Summary: It was ok
Review: From the other reviews that I have been reading, I disagre. Sure, I admit the movie had a good plot and good characters, but Lazenbe was definatly the wrong choice. If they had chosen someone else, anyone else, this Bond film would have been consitered a great Bond as Dr. No, or Gold Finger. Good ol' George was so bad, and unbilevible as Bond, they would not let him to do another one.(A disision in which I agree!!) The producers also made a bad choice with Timithy Dalton, but that is another review.

THE BEST BOND ACTION
THE BEST BOND (GEORGE LAZENBY)
THE BEST BOND GIRL (DIANA RIGG)

THE BEST BOND DIRECTOR (PETER HUNT)

Summary: THE best Bond flick!
Review: Best Bond leading girl (Diana Rigg); Best Bond Villain (Telly Salvales as Blofeld); Best Bond cars; Best Bond women (at the ski resort, including a pre-Space 1999 Maya); Best Bond locales (Portugal and Switzerland); Best Bond chase sequences (through the snow); the longest Bond movie (2hrs.22mins.); and the Best Bond action and entertainment in one flick. So what if George Lazenby isn't the best Bond, the above mentioned reasons speak for themselves. No other Bond movie does it better.

Summary: An always underestimated Bond film!
Review: With the departure of Sean Connery as James Bond, the
producer found an interesting replacement for him:
Australian model George Lazenby snuck into the
office of Harry Saltzman, to apply for the part
James Bond. And after a while he got it!
To understand that this film received 5 stars and
still is not as good as Goldfinger, is not easy to explain.
First George Lazenby, who tried as hard as he could,
wasn't bad as James Bond, in fact director Peter Hunt
earns most of the thanks for that. As a matter a fact
this time the director is really the star of the picture.
In addition, the cast and crew surrounding Lazenby was
just unique. First of all, the spendid Diana Rigg who brought
the Tracy character to life, second, Telly (later Kojak) Savalas
as the evil main villain Ernest Stavro Blofeld, the best Blofeld
ever. Third the crew, the cinematography of Michael Reed and
the stunning ski chase sequences from top-notch Ski pro, Willy
Bogner (he returned for 3 more Bond films). Supplemental the
aerial photography from Johnny Jordan (he lost a leg during
filming "You only live twice" the prior Bond).
Fourth the editing by John Glen (who later would direct five
blockbuster Bond films) and of course fifth, the score by
John Barry, actually equal with the Goldfinger score.
And last but not least sixth, the amazing twist in a Bond
film, Bond fells in love and marries!! Only low point for
any Bondfan, the very sad ending...
Otherwise due to cast and crew (who really gave their best
of the best) a highly entertaining, action packed and exciting motion picture...
Outstanding and "different" 007 picture!

Summary: Not quite as good as the other Bond movies to me
Review: This Bond wasn't quite as good as the other Bond Movies, although it was still pretty good. I think if I hadn't seen a lot of Bond movies before I watched this on the opinion would be different.

Lazenby just doesn't do anything for me as Bond. He has the classic good looks of any Bond man, but he also has a boyish charm that doesn't seem to fit with the other Bonds. It's almost like he's fresh out of college and went and joined MI6, he doesn't have the polish the others have lent to the Bond character. I also think he was over hyped, the trailer on the DVD keeps talking about the "New Bond" and it was a lot to live up to, and he didn't quite make it.

Another thing I disliked about the movie was the lack of Q's gadgets. The gadgets really made the Bond movies, you couldn't wait to see what new thing Q had cooked up for Bond to use. In this movie there's no mention of gadgets for Bond, you see Q talking about radioactive pocket lint and grumbling at the end, but that's about it. The only "Q Fix" you receive is on the DVD if you have it, they have a great 11 minute segment on Desmond Llewellyn and Q's gadgets.

The thing that threw me most on the movie was the idea that Bond would be tied down to one woman for the rest of his life. He claims to love the Countess Tracy, but then turns around and sleeps with almost every woman in site, and then asks Tracy to marry him. And just when you think he's going to grow up, give up life as a secret agent and settle down, something happens that'll catapult him back into the Bond series. Of course, he, or someone else has to return as Bond.

The movie isn't bad, but when comparing the acting of Lazenby to the other Bonds is just doesn't add up. There is some beautiful scenery, a great road rally chase on ice, a bullfight and some other flashy things, but it could have been better.

Summary: Decent but flawed Bond Flick
Review: This movie is an okay bond film, but definitly not the best. Instead of excellent Sean Connery, we get sub-par George Lazenby, who does well in the fight sequences (sort of) and bad in the acting.

First the good things: The cinemetography is wonderful, (the shots of the alps and Blofeld's mountain top fortress are beautiful) the ski chases are pretty good, the car scenes are great, and the ending in unbeatable. The only bond films I know of that have a better ending than OHMSS is "You Only Live Twice" and "The Spy Who Loved Me."

Then the bad things: George Lazenby is probably the worst Bond out of all 5. Every time he kills a bad guy, he says a really stupid one-liner that ruins the sequence. Also, the close ups of Lazenby skiing and bobsledding are horrible. But hey, what can you expect from a 1969 film? Also, there's not really any action until about an hour and 30 minutes in to the movie. And since the movie is way too long (140 minutes or 2 hours and 20 minutes) it leaves enough room to squeeze in enough action to get by as a decent but flawed bond flick.

NOTE: This Bond movie is the longest Bond movie. 142 minutes, including end credits.

All in all, it's a pretty good movie. I don't neccessairly recommend buying it, but if you like good ski and bobsledding chases as well as some fast cars, you might like this Bond enough to buy it.

Last, the DVD is rather stocked, boasting good picture and sound quailty as well as a documentary on the making of the film, a featurette on Q, a featurette on filming the alps, and more.

Summary: Give it a chance
Review: This is one of those rare films that gets better with age--especially when compared to the BOND fare that we're forced to endure at the theatres these days.

Lazenby is capable enough, but the film likely bombed because of Connery's superb run in the series, which cemented public perception that 'nobody else could play Bond'. I tend to agree. But as with most of the pundits, I also agree that this is probably one of the best Bond films of the whole lot, including the superb 'From Russia...' and 'The Spy Who...'

From the action, to the supporting cast (Telly Savalas as Blofield was a stroke of genius), to the pacing, this film truly has it all.

Summary: The Best Bond Movie To Date
Review: This is definitely the best Bond movie to date, and will probably be the best ever made. This movie is obviously the most unique of all the Bond films. Take all the one time occurences: George Lazeby as Bond, Bond gets married, hardly any gadgets, we see M's home, only Bond movie set over Christmas, the list goes on and on. Though Dianna Rigg does not make the best Bond Girl (my personal favourite is Danielle Bianche), i think that the term "Bond Girl" does not even really apply here, since she becomes much more than an ordinary Bond girl.

The scenery is fantastic, the best of any Bond movie, the depiction of Switzerland in the winter is a joy to behold. Even the locations are inspired...from Blofeld's mountaintop clinic to the barn where Bond and Tracy spend Christmas night. Telly Savalas is also by far the best Blofeld of the series. The rest of my top six Bond films: 2) From Russia with Love; 3)For Your Eyes Only; 4)Tommorrow Never Dies; 5) The Living Daylights; 6) Octopussy

Summary: The Realistic Bond Movie
Review: First off let it be known that I am among the Bond fans who in their hearts hope that there are real "James Bond's" in the world. Lets face it every Bond fan wishes they could step into his shoes for a day and kick some serious butt. Drop dead gorgeous women, great looking clothes, fast cars how could this be beat. In this movie George Lazenby gives a great performance for someone who never acted before. He looked cool and chicks dug him. His fight scenes were realistic, and he moved like a cat, as Connery did. Dianna Rigg was simply gorgeous. She is a great actress that brought credibility to the role of a Bond girl, but she really was much more then that as she managed to get the great 007 to give up his bachelor ways, and actually fall in love. I challenge every man out there not to feel the same when "Tracy" makes her appearance at the ice skating ring, she looks simply ravashing. The rest of the cast including Telly Savalas, Gabriele Ferzetti, and Ilse Steppat all give great performances unrivaled in many other Bond films. The film score is without a doubt the best in the entire series. The instrumental title song drives the score on with coordinated drive and passion from the shores of the Mediterranean to the Swiss Alps with unmatched conviction. The plot is easy to follow as we are witness to the great James Bond managing to save the world, and falling in love with the love of his life. All in all a nice tight package directed expertly by Peter Hunt in his directoral debut. The action scenes, and camera work capturing them, especially the skiing are vividly breathtaking. This fact bolsters forth after viewing the movie on DVD, this formatt really brings the screen alive. For true Bond fans this movie is certainly among the top five of all time. Many believe, as I do that Connery was the best Bond, if he would have done this movie, with the emotional ending his legend in the role would have grown ten fold. Buy this movie, with the special features added on DVD only makes a great film even better. Real Bond fans know this film is a winner, anybody who suggests otherwise really misses the point. Gadgets, excessive shooting, and explosions are not needed to bring the greatest cinematic spy in history to life. This movie is the essence why many of us hold the Bond legend dear and close to our hearts.
