Summary: Only for people willing to let their imagination stargaze!
Review: The movie certainly kidnapped my imagination, in fact it kidnapped it and even demanded a ransom. The glitter, the glam, the fantastic music (I recommend memorizing the entire soundtrack!), the actors, it was all fantastic! Oh how I wish I were of an age to have experienced it all! It goes beyond the 16 yr old girl putting glitter on her face or drooling over Ewan (Sure we're on a first name basis!!), but the clothes, the atmosphere, the music! It's just marvelous, dahlin... I have always loved David Bowie, and although I almost didn't see it because of a few protesters on his behalf, I didn't feel disloyal at all! Maybe it does shadow his life too closely, and perhaps it does lack a few minor things. But the overall affect outweighs it mishaps!! And of course, it never hurts to have a few really sexy British guys in eyeliner and tight glittery pants!

Summary: Read VHS reviews on Amazon.com
Review: This was last years most important film to me. It's a multi-layered piece about identity, which touched on several hard hitting points. A visual treat, as well as sonically, I found no faults with this film. The reviews for the VHS copy on Amazon.com are a little more appropriate in my opinion.

Summary: Don't forget Toni Collette
Review: I give this movie 5 stars solely for Toni Collette. She is fantasic, and hasn't reached these heights since Muriel's Wedding, and Lillian's Story. TONI COLLETTE ALL THE WAY!!!!!

Summary: Todd Haynes Makes Another Masterpiece
Review: Velvet Goldmine is Mr. Haynes crowning glory! Superstar, Poison and Safe were the stepping stones to the pinnacle of his imagination-Velvet Golmine. A beautiful fairy tale of the glam rock scene that made me want to strap on some platform boots, put on glitter makeup and break out my Ziggy Stardust records! An absolutely gorgeous movie with what I hope are soon to be huge stars Jonathan Rhys Meyer, Christian Bale and the most-definatley-will-be-absolutely-huge-after-Star Wars-comes-out Ewan Mcgregor. Toni Collette as Angie Bowie should have garnered her an Academy Awards nod for supporting actress. What a fantastically original movie!! Don't believe the hype that this is just a Ken Russell rip-off(what has he done since the awful Whore anyway!??) Enjoy!!

Summary: Eye candy in a good way
Review: The movie is fluff, but it's beautiful fluff with fantastic costumes and a great soundtrack. Have fun spotting the many, many, many obvious visual references to David Bowie's posters and albums!

Summary: Todd Haynes adds yet another masterpiece to his filmography
Review: Velvet Goldmine adds yet another star to the sparkling constellation of Todd Haynes movies. Like his previous "Poison" and "Safe", here's a film which accomplishes the difficult task of harmonizing extremely sophisticated narrative techniques and the restlessness of a very creative director. The screenplay, designed with masterly precision, brings back into life through the throbbing imagery of the 70s the lyricism of a time when people sincerely believed sex and love could be above gender distinction. A crew of resourceful professionals - amongst whom oscar nominee and winner Sandy Powell (she won actually for "Shakespeare in Love") - provide the balance between Haynes inventiveness and the more straightforward aspects of mass media entertainment.

Ewan McGregor and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers carry out their performances with the vibrating ferocity of the 70s; the kaleidoscopic energy that dictates their eagerness for experiences contrasts perfectly with Christian Bale's slow-paced melancholy. The eyes of the reporter who tracks down the past reluctantly avoid the bitterness of confronting the colorful promisses of his early youth and the cold blue conditions of the present.

The clashing of these confliting elements provide the glare from which Velvet Goldmine procures its exquisite flavor, both sensuous and touching, provocative and moving; like the 70s belief in the possibility of a better dealing with the demands of sex and love, this is a film that will "linger ever" in the history of our fragmented culture, spreading its light to warn those who pretend to be satisfied with the kind of life we developped in so many years of civilization.

Summary: The best film I`ve ever seen
Review: I`ve seen for two times already, but I will go to cinema next week again. The music is good, actors are handsome and the idea of the film is brilliant. I like it.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Beautifully piquant - but is that a bad thing?
Review: As an obsessive fan of David Bowie, I was warned against this movie. As a curious moviewatcher, I went and saw it anyway. It was breathtaking. Several elements are, obviously, taken from Bowie's life. But it is shallow to condemn the movie on that basis. Velvet Goldmine stands, glittering, as one of the very best movies I have ever seen. And the soundtrack is one of the best I have ever heard. Both will definitely join my collection and be well used.
