Review: I would recommend Elizabeth R to only those who are interested in the period of Elizabeth the 1st for that the details, the characters and the events might appear to complicated to those who do not know the background.But those who are in possession of knowledge concerning that part of the history will for sure take an immense pleasure in watching the episodes... A % 100 true interpretation of the history and perfect performances from all the artists... I couldn't stop myself watching 4 DVDs in one single night and again and again... As a fascinated person by the character and deeds of Elizabeth the 1st, I was more than surprised to find in the episode exactly what I dreamt of her: wit, charisma, intelligence, determination, strong feelings, perfect mastery of language... I recommended it wholeheartedly to all those who are interested in the history...

Review: Elizabeth is the story of the queen of England from her youth to her death.Her struggle in her life was dramatic but heoric.Not only because she battle Spain, but also because she remained a strong, loved and with a great mind and intelect. The cast was great and their performance was just like her life.

Summary: Excellent Account with Depth
Review: This series is an excellent look at the life of Queen Elizabth I. Glenda Jackson portrays the Queen in fine fashion and while they take some dramatic license it is true and accurate. The historical commentary really gives depth to the series and the bonus CD is excellent for even more insights into this period of time. This is a keeper for your collection.

Summary: If you are fascinated with Tudors, see this.
Review: I know that BBC historical dramas are not for everyone. But if you enjoy the stories of the Tudor period, you should see this set of DVDs. All of your favorite personalities will visit you in your living room! Dudley, Burleigh, Walsingham, Mary of Scotland, and more, of course. And if you have been following these stories in the works of Alison Weir, you will also be delighted to see the interview with Alison, and hear her commentary over some of the scenes in the episodes. I only wish there had been more historical commentary--I'm sure that each scene has pages and pages of background. This has provided many hours of pleasure for me. It is definitely worth having. Treat yourself.

Summary: Renaissance Costumers will LOVE this!
Review: If you are interested in the life of Queen Elizabeth I, you should see this BBC series. If you do any Elizabethan Costuming, you will love the series, and absolutely adore the entire DVD of extras including pictures of actors and portraits of their counterparts, plus a section of color pictures all costuming the queen. There were very few dresses in the series worn by Jackson that I could not name the portrait which they were based on. This is not your average movie costuming job, this is a very researched and stunning display of what Elizabethan clothing should look like. It makes the other costumes in recent Elizabethan movies I've seen look like halloween costumes.

Summary: this series rocks!!
Review: i admire elizabeth tudor for all she accomplished as queen, etc.-but, i admire her most for making the best of her very uncertain beginnings, for determining to be nothing like her odious mother, for her fairness. she could have chosen to give up but she did not. neither did she walk on people to get what she wanted. if i handle my affairs with 1/2 as much aplomb as she did hers, i'll have done well. glenda jackson brought her alive.

Summary: Get it on DVD!
Review: The DVD is amazing, the picture is clearer and sharper than the original VHS, and there are tons of extras!! There is a whole disc with extras including a rare and extensive recent interview with the phenomenal Glenda Jackson, now a member of British Parliament. She talks in candor about her acting preparation for this role, her views on Elizabeth herself, and her comparison to Elizabeth in modern day politics as she sees it herself. She also does new readings of some of the most famous speeches of Elizabeth's reign, including the Tillbury speech and the Golden speech. I just love hearing her act again, after such a long dryspell. There is the hour long A&E biography of Elizabeth which costs you...if you were to buy it separately. Alison Weir, one of the most respected modern day Tudor historians is also interviewed and she also provides commentary during each of the episodes (you can turn her commentary on or off). There are also photographs of Glenda Jackson's fittings for the famous costumes and other portraits of the Queen and her contemporaries side-by-side with the actors that are portraying them. It's really a wonderful DVD. I already have the VHS tapes, but DVD's last a lifetime, and it's a wonderful way to preserve this most remarkable of all Masterpiece Theater presentations.

Summary: You better be a history buff to sit through this one.
Review: While the acting, dialogue and costuming are done well, with Glenda Jackson a clear standout, the series requires you to overlook some serious production shortcomings. The sound is a bit below average and the stage looks as if it was lit with a search light. The glaring, terribly lit scenes began to wear on me after the second installment. I have a lot of interest in the topic but I find it difficult to bear for more than an hour at a time.

Review: I first saw this series presented on my local PBS station when I was in seventh grade. That was many years ago, and the images of Glenda Jackson portraying Elizabeth I fueled my interest in Medievel history. This is one of the most well conceived, written and filmed pieces to date about this amazing monarch. A must see for anyone who has even the slightest interest in Elizabethan history.

Summary: DVD image quality far superior to VHS version
Review: Elizabeth R has been one of my all-time favorites. I remember seeing it on PBS when it was originally broadcast 30 some years ago. I always hoped it would come to VHS. The VHS version looked good, but the DVD looks great. Although there are a few noticeble flaws and glitches in the transfer, the image quality is far superior to last year's release of "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" on DVD. Elizabeth R's color, brightness, and contrast at times are dazzling. It looks as if it was filmed yesterday. Now, what do I do with the VHS copy for which I paid $...?
