Rating: Summary: THE BEST VIET NAM MOVIE EVER MADE!!! Review: BEST BOOTCAMP I HAVE EVER SEEN IN A MOVIE. SO CLOSE TO THE REAL THING IT BUGS ME!!!
Rating: Summary: What is the point Review: No letterbox + monaural sound = bad DVD. Wait until WB gets their act together
Rating: Summary: uncompromising and yes, great Review: too often terms like 'great' are attributed to popular or even just competent films which don't deserve anything close to such praise. this is not one of those films. full metal jacket is an experience; approach it with intelligence and sensitivity and you cannot help but be changed. buy this movie, watch it, and walk away different.
Rating: Summary: best vietnam movie Review: I thought this movie was outstanding, particularly the first half which is the best boot camp sequence to date. R. Lee Ermey gives a great performance as the drill instructor as does Vincent D'Onofrio as the ill fated pvt. Pyle. One of Kubricks best and that says a lot in itself.
Rating: Summary: look below Review: possibly the best war film ever made
Rating: Summary: Only halfway good Review: If you are looking for the ultimate Vietnam movie, this is not it. It is unfortunately not even a good Vietnam movie, because as soon as the action leaves the boot camp all the life is gone from the film. The first half of the movie is riveting due to the perfect performances of Vincent D'Onofrio and and R. Lee Ermey, but once the action of the film moves to Vietnam, their characters have made their exits. So what's left is a handful of vaguely defined and uncharismatic characters going through a disconnected series of vignettes, none of which generate much interest. The first time I watched the film, I came out of it remembering only the boot camp sequence. I watched that part of the movie on television several times subsequently and always changed the channel as soon as that part was over. When the DVD was released, I went ahead and bought it and watched it all the way through again. I realized that not only was the Vietnam half of the movie unmemorable, it was almost unbearable. Scene after pointless scene, I watched for any signs of Kubrick's usual touch, but what I saw just made me feel like I was watching some forgettable John Wayne war movie, only without a John Wayne character to focus on. Still, the first half of the movie is fun to watch and bears repeated viewings, so the movie isn't a total wash. For a much better war movie by Kubrick, see Paths of Glory.
Rating: Summary: The Best Viet Nam Movie Ever Made Review: Forget the overwrought histrionics of Platoon and The Deer Hunter; only the understated storyline and superb performances of Full Metal Jacket convey the dehumanizing crush that lies at the heart of the Viet Nam experience. Nearly every scene in the movie is extraordinarily memorable. The disjointed nature of the film conveys a true sense of the rootless existence that is life in the combat zone. The comic relief provided by Hartman and Joker are in perfect juxtaposition to the intrinsic weightiness of the subject matter. Lee Ermey should have won the Academy Award for comedic brutality for his portrayal of the prototypical USMC drill instructor. Everything from characters such as the by-the-numbers Colonel at the mass grave to the encounters with various prostitutes gives this film the ring of authenticity. Kubrick supresses his own judgements and provides the audience with the best Nam movie ever made!!!
Rating: Summary: Outstanding Review: I've seen a lot of comments from people trying to say that there are movies superior to this one. As a vetern of this war, I can say with some authority that this one very accurate film, well acted and staged. I never thought that I'd enjoy watching a film on this topic. But I find I never tire of seening this film This is not to say that there aren't other films of this calibre, ie. Saving Private Ryan, Hamburger Hill, Pork Chop Hill, All Quiet on the Western Front, Sahara, etc.,etc.,etc. Quite simply these are all great films and trying to say one is greater then the other is an exercise in futility. We all have favorite films, but we need to be able to recognise when more then one film excels
Rating: Summary: A Great Movie Review: This was a great movie. It is one of the only Vietnam movie that include real events like the Tet Offensive (1968). The best part of the movie is that you are seeing through the eyes of a soldier in the war. A must see for anyone who likes war movies or stanley Kubrick.
Rating: Summary: Best Film on Marine Boot Camp & City Fighting in Vietnam Review: Having served with in Marine Corps (as a grunt) in Vietnam, it appears to this reviewer that Kubrick has truly captured the essense of both Marine Corps boot camp and the horrific fighting in Hue in 1968. Some previous reviews have not been so glowing, but this reviewer suspects that they know not of which they speak. The film is intentionally disjointed as life was during that time for those who served. The film has a rather open and non-resolute ending - as did Vietnam for the United States. The images and camera work is top-notch as well as the tactical essense of the film. Having watched this movie several times, this reviewer believes it to be the most important addition to anyone's film library on the Vietnam War.
