Summary: The best of the "Python" movies
Review: "Holy Grail" is, without question, the best of the movies made by the "Monty Python's Flying Circus" crew (the others being "Life of Brian", "Meaning of Life" and the greatest-hits "And Now For Something Completely Different). Where "Brian" relies for some of its humour on direct parodies of Biblical stories and then-topical references, "Meaning of Life" tends to get bogged down and "Completely Different" is nothing new, "Grail" is consistently creative and direct in its humour.

The plot, inasmuch as the Python crew ever bother with it, deals with King Arthur's quest to find the Holy Grail. The stories of the Round Table are quite a national treasure for the English, thus the decision to send them up was quite a brave one by the Pythons.

As with any comedy film, there are some wonderful set-pieces which have little or nothing to do with the plot. The two stand-outs here are the "ducking stool" scene, featuring Connie Booth as an alleged witch, and the "wedding" scene, hijacked by Sir Lancelot in exceedingly violent style. The ducking stool scene features one of the "cult lines" from the film, John Cleese's evidence for the woman being a witch: "She turned me into a newt...I got better".

And so it goes. King Arthur collects his motley collection of knights, including Sir Lancelot the Brave; Sir Robin the Not Quite As Brave As Sir Lancelot and Sir Not Appearing In This Film, and sets out to seek the Grail. This quest is played out against the backdrop of the Black Plague (used by some as a means of unloading troublesome relatives) and growing political unrest among the peasants (an astounding dialogue in the opening moments of the film features King Arthur and a peasant debating the merits of collective farming).

Along the way, the knights (whose "horses" are merely their squires banging coconut shells together) come upon a castle with a French garrison - nobody, not even the French, have any idea why - who insult them from a distance and throw large cows at them. This scene is conducted in typical Python fashion, establishing a series of illogical propositions as logical and then acting upon them. The "Wooden Rabbit" has to be seen to be believed.

Of course, the most famous scenes (other than the "French Taunter") are the Black Knight and the Knights of Ni. The Black Knight (Cleese again) engages in one of the worst-choreographed fight scenes ever committed to film and ends up losing his limbs - all four of them. For some reason, he continues to live and is very put out when King Arthur claims victory. The line "only a flesh wound" has taken on a life of its own following this scene.

It is the Knights of Ni, perhaps, who are the most enduring characters of "Holy Grail". They demand that Arthur and Sir Bedivere give them a shrubbery and later make the immortal demand that they "cut down the mightiest tree in the forest wiiiiiiiiiiiith....a HERRING". By this point, the plot has gone completely out of the window, as various knights appear and disappear only to kill "famous historians".

The other insane scenes feature Tim The Enchanter and the Holy Hand Grenade ("and thou shalt count three. Three shall be the counting and the number of the counting shall be three. Thou shalt not count four. Nor shalt thou count two, unless thou movest immediately on to three. Five is RIGHT OUT."). Even explaining how the party arrives here is futile. As a final note, fans of Sierra's "Quest for Glory" computer game series will note a resemblance between the questions at the Bridge of Doom and the gargoyle's questions in QFG1.

The ending, featuring police and television crews, is exactly what Monty Python was all about, nothing making sense.

Even the opening credits, featuring interesting translations of Olde Englishe and the production work of a series of wild animals and their trainers, are meticulously arranged for maximum laughs.

This film is more than essential. It is impossible to claim an understanding of British comedy without having seen "Holy Grail" at least once.

Summary: classic comedy!
Review: This is in my opinion the best example of fantastic comedy!
If you love this movie you should check out the other monty python movies, Life of Brian,The Meaning of life, and And Now For Something Completly Differant!(The Meaning of Life and Life of Brian are rated R and contain material that some people would find offensive)All four of the movies tie at number 1 on my comedy favorites list!
The Holy Grail is an absolutly hilarious tale of king Arther's quest to obtain the Holy Grail! And just when you think this dvd can't get any better you view the ridiculous amount of extra features! My favorites would be the short film about how to use your coconuts and the knights of the round table segment recreated in stop motion lego animation! All in all if you love this movie, buying the dvd is a no brainer!

Summary: Buy this or you will be taunted a second time!
Review: If you're a big fan of Monty Python, then you're already familiar with their style of humor. If not, this is a perfect place to get acquainted with the boys, as I know many people who know little about MP except for this film, and they all love it!

Monty Python's Flying Circus, which aired on British television from 1969-1973, is an original, funny, TV experience. The latitude that the group was given in terms of creativity is amazing. However, if one digs deeper, he/she learns that sometimes the BBC put the kibosh on some of the gags. In short, the Flying Circus shows were a testimony to the comic brilliance of John Cleese, Michael Palin, Terry Jones, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, and my personal favorite, the now deceased Graham Chapman. The other Python films are all great as well, including The Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life. But in the end, I think we all keep coming back to this film as the first and funniest of the Python movies.

I'll not try to navigate through the "plot" as it would be futile. Instead, I'd like to show what an excellent DVD this is. Not only do we have the film in widescreen (that's a must---don't even try to get me to watch a film in "pan and scan"!) but there's also some great extras including a 45 minute documentary where Michael Palin and Terry Jones revisit the old locations in Scotland where the film was shot. Who knew that the vast majority of the movie was shot in one old castle built in the early 14th century? Not me. There's also a neat little 17 minute BBC production called "Film Night" that shows on location interviews with all of the Pythons. You can also sing-along to all of the musical numbers and there's a Lego version of the "Nights of Camelot" sequence (It is a silly place).

There are a lot of other extras that I'll let you find out about for yourself. Above all, this is the kind of DVD that serious film fanatics and collectors drool over. One that has a great movie in widescreen and a lot of great extras.

Summary: Glad it's on DVD finally.
Review: If you've been waiting for this movie on dvd, get it. The extras are no big deal, honestly. The movie quality looks good though. I'm glad I bought it.

Summary: MONTY PYTHON IS VERY GOOD BUT NOT BEST
Review: This is a funny and bloody movie. I say bloody because there is a knight that gets his limbs cut of, a rabbit that jumps up and can bit your head off, and a person that collects dead bodies. But still it's funny. It starts when they have subtitles at the bottom of the opening credits, to the war at the end and the police pushes the camera off and the movies over. It is one of those rare movies that have to do with the making of the movie(like the end of Blazing Saddles.) I say it's not the best because The Meaning of Life is better. The Meaning of Life is longer and funnier. And Now For Something Completely Different is not as funny as this movie but is funny. I'm saying "funny" to much so if I mean funny I'll say banana. There is The Legendary Black Beast of Arrrghhh! and the way it dies is the animator has a fatal heart attack. It's a great movie and is very banana!

Summary: Help! Help! I'm being repressed!
Review: Monty Python at its finest! The anniversary edition is more than worth the price ... the special features are especially fun! I think my favorite is the "Subtitles for people who do not like the film, taken from Henry IV Part II by William Shakespeare."

Of course the Killer Rabbit accountant feature is also funny - if you've ever wanted to make a movie but you don't have the cash, you must needs watch this!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A minor but Monty Pythonish flaw
Review: The subtitles have a life of their own. On and off willy nilly. There doesn't seem much one can do about it except show the subtitles and tape a piece of newsprint over the lower part of the screen. Otherwise a great film.

Summary: The Pythons' sense of humor.....near impossible to desribe!
Review: There are people (such as my mom) who aren't impressed by this movie (or any other Python stuff) because they just don't get it. Then they go and try to make us look ridiculous because we find it so funny.

Well excuse us for not having a typical, American sense of humor - a movie doesn't have to have raunchy penis jokes or ridiculous one-liner 'punches' to be humorous! Granted, the movie does exihibit plenty of idiocy in itself, it is a different kind of idiocy. The Pythons' lunatic-like randomisity is what endears the fans.

This kind of humor is what my mom calls "dry humor". Well it is, for those of you out there who are too lazy to THINK. Comedy requiring thought - what a CONCEPT, huh?

Adam Sandler, Eddie Murphy, and all those others - mere cannon fodder to the Pythons! I'm not saying they aren't funny, mind you! I think Eddie Murphy is definitely hilarious! And Adam Sandler is..... .... well, his supporting cast does a better job than he does. If it wasn't for them, he wouldn't be quite as funny in movies (his CDs are a great though!).

My point is that they can't match up to the Pythons' thought patterns. They made comedy by touching nerves - sensitive areas that you find appalling at first, then somehow, you find them funny. Remember Life of Brian and Meaning of Life? Those were railed upon by being insensitive and overly nasty to the christian community. That's the humor in it! They make fun of true-to-life events!

The only thing that gave this movie four stars from me was the little problem with the subtitles. It could have been betterly handled.
