Summary: A Poorly Produced Production
Review: As an afectionada of the stage version of CATS, I was among those who eagerly awaited the arrival of the CATS Video. Unfortunately, the Video is a tremendous letdown. Instead of putting their best feet forward and producing an accurate permanent record of this historic show, the creative team seems to have fallen asleep at the wheel.

The editing of the video is inexcusably choppy. There are numerous lapses in continuity and characters that suddenly appear to 'jump' across the set. It is perplexing that, although CATS is known as a dance musical, the best sections of Gillian Lynne's choreography are omitted. The dance scenes that do appear in the video seem to have been filmed from the most unflattering angles available.

The casting choices are also questionable. Sir John Mills, for instance, is completely miscast, and seems to have very little enthusiasm or understanding of his role. Onstage, Gus is a completely different, and extremely funny, character. Elaine Paige was the original London Grizabella, but other actresses, such as Tony Award winner Betty Buckley, might have done a better job with the role. Many of the supporting performers, who came directly from the London and Broadway productions of CATS, were extremely talented, but were undermined by the editing and staging.

Now that CATS has closed on Broadway, it is quite sad to think that this truncated, slapdash video will represent the show. CATS was a magical production onstage, and it deserved much better.

Summary: A movie for Jellicle Cats!!!!!!!
Review: This movie was one of the most wonderful movies I have ever seen. My friends and I have become addicted to it. If we're not dancing to it we're singing the words. The actors in it were wonderful and the music was beautiful. Elaine Paige's "Memory" tugs at your heart. It made me cry. Andrew Lloyd Webber outdid himself with this one. this play is truly amazing. It's too bad I never saw it on Broadway but since I'll never get that chance I'm happy settling for the movie. So.... "Jellicle cats come one come all...." and get lost in the remarkable world of cats that will stay with you forever!!!!!!

Summary: Enter a world you wish you could stay in
Review: I've loved the music for this show for years, and have books about the show, but had never managed to go see it. Now it's too late. However, the DVD is the next best thing, and it's arguable that the quality of the musical score in this release beats actually 'being there', for there is a much larger orchestra playing, something that would be hard to do with a real play and still be within a realistic budget. The Dolby 5.1 soundtrack is crystal clear, and well mixed. Visual quality overall is excellent, and the show's performers rise to the occasion and delight you with nearly every action. I have watched this show now many times over, and am sure I will continue to watch it. Further, I'd bet YOU would watch it more than once, too. :) It's wonderful, and one can find themselves wishing to enter this world, even if only for a while. Buy it, enjoy!

Summary: Go cats, go cats...
Review: I love this movie. Points: - Everyone was performing really well and really getting into the part, which is good. - Did they have to make Macavity so mental? I always thought of him as a more sly and sneaky character. How could Bombularina and Electra sing 'He's outwardly respectable' when confronted with the mad hairy beast? - I didn't know it was lip-synched - I couldn't tell. How do we know it is? - Andrew Lloyd Webber's music is NOT twaddle! What does that reviewer think he's talking about? - Ditto for the lighting supposedly being ruined by being shown on TV. I thought it was great. - I thought Old Deuteronomy's last song was kinda dull, although performed well - it isn't the best one to end with, and also I wish Grizabella could have been transformed into the beauty she was once when she ascended into the sky. - I really, REALLY want to see Cats live! Watch this video if you can't do that, I really recommend it if you like musicals.

Summary: Cats - I Want to be a Cat
Review: What can I say about "Cats", Wow! This stage play put on video and DVD is amazing. I received the DVD as a gift, before which time I had never seen "Cats."

One of the things I noticed was that it took me no time at all to believe the actors were "Cats." The make-up, choreography, and music outstanding! I found myself singing along with the cast. Makes me want to be a cat!

This play also makes me question, were people at one time "Cats"? Andrew Lloyd Webber has made a fan and a believer out of me. I found "The Making of Cats" an interesting documentary. The documentary can be found as an extra feature on the DVD.

The whole family can enjoy cats. Can't recommend it enough.

Summary: I liked this movie but...
Review: the major disappointment was that it was almost entirely lip-synced. Other than that, the dancing is superb and the cast combines the best from all the various productions. I loved being able to see up close and personal that which I would never have been able to see if I saw it in the theatre.

If you love "Cats" you have to see this movie--because this is the only place to see it now that it is no longer on Broadway.

Summary: Cats
Review: This is a wonderful video for adults and children. My 2 1/2 year old can't get enough of it. If you like to watch very talented people sing and dance, and enjoy the wonderful music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, this is the video for you. We found ourselves singing the songs in the car, at the park, and at bedtime. And each of our family members has "become" one of the characters. I like the messages my kids get about diversity, respect, fun, happiness, and community. I cannot say enough good about it. A+++
