Summary: Babette's Feast
Review: This movie is a wonderful example of unselfish love which is not recognized by the pious ones who should be practicing what they preach.

Summary: Sublime
Review: This is a fascinating film. I'm appreciative of a large breadth of movies, but consider myself more of the <action/adventure> type rather that the <art film> type. The first time I watched it, I felt that it started out so slow, why am I still watching? And yet it was easy to keep watching. It's a movie that I have watched probably 50 times over the last 3 years, and still enjoy immensely.

The original actor's voices are so rich, the subtitled version is the only way to go. The dubbed version I saw on television a short while ago was abysmal by comparison.

Summary: A gentle story of generosity, humour and love.
Review: This wonderful film, based on a short story by Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen), tells the story of what happens when a French refugee turns up at the house of the daughters of a (now deceased) protestant parson in Denmark, and asks to be taken on as their cook and housekeeper. She brightens their life, and when, on the occasion of what would have been the 100th birthday of the parson, she unexpectedly wins the French lottery she decides to cook them a feast like they have never had before. But how will the protestant sisters and their friends react to this extravagance? This is not a film full of action, but of subtle humour and heavily masked deep emotion. The feature film format gives the short story space to breathe and the atmosphere to develop. It won the Oscar for best Foreign film. The copy I have (and I assume this is the same) is in Danish with English Subtitles.

Which makes me wonder why the illiterate "Jillian from NY", who reviewed this wonderful film in November saw it in FRENCH class. I know people who have not found this film appealing, either because they have an aversion to exotic food, or they only enjoy action thrillers, but to claim "babbette was portrayed as someone who when she won the lottery was exploted (sic) for her francs" seems absurd given that she was the only one who knew what she was spending!

Summary: Special Story
Review: I stumbled upon this movie on cable one night when I had insomnia and I've been hooked since. I've recommended it to all the special people in my life. Sometimes I watch the movie whenever I feel like "something is missing" and that empty feeling immediately goes away. If you are at all a spiritual type of person, don't miss this!

Summary: A DRAG!
Review: I watched this movie in eigth grade french. Let me tell you i really didn't like it. I understand everything about it but come babbette makes some nasty stuff! I also think that babbette was portrayed as someone who when she won the lottery was exploted for her francs.

Summary: There is one line from this film meant for all artists
Review: This film is an absolute masterpiece, with subtle grace and compelling characters. The sweet surprises in this film are like finding easter eggs in uncommon locations. There is one simple line of dialogue in here that every artists' heart will leap at and embrace. I won't tell you what it is, but I'll bet you'll recognize it when you hear it.

Summary: My Favorite Film of all Time
Review: What can you say about a film that represents the human heart so deeply? It reminds us how the purest principles of trust, generosity, kindness, tolerence, humanity, spirituality, friendship, and honor cross all boundries of time, language, and religious barriers. An absolutely beautiful, inspiring film to watch. I recommend this glorious life lesson to all.

Summary: no other work of art compares
Review: The view of life through an true artist's eye, all-embracing and humble. Everyone can be an artist ("allow me to do all that I am capable of doing"). It shows the complete and simple wholeness (beyond happiness), and how utterly we are MEANT to have it, THROUGH A DINNER! (in very special circumstances, of course). No "artifice", this movie. Can't get it off of my mind as a reference to my life, and never fully satisfied when a work of art lacks something of what I found there.

Summary: creativity and redemption, bliss and righteousness kiss
Review: I have watched this movie at least 6 times. I'm buying it because I want to see it again and again. I could say it's about what it means to be an artist. or what it means to make choices. or about a couple of old maids or about making a nifty meal for folks. This is a movie that isn't about. It is. It feeds the eyes, ears, mind and soul. a treasure.

Summary: Subtly humorous, wonderfully rich
Review: A favorite film, this movie is not easy to describe because it doesn't fit in any "category." The quiet humor and compassionate humanity expressed was a joy to watch. There is profundity in the simplicity of the story about the choices we make and the triumph of artistic expression. Also, the dinner scene is beautful and funny, and leaves me ravenous!
