Summary: Hate when this happens
Review: I bought the Notting Hill DVD when it first was released. Love the movie. For me it's one of those movies I can watch over and over again for various reasons. Great cast, rich characters, etc. HOWEVER...I can't stand when I put out ($) for a DVD and a few months later, another DVD with more features hits the shelves. So now the dilemma is, do I spend even more money for the new DVD just so I can have the few extras I didn't get on the first one? Just put out the best DVD in the first place! Or make the extras available without having to buy the movie again.

Summary: A Great film ..with lots of British Humor
Review: When I first encountered this film I was not a Julia Roberts fan at the time. Now I am. She has matured and this movie is an example of her possibilities as a great actress. A funny love story with lots of twists and turns of fate. Hugh Grant also does a fabulous job as leading man and plays the English book store owner part very well. Very convincing portrayal with nice suprises. How chance can change our lives. How opportunities can be shared or lost without "present moment awareness". Recommended for adults because of a few naughty words. A good movie to laugh and relax watching after a long day. Everytime I watch it I see something new to bring me back.

Summary: Julia Robert shines her legendary smile in this perfectmovie
Review: i've been reading some of people's negative reviews about the same old plain story line, same old acting and over used production sets. for the people whose life is to investigate and find out moles and faults from movie, so called, movie critics, this movie is sure to bomb and make you will feel like you wasted your time by sitting and watching this over produced hollywood love story. i can feel what they might have felt. but for most of the people whose intention for movie is pure entertainment to have a little bit of break from their busy life other than just watching movies all day, this one was simple romantic and fairy tale story that could possibly happen and every men can dream of. for this simple story line and acting role as a mega movie super star, Julie Roberts has done very well describing the life of out-ripped hollywood star's life, probably it should have been probably the most revealing role she has ever done in her career. well, some of parts and acting were felt a little overaction. for example, grant's flatmate's acting was rather dull than funny. probably i'm not quite used to british joke or comedy to understand his behavior. but, it made me skip the movie every time he comes up :) anyway, it's good movie that i want to recommend to any one who needs some pop corn with soda drink on friday night with girlfriends.

Summary: If you like Roman Holiday....buy it instead of Notting Hill.
Review: Like so many movies of recent memory, Notting Hill borrows liberally and unashamedly from Hollywood's Golden Age - in this case, Roman Holiday (1953) - and fails to hold a candle to its predecessor. Do yourself a favor if you're looking to build a worthwhile Romantic Comedy collection: rather than owning SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE or YOU'VE GOT MAIL, go out and find AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER (1957) or SHOP AROUND THE CORNER (1940) instead. In fact, while we're talking about Leo McCarey and Ernst Lubitsch, let's add THE AWFUL TRUTH (1937) and TROUBLE IN PARADISE (1932) - two classics that defined the genre. That said, the story itself really isn't too bad here. Sort of a role-reversed fairy tale, where the Princess (movie star Roberts) - after a series of misfires - rescues the Peasant (bookstore owner Grant) from his uninspiring little world, and they live happily ever after. But as the movie began to bog down, I found myself wishing it were a book, so that I could imagine genuinely charming and interesting characters in the lead roles, instead of stiff Julia and sluggish Hugh. I can't fathom what is so intriguing about Hugh Grant. Just as in FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL, he walks - no, he loafs - through this film. His intentionally awkward fumbling through dialogue, which I suppose is considered adorable by his fans, painfully slows down the proceedings at every turn. And during his moments of "deep introspection", he gives shallow blank stares. And people have compared this guy to Cary Grant!?! Julia Roberts is somewhat more palatable - but not much. She's a perfect choice to play a Big Movie Star, but as such you wonder why she would ever be attracted to Grant's character. In the scene where the alleged "spark" occurs, the chemistry between the two actors is so flat that by the time she lays a big wet kiss flush on his mouth, I was compelled to rewind to find out just why and at what point the director demanded my disbelief be suspended to such a high degree. (I was COMPELLED to rewind - but I chose not to sit through the scene again.) The supporting characters are fairly likeable, and in fact they fill in some much needed color, even though Grant's roomate tries his hardest to gross us out (it's too forced, more lame than repulsive), and he inexplicably ends up engaged to be engaged to Grant's insecure, starstruck sister (nothing happens to indicate that these two have even been alone together!). In the climactic scene when Hugh finally realizes he can't live without Julia (why would anyone have said no to Julia - as he did - in the first place?), we're treated to a sloppy restaging of the final scene from - you guessed it - ROMAN HOLIDAY. With a twist: the Princess and the Peasant get together just seconds before she is scheduled to leave town forever. Ok, it's a cute idea, if the movie had only ended there. But instead we're insulted by the inclusion of a tacked-on music video montage in which we're taken by the hand and walked through their dreamy wedding (no prenup? in a marriage to a Superstar? Get real!) and an idyllic pregnancy. Some things are better left to the imagination, for cryin' out loud! Notting Hill repeats the make-a-buck-as-quickly-as-possible pattern of countless modern day productions which leave the viewer with an empty, seen-it-done-better-before feeling. That's not to say that the same thing wasn't done during the days of the old studio system - but it was usually done with flair and inspiration, with the goal being to make it BETTER than the original; and the stars were bursting at the seams with personality, giving each remake something for a moviegoer to look forward to. Hey, I'll take Gregory Peck over Hugh Grant any day.

Review: Don't forget the crackers for this cheese fest of a movie with your typical predictable story line and over-used Julia Roberts and Hugh. Why do people like the same old recycled s**t. Now an "Ultimate Edition" is being released. C'mon...please! Get a life! What a waste of money filming this one. This is for brains with limited bandwidth. Do your self a favor and skip this one.

Summary: Smart, funny, romantic comedy
Review: NOT your typical romantic comedy. A SMART film instead of one with predictable plot and dialogue. Hugh Grant is adorable, his roommate is a scream. (Do I even need to mention Julia's performance, which is of course, great.) Very enjoyable story and characters. A notable, funny cameo, and the best part - a movie that tells you how it ends up!!

Summary: Kinda Like Lays Chips, Can't Just Watch It Once!
Review: I saw this movie the first time and wasn't as impressed as I thought I might be. Then I bought it and watched it again and now claim it among my favorites. It's a comedy with lots of laughter and plenty of moments of masterful acting. You'll grow to love the group of friends who face adversity leaning on each other's shoulders. There is a moment or two where you actually even feel pity for them. Watch it again and again, you'll fall in love with it.

Summary: Romantic comedies will never die
Review: I consider myself to have a greater tolerance for 'chick flicks' than the average guy. That fact that I liked 'Notting Hill' was because I gave it half a chance. Part of the charm in a movie that deals out warm and fuzzy feelings is the utter improbability of all of it. This movie is a modern day fairy tale, it isn't a film that was made to be read too literally. Sprinked with a dose of light-heartedness, its quickly apparent that this movie is interested in winning hearts, not minds. In true chick flick style, it's boy meets girl...then in a pleasant twist, it is the GIRL who loses the guy. Only, its he who finds himself having to win her back in the end. Strange. Julia Roberts has a role I imagine wouldn't be too much of a reach for her - the world's most famous actress. Yet she plays the part with barely a touch of arrogance. Obviously the writers are not even aiming for authenticty (but we should have no problem 'believing' anything this film dishes out, right?) When famous American film star Anna Scott walks into the travel bookstore managed by daggy William Thacker (Hugh Grant, ever the sensitive and affable Englishman) in London's hip Notting Hill, she finds his down-to-Earth candor endearing, and his nervous stammering even more so. Her profession requires people to put on faces. She's attracted to his total lack of pretension, and he, is thrilled just to be looking at someone extraordinary. But with her being a famous film star and he a ordinary single bloke, the chances of love seem minimal. Aha, but this IS a modern day fairy tale. Just remember that for the grand-standing final scene where William tries to win back Anna, a scene that will leave women's hearts fluttering. It's all a bit too much to accept, even for THIS film, but it's no reason to enjoy it any less.

Review: Why oh why does Hollywood torment us with the same nonsense day in and day out? Julia's 24 capped teeth shine bright in this otherwise bland story about...oh who cares! It's Julia Roberts, the hottest actress for the next year or so, until the media finds someone else who's willing to sell out. And Hugh Grant, british chum extraordinaire, stars as...the other guy. Frankly, I could have spend my two hours cleaning the gunk from underneath my toenails with icicles. Rent a real movie instead of this rubbish!

Summary: I want two hours of my life back!
Review: This is one of the worst movies I have ever had the misfortune to watch. I would have walked out of the movie house, but I kept thinking, it had to get better. It didn't. The only thing this movie is good for, is a sleep tonic. If you suffer from insomnia, put it in the vcr and you will be out in 10 minutes. Boring, Boring, Boring.
