Rating: Summary: pure fun... Review: This is a truly wonderful and funny movie. I watched this with my Irish father and he took no offense and was very entertained! This is a STORY. It is not intended to reflect or comment on modern day irish society. It allowed me to escape to this twisted and crazy situation and forget the real world for a while. Is that such an awful reason to see and like a movie?
Rating: Summary: outstanding entertainment Review: We have seen this movie twice and can't wait to see it again and again. It has one of the best opening scenes in a movie that we have ever witnessed. It starts off with a bang and only get's better!
Rating: Summary: The "Quiet Man" or "Awaking of Ned Devin",? Review: The coast line and the "Fisherman Blues", by the "Water Boys",was almost too perfect, the rest of the movie was to much believe. Each beautifull and homely scene built on each other untill you had no idea how the story would end or when to stop lauging. This is a movie that needs to be add to your library. PS. how many brands of IRISH WHISKEY do you remeber??
Rating: Summary: Heartbreakingly Beautiful Scenery Review: This movie is fantastic, mainly for the scenery and the acting. The ironic thing is that is not really an "Irish" film, as it was shot entirely in the Isle of Man. It is a bit of a shame that it has to peddle the stereotypes, but I know our Celtic soul brother in Dublin must have been checking the sailing times to Douglas nevertheless.
Rating: Summary: Best movie I've seen in a long time! Review: I miss my grandparents after seeing this movie. It's one of "those" movies where you laugh, cry and think...
Rating: Summary: Optimistic with fun and scenery Review: The second time it's still great. Such optimism, great cast of characters (including the landscape). Not to be missed. A real break in the day. Leave your cynicism @ the door and enjoy. A must see (and likely collect.)
Rating: Summary: Mr. Dublin ought to have some more whiskey Review: Yeah, it was supposed to be just about Irish people. Yeah, it was all about Irish kitsch. And the Irish are the ones who discovered what potatoes can do. Give me a break. This is a classic film with deep tones of community and understanding. It's lighthearted and funny and serious at the same time, and the people who take this at more than its face value ought to get the plug outta their &^*$ and have some of my bourbon stout. A splendid movie with excellent cinematography, superb casting, and a very good performance by Ian McKellan, I'll be purchasing Waking Ned Devine the minute it comes out on videotape. Which, hopefully, will be very soon.
Rating: Summary: Uplifting story with awesome views from the Isle of Man Review: Funny and wholesome movie that features fine acting and breathtaking views from the Isle of Man,which is located between Ireland and England. The interaction between the two main characters, who live in a tiny village and the "lotto man" from Dublin is priceless. The villagers are hard pressed to use all their cultural traits to work their way out of a difficult situation.
Rating: Summary: Monumentally Awful Review: Truely one of the worst movies I have ever had the misfortune to lay eyes on. I award this one star only because the Amazon ranking system does not allow zero ( or negative !) stars in the rating options. I thought "The Quiet Man" was a bad enough representation of an "Oirish" movie but Waking Ned explores previously uncharteded depths. I know this movie is supposed to be a light piece of whimsy and not to be taken too seriously. Believe me, I am as open to whimsy as the next person but when one sees how much better it can be ( and has been ) done - "Whisky Galore" immediately comes to mind - it is just bloody annoying to have to sit through this mindless drivel. A movie clearly designed for the mass American market of tourists who come to Ireland , wearing lime green trousers, dreadful garish jackets and proclaiming themselves to be "Irish". I am amazed that this movie has been a success. It deserves to wither away and die.
Rating: Summary: 40 shades of wonderful! Review: This film was offers breathtaking cinematography, a truly original story line, fine acting, and terrific music! A very uplifting, and humerous movie, with one of the most touching "eulogies" ever spoken. I've seen it four times and it only gets better. Anybody else want to move to Tulleymore?
