Summary: A TANTALIZING AND PASSIONATE FILM!
Review: This movie was a grade a film. The cinemotography and all-star cast made it a wonder. The setting of the plot in war torn Italy and Egypt was exquisitely nostalgic. Ralp Fiennes as always was hypnotic to watch, especially at the side of such an equally passionate leading lady, Kristin Scott Thomas. The chemistry was very tangible especially in the flashback scenes. Juliet Binoche, William Dafoe and "KIP" deserve equal praise for theeir marvellous performances. I was overwhelmed and overawed when I saw this film at the cinema. The DVD reproduces the experience of the cinema all over again with perfect clarity and clean lines. You cannot loose any of the magnetism of this film with the DVD.

Summary: Exceptional, literate -- and not the book
Review: The English Patient is a complex, multi-layered movie, one that doesn't telegraph every emotion or write its characters' motivations on their foreheads. I suppose it's possible that it might lose casual viewers, given those qualities; I wouldn't know, because I find it mesmerizing. A whole lot of things are right about this movie. First off, from the very first moment of the credits the soundtrack is among the most distinctive and engaging you'll ever hear. The Marta Sebastyen folk song at the beginning is woven through the story; it, like the rest of the music, touches on the movie's subtexts (about personal and national identities, for example). The music mirrors the movie; it keeps turning things around and showing you sides you didn't expect. The acting is wonderful. Leaving alone Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas, the secondary roles are filled by people like Colin Thomas (who's flawless by the way). Juliette Binoche, who in my mind was much more than a supporting actor in this film, is incapable of hitting a false note. (Well, figuratively speaking, anyway. Forget that piano...) Some of the criticism of the romance in English Patient strikes me as missing the movie's voice. This film doesn't pander, it doesn't overtell the obvious. I think some of the people saying they aren't convinced by Scott Thomas are just impatient with the unconventional story form, and miss things about her performance because they want it all handed to them. (If you like that, hey, there are plenty of heavy handed movies you could check out instead. Go watch something in which everyone describes their emotions as they're having them -- say, an episode of Sisters on Lifetime.) The historical setting is lavish. It certainly isn't a gritty documentary sort of a thing, things are gorgeous to look at, but then this sort of movie is supposed to be visually stunning. Out of Africa struck me much the same way -- sort of a "heightened realism for the movies" deal. Above all else The English Patient is literate and intelligent, and I think it demands those qualities in its audience. There's a catch. I've run into a few people who read the book first and who were disappointed in the movie. This isn't Michael Ondaatje's novel, it's an adaptation. I personally enjoyed them both, but I'd warn you not to start up this tape with the expectation that it hit every note in the book. (And hey, if you read the book, how did you expect it to be adapted perfectly to film anyway?) Finally, I'd say the wide screen version is the only one. If you like to fill the TV screen, buy a wide screen TV.

Summary: Not too shabby
Review: This movie is sad and depressing...but I can't help but watch it. Juliette Binoche is by far the best actress in it, and I can relate to her character. There wasn't much chemistry between Fiennes and Scott Thomas, though, and that's what drags the movie down a bit. Also... I hate Fiennes character. He's a total jerk before he gets burned. But then, that speaks of this movie's power to move people (not out of their seats- hardy har har). Overall, I think this movie is really good.

Summary: A TRUE CLASSIC
Review: The English Patient is one of the best movies to come out in the last years. As some of the reviewers have stated, if you get into it, you will be mesmerized. The acting is sublime with Scott Thomas and Binoche being outstanding, particularly Scott Thomas.I think that the chemistry between Fiennes and Thomas was really there. The score is really beautiful,capturing the film tender and passionate moments.The cinematography is impressive. Watch it and you will be rewarded. It is a classic,the movie was released more than three years ago and we are still talking about it.

Review: The English Patient is a film that you must pay close attention to. If you attempt to view it with a casual attitude, you're bound to miss something vital to the understanding of the plot (the story is intricate). Overall the movie is coherent and thoroughly thought out. The cinematography is excellent and the acting is also worthy (Ralph Fiennes and Kristin Scott Thomas perform well in their roles). The English Patient is long in length, but it keeps a good pace and isn't boring; films can't always finish up in ninety minutes. I think that this movie is well-made and viewable. One of the better films that I've seen lately. I actually give The English Patient 3.5 stars.

Review: I really liked this movie, it made me think a lot, it was very well directed, and writen by a good Canadian boy. Ralph Fiennes was exelent, he really got robbed for best supporting actor in Schindlers List, it was good to see him so great in this movie.

Summary: Choppy glorification of adultery
Review: This movie is the most overrated movie of the last few years. It's too long and it's poorly directed. I realize that everyone who turns to this review will be a fan of the movie in advance, which is why you're here, but I have to disagree with you all, and with The Academy, and go in writing saying this is not much of a movie. I was happy that the adulterous lady ended up the way she did. Actually I think I'd leave the whole movie in a cave somewhere. Dippy pseudo-romance that goes on and on, and there's no one to root for or care about. I hate these people.

Review: Two Sentences: This is unduobtedly best movie of all time! And Winner of 9 academy awards including: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress: (Juliette Binoche)and, Best director: (Anthoney Minghella). And I guarentee you that this movie will keep you awake, excited and make you want to read the wonderful novel by Michael Odaantje

Summary: Not Titanic
Review: If you want the usual gooey type of romance Hollywood specialises in go elsewhere, this is a story of relationships between real flawed people told with a passion not found in more than one film in a decade. Yes these are people to whom it is difficult to relate but then it is pre war Egypt and it is pretty much the last days of colonialism we are witnessing. If intricate plotting fine acting and glorious cinematography are not for you then dont buy this DVD but you will be missing one of the greats.
