Rating: Summary: Those who don't like it are "Shakespeare in Love" fans Review: Plain and simple, people who don't like this film are simply "Shakespeare in Love" fans. As if there were a competition of some kind. The fact of the matter is that "Elizabeth" is an extraordinary film. I didn't know that a period film could be beautiful, mesmerizing, clever, innovative, striking, appealing, and above all, entertaining as "Elizabeth" is. The director of this film did a marvelous job--a brilliant story told in a visually stunning way. But the maddest props go out to the cast...particularly Cate Blanchett in the title role. She is spectacular as Elizabeth! Talk about Oscar Schmoscar! The Oscar SHOULD'VE gone to Cate, and not to Gwyneth's joke of a performance. It's good to know that Cate won many film critics awards--that proves which performance was clearly the year's best.
Rating: Summary: Simply fantastic. Review: "Elizabeth" is an extraordinary, masterful, fascinating period piece that brings contemporary realism into the tale of the Virgin Queen. It's a shame that some people around here dislike it so. Maybe they saw a different movie, because what I experienced was one of the best films of 1998!
Rating: Summary: not good at all Review: I went to see this movie in the theatre and hearing good things about it, I expected a good movie. I'm sure that it had an enjoyable plot but I couldn't concentrate on anything except the fact that the entire movie was unbelievably dark. I was practically begging for a little bit of color. The other 4 people that I went with felt the same way and we were all extremely dissapointed when we left the theatre.
Rating: Summary: Beautifully produced, but disappointing film... Review: My initial reaction after viewing this one was, "WHY wasthis film nominated for BEST PICTURE, when it really wasn't all thatgreat?!!" I mean, aside from the impressive period feel and costuming, I found little to recommend! Still, there's little else out there regarding this historical subject, so those interested in England's reformation period will probably enjoy it.
Rating: Summary: Cate Blanchett deserved the Oscar Review: This movie was both educational and entertaining. Cate Blanchett did a superb job and deserved the Oscar as best actress, not Gwyneth Paltrow. The fact that Paltrow won shows how political the Oscars really are.
Rating: Summary: Something more than a biography... Review: Cate Blanchett, the best Elizabeth you've ever seen, shows usthe passion for love; but sometimes the circumstances sends us onanother way of life...We just need to see our priorities and decide about the rest of our lives.
Rating: Summary: Elizabeth is not worthy Review: Historically incorrect to the point of stupidity, this film made me leave the room several times in the course of viewing it. What poison dress? It didn't happen! Anjou was Elizabeth's FINAL suitor at age 45, and they get him confused with his brother, the transvestite king of France! Francis Walsingham didn't appear on the scene until much later in the reign & Robert Dudley went on to lead her armies against the Spanish in Europe; he was not the whipped dog you see presented here. The people who conceived this film counted on the stupidity of the American public; shame on them.
Rating: Summary: About a half hour too long. Review: This one is okay if you like historical costume films and has a fine acting performance in it by Cate Blanchett. It's worth looking at, but I don't share the excitement of many others.
Rating: Summary: Crappy melodrama pretending to be history Review: I sincerely hope that no one is assuming that this DVD has anything to do with history. Elizabeth had an amazing life but this film is all style and absolutely no substance
Rating: Summary: Not one of the best films of the year Review: Elizabeth received seven Oscar nominations. Blanchett should have won for Best Actress but the Picture nomination was in no way deserved. This film is good but can't decide whether or not it is a political thriller or an historial drama. It needs to make it's mind up. Technically, the film is stunning from the great sets and costumes, the music and the Oscar winning make up. But the script, direction and the overall film itself should be placed in the box labelled okay. Geoffrey Rush steals the show and it's a true wonder why he wasn't Oscar nominated for this but was for his average performance in Shakespeare in Love.
