movie, Samantha Morton was a wonderful Jane Eyre and Ciaran Hinds was a pretty good Mr. Rochester. Knowing what I know now about the DVD, I might still have bought it because I love this version of Jane Eyre and don't have it on videotape.

Summary: Jane Who?
Review: The screenwriting for this particular adaptation took extreme liberties, not with the events (which is to be expected) but the characterization of both Jane and Mr. Rochester. I assume the liberties were taken in order to make the characters more palatable to modern tastes and philosophies. A pity the writer could not trust the original material to convey the story.

Summary: Intense and Truthful
Review: I love this version of "Jane Eyre". The script was intelligently written. It remained faithful to the central issue of the novel: how Jane Eyre's unique caracter and personality ensure her a sincere and passionate love. That is why the oblivion of other story lines, such us those of her sufferings at her aunts house and the discovery of her cousings, is not at all cuestionable. Their non-appearance concentrate the love story, which, without a doubt, is the main interest of the writer and the director. Even the dialogue, most of which does not proceed from the novel, has been created to enhance the sensually intense feelings that Jane Eyre and Edward Rochester have for each other.
I consider this film an excellent adaptation, hence it captures the spirit of the novel even when it does not depict all of it's actions or gather most of it's dialogue from the text.

Summary: LOVED it!
Review: I read Jane Eyre in high school and again recently, and out of curiosity wanted to see a film adaptation. I did a lot of research in finding the "right" film to see, and though this is the only one I HAVE seen, I thoroughly enjoyed it. As all adaptations to film must leave out certain details for time purposes, I felt that this particular "book to movie" was done wonderfully. I would highly recommend watching this movie to get a close to accurate storyline of the novel. The actors/actresses were great and I absolutely enjoyed it!

Summary: An amazing edition of a classic
Review: Heart-wrenching and heart felt! A wonderful way to expose someone to the classics -- after seeing this, you want to read the book. Ciaran Hinds was awesome -- I love his portrayal of Mr. Rochester, especially the emotion line towards the end of the movie -- "Jane, my heart will burst for want to see your face." Beautiful!

Summary: Jane Eyre
Review: After a rough childhood Jane Eyre wanted a change of scenery. So with much determination that she had. She became a governess to The Master of Thornfield, Mr. Rochester's daughter. She soon falls in love for her Employer. Still her feeling grew on for him by each time they talked. Her heart finally became opened to his kindness. Jane won Mr. Rochester's heart, than when the past finds him out, he has to deal with them. Jane was tourn from the deepest love she could ever have, and went away until Mr. Rochester dealt with his problems. Leaving was the hardest thing she could do to him. A Great DVD to have in anyone collections.

Summary: The Perfect Mr. Rochester!!!
Review: I saw the film on A&E, and was simply blown away by Ciaran Hinds' truly outstanding performance as Mr. Rochester. In fact, I'd say out of all of the previous incarnations of the brooding master of Thornfield I have ever seen, Hinds is the most true to Charlotte Bronte's vivid description--the force and spirit is all there in Hinds' dark eyes--as is his intelligence, wit, and passion.Samantha Morton portrays a somewhat subdued, rather softer version of Jane, but still very much on the mark--moreso than her predecessors in the role. The film's only major flaw has nothing to do with the cast--it's the fact that in paring down Bronte's excellent novel to fit a 2 hour time frame much was left out, making this adaptation feel somewhat rushed and choppy at times. All in all, I really LOVED this version of my favorite book of all time!!! It is definitely not, by any means, the most faithful rendition of Bronte's classic novel--but, in my book, it is by far the most passionate.
