Rating: Summary: Truly sublime. Review: Artistic, engaging and moving...just an exceptional piece of work.
Rating: Summary: Zany, original, fantastic animation, but lacking in story Review: Absolutely one of the most most wonderfully drawn animated films with zany characters and truly original ideas in addition to a fantastic musical score, but..and it's a big but, no one goes anywhere in this movie. Every character remains exactly the same. The tough old granny remains a tough old granny (now with 3 eccentric biddies to keep her company), the dog is still fat and faithful, and the nephew or grandson remains a depressed bicycling zombie - you wonder why she went through the trouble to save him.
Rating: Summary: Most People Won't Agree But..... Review: Firstly let me say the animation was great. It used digital in an innovative way with the animation that made it seamless, the designs were as original and inspired as classic Disney AND the opening 5 minutes were brilliant. THAT SAID, the plot, what little there was of it, was awful. I basically hated everything about this film. It's very obvious (America: land of hamburger eating fat people) etc etc. I think people dig this film for the same reason they dig the equally as dull LOST IN TRANSLATION, it's slow and boring and people used to brainless American films feel superior watching an "art film". But to be naive enough to compare this to "Amelie" is downright offensive. The only thing I can compare it to is certain Ralph Bakshi films with his over the top caricatures and GROSS OUT humour, which this film had it's ample share (the interminable and unfunny Frog Eating). It dragged on and on and the last line of the film "is that it?" and "For my parents" pretty much sums it up. I pity his parents.
Rating: Summary: the greatest movie Review: After watching this movie with my little brother, big sister, and Dad, I knew that this was my new favorite movie. It included sizzling songs, and although a little nudity was in it,(even in cartoons), my little brother, who's 10, enjoyed it equally as I did. without words, some of the parts were a bit confusing, especially with the french, but in the end it was all worth it. I highly suggest that, no matter what type of movies you like, you go check this one out.
Rating: Summary: Stunning and Amazing, takes you back to childhood Review: Any one who is in the art field, especially digital art NEEDS to see this movie, and anyone who likes cartoons and a fun time NEEDS to see this movie. This is perhaps a landmark in the animation film business, it is the absolute model for blending the new with the old, although the film is completely done digitally (both 2d and 3d) you would never know, everything looks hand painted and hand drawn. They characters are lovable, and unique, different in their own way. The motion is clean and flowing, beautifully done. I am not going to tell you the plot because I am sure everyone else has, but it is a fun and simple plot that takes us from France all the way to Belleville which is an obvious slam at America, but don't take that offensively, the world would be a better place if we all would lighten up and take a good light hearted joke. I found it all amusing, entertaining, halarious, as well as incredible period music that ties in the whole theme. ABSOLUTELY, one of the best movies this year.
Rating: Summary: Odd but Entertaining Review: It isn't just that the small amount of dialogue included in this quirky little animated feature is in a different language; the whole nature of the film, the mannerisms, the humor and the artistic intent are in a radically different tongue as well. The Triplets of Belleville is an interesting, somewhat funny, and visually amazing film that is a welcome break from the ordinary. While American animated films of late have concentrated on the well worn clichés of silly songs and cutely drawn adolescents, Triplets offers a radically alien view. The art is wildly different, assaulting American views of animation and how it should be used. While the actual script is somewhat lacking and the jokes are sometimes off, the movie should be seen just for the eye candy alone. Triplets centers around that most continental of sports, competitive bike racing. We are introduced to the racer as a young man, a pudgy little fellow with a hyperactive dog and a doting grandmother. By the time he is older, the boy has become a champion racer, making him famous for all the wrong reasons. Even though his grandmother keeps a watchful eye on him, the racer is captured by shadowy criminal elements, who seek to use him in a devious gambling scheme. Undaunted, his faithful grandmother goes off across the ocean on a desperate rescue attempt. In the strange new land she is met by the really strange Triplets, a former lounge act that has seen better days. Together, the elderly Frenchwomen represent a formidable rescue squad. The most striking aspect of the movie is the eclectic style. It is eye opening and astonishing, the hybrid of 1920's silent kitsch along with cutting edge animation art. It's a whole new style, one I've never seen before, and it really is something to experience. The creators of the movie have creatively dreamed up a whole new world, one with conflicting images and shades of artistic influences varied in their utility. The story is a bit long, but it provides some good laughs and some very catchy tunes that, for better or for worse, stick with you. An interesting experience, to say the least.
Rating: Summary: INTERESTING - BUT DON'T TAKE YOUNGER CHILDREN Review: This is a PG-13 animated cartoon film that will stretch your imagination and sense of culture and will even midly humor you, but it is NOT appropriate for younger children. There is no talking and the story-line is adult-oriented. I think children under 14 will be bored to tears - they will not understand it at all. Take a date or adult friend, but leave your kids at home.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Review: This film is delightful, amazing, perfect, funny, sad, and brilliant. I could fill pages with adjectives. As animation it is more wonderful than most Disneyfied Americans have ever seen. I'm sure most customers are too young to remember these, but the black and white animated shorts of the 30s are fondly remembered in Triplets, especially their surrealistic elements--and after all, that's what's wonderful about animation--if you're going to stick strictly with the possible or the credible, why animate it? Disney and anime look sadder than sad next to the brilliance of this, and even Pixar, with all their inventiveness, does not even come close. Go see Triplets, and in May, buy it. You'll never see anything better until Michel Robin makes another.
Rating: Summary: A Beautiful Non-Disney Review: If you are tired of the Disney animations that all look the same, be sure to see the "Triplets of Belleville." It's an example of a movie that has created a new kind of animation that soars above any other I've ever seen. The animation is detailed from the mother's two uneven feet to the dog barking at the train out the window. It's full of laughs but also shows the dark part of life through symbols and irony. I highly reccommend.
Rating: Summary: No Disney Review: The Triplets of Belleville is in animation group of its own. Not a Disney or an anime...it was great. Though no one speaks the whole movie, you would never realize it, as the animation is so detailed. The story relates to what is happening today with America. Make sure you don't miss this!
