Summary: Superbly choreographed Dickens' musical.
Review: This musical is a great standbye for years to come. Mark Lester and the rest of his entourage, make this Dickens' a classic in every since. The songs, some of which are old standards, like "Consider Yourself" and "Where is Love" we hear on the radio often. The movie is full of great choreography and music. Buy this and then sit back and enjoy one of the best musicals of the 20th century.

Summary: Shani Wallis was great.
Review: It is a dramatic, yet touching film. The songs will make you want to get up and dance along with Jack Wild, Ron Moody, and all the other actors and actresses. My particular favoroite was Nancy's " As Long as He Needs Me." It has a sad yet tragic ending . It is set in old London. But take my word for it! buy this Wonderful film and watch it over and over and over and over again.

Summary: Outstanding music and choreography!
Review: Oliver! I saw this movie at a formative age and was moved on many levels. Ron Moody's Oscar winning portrayal of Fagan, the seedy old rat of the pick pocket school, was superb. To see him singing and dancing across the sewers of Dickens's London was worth much more than the price of admission.

The song and dance number of "Who Will Buy" was truly inspired bit of choreography. It somehow ineffably portrays the dance of life in almost cosmic proportions.

A truly beautiful film.

Review: A wonderful adaption of the hit broadway musical! Remarkable choreography makes an excellent show!

Summary: A musical for the die-hard fan.
Review: I remembered this movie fondly from when I was a kid. Looking at it now, I'm awfully glad I enjoyed it then. Now it seems awfully forced. I dare any adult to get through the numerous production numbers without chuckling. But for kids (I suspect very young kids) this may be a completely different experience. With songs like "Consider Yourself" and "Food, Glorious Food" it's hard to deny a certain hum-ability. And there's the classic victim diva anthem "As Long As He Needs Me". The presentation is first rate, with a widescreen (only) transfer and a good "making of" documentary. END

Summary: CONSIDER THIS ONE A WINNER - OSCAR WINNER, THAT IS!
Review: Carol Reed's "Oliver!" is the musical version of Dicken's Oliver Twist. It stars Mark Lester as the irrepressible street urchin, suckered into the lair of a vagabond by The Artful Dodger (Jack Wild) and forced into a life of crime by Fagin (Ron Moody). But when Oliver is salvaged from the slums by a benevolent philanthropist, Bill Sikes (Oliver Reed) decides to make a quick buck off of the trade. Shani Willis costars as Sikes' girlfriend, Nancy, who thwarts the kidnapping plot and pays for her betrayal with her life. This is a very stoic, stagy and rather dry musical that may capture the essence of Dickens in its settings characters and plot but seems totally out of touch with the effervescence of the traditional Hollywood musical. Even with such main staple songs as "Consider Yourself", "Boy For Sale" and "Food, Glorious Food", truly, the spoon full of sugar remains a bitter pill to swallow on this occasion.

Columbia Tri-Star has made "Oliver" available in a startlingly good looking transfer. Colors are solid, rich, vibrant and bold. Contrast levels are exactly where they should be. Blacks are incredibly deep. Fine detail is fully realized. Only occasionally do age related artifacts betray the vintage of the film. The audio is 5.1 and wonderfully spread across all five channels of the sound field. There are no extras. This film is spread across two sides of a single disc. The break comes at the point of intermission.

Summary: Dickens would have been proud
Review: Many filmhistorians praise the 1948 film, but Carol Reed`s adaption of the Broadway play is a miracle come true. Sit back and enjoy a landmark in the history of "from Broadway to Hollywood"-musicals:-)... This and CABARET 1972 were the truly last great musicals.... Fortunately the genre was revived through the 90s via Disney and now we can enjoy Evita, Moulin Rouge, Chicago and The Phantom of the Opera.

Summary: "Consider yourself one of the family"
Review: Oliver! is the musical version of Dickens' tale about an orphan on his own in Olde England. Oliver is born in a miserable workhouse and eventually taken in by an old thief and his merry band of boys who train him to be a pick-pocket. He meets some memorable characters along the way: Ron Moody plays the infamous Fagin, the leader of the thieves, with sinister delight. Jack Wild (the Artful Dodger) steals all his scenes with his talent and charm. Mark Lester, as Oliver, is a little wooden but looks the part and is appealing. Oliver Reed plays nasty villain Bill Sikes, and is convincingly repellant. Shani Wallis is good as his girlfriend, Nancy, the street girl with a heart of gold.

Lionel Bart's music for Oliver! is absolutely enchanting. Each song is memorable and the big production numbers are a joy to behold. As the Artful Dodger welcomes Oliver to London with "Consider Yourself," and the street vendors sing the beautiful, "Who Will Buy?", you are swept away into a magical world. "You've Got to Pick a Pocket or Two" and "Reviewing the Situation" are Fagin's comic numbers that make you like him in spite of himself. Oliver! won the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1968. I heartily recommend it for the whole family.

Summary: Great Movie, but..........
Review: Don't get me wrong, Oliver is a fabulous musical. A great adaptation of Charles Dickens classic. My 3 stars for this is because the DVD could have been so much better. First of all this is advertised as the 30th Anniversary edition. Well where are the extras? An Oliver reunion, or making of commentary with the stars would have been such a great addition. My understanding is all of the leads are still alive and breathing. Why didn't you get them for this? Also....BIG complaint.....If Titanic, which is over 3 hours long, can be put on one side of a DVD then WHY did this movie have to be put on two sides? When watching a movie I do not want to have to get up, eject the DVD, turn it over and start part two. That should have gone out with Laserdiscs. VERY BIG DISAPPOINTMENT! Alll in all , a great movie. Hopefully for the 40th Anniversary the studio will re-release this THE RIGHT WAY!
