Summary: unparalled
Review: Simply the most powerful piece of animation I have ever seen. You will not see another piece of film with a message as poignant as this one for a long, long, time. Unrelentlessly downbeat, yet deeply moving. 5++

Summary: The Best Japanese anime movie I have ever seen!
Review: It is post-war Japan, just weeks before American troops arrive for occupation. In city of Kobe, a boy lies dying in a train station. By his body lies a small metal candy container. A janitor, not sure what to make of its ashy contents, pitches it into the night. As fireflies float softly around it, the ghostly figures of the boy and his little sister emerge...

Flashback to a short time earlier. Orphaned and homeless from a fire-bomb attack on their city, 14-year-old Seita and his 4-year-old sister Setsuko set out to survive on their own in the face of a society no longer able to help them. Forced into living in an abandoned bomb shelter in the Japanese countryside, they slowly come to realize that they cannot escape the hardships of war or even find enough food on which to survive...

This powerful and tragic story about the effect of WWII on Japanese children is simply an anime masterpiece which no fan of great cinema should miss. Highly recommended but remember to have an extra box of Kleenex on hand! Enjoy!!

Summary: A loving brother's tribute to the memory of his sister
Review: An autobiographical memory giving an unforgettably human face to the horrors of war. This is a story about man's inhumanity to man, from the bombers decimating civilian targets to the local farmers and petty officials who turn an uncaring face to desparate, starving children. But more than anything, it is a brother's remembrance of his little sister, Setsuko. I have a daughter very near Setsuko's apparent age in the film, and, as I read in another reviewer's comments, the animation truly captures the essence of a living little girl. Difficult to watch, but do so anyway, as a gesture of honor to a brother's love.

Summary: Disturbing,Devestating,Powerful, and unbelievably Depressing
Review: This is like no other 'anime.' Just becuase it's Japanese animation, dont expect a Ninja Scroll-type gore/action flic. Grave of the Fireflies is the most depressing movie I have ever seen, and I've seen quite a few. This is a dangerously sad movie that could easily upset people, and it is definately not for everybody. I watched it with my little brother and I felt terrible when I saw how it effected him. It's very hard to watch but if you can make it through you'll experience a film that is truly like no other. It's one of those movies that is impossible to forget. A classic.

Summary: Excellent Story and Animation
Review: A movie by Studio Ghibli, animated by Isao Takahata. The Film company is the same that made My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service and The Princess Mononoke(coming to America this year from Japan). Central Park Media have release this classic on DVD and Video. A Sad story about Seito(brother 14yrs old) and Setsuko(sister 4 yrs old), who are in japan during WW2 and the American air raids. Having lost everything, mother and home, they must find a way to survive the horrors of war. Father in the Navy, they don't know if hes dead or alive, Relatives in Tokyo and nearby town, they don't know how to contact them. A story that won the 1994 Chicago Childrens film festival award. Sure to win your hearts.

Summary: A real heart mover.
Review: I cried. This was the first movie I've ever cried over. Yes, I am female and presently I am 16 years old and a junior in High School. Anyway, this film is very moving. It's about a boy, Seita, who seems to be no older than 14, who is forced to raise his little sister, Setsuko (about 4), after the tragic death of his mother in an air raid during World War II. After being rejected by their distant aunt and their father being away in the Japanees navy, the two move into an abandoned bomb shelter. It's about all the hardships they face, and how something as simple as a box of fruit drops can make some of the pains of war go away for both of them. It is a very moving story, I think it beautifully expresses some of the many hardships that the Japanees people went through, after their government started a war that they failed win. It is a well writen story, with amazing characters. You'll never feel the same about war after you've seen this movie. It's funny to think how much two little kids really do need their parents and how strong the love between a brother and sister really can be. If you have any questions about this movie, mail me, or just buy it. It is definetly worth buying. I think everyone should atleast view this movie once.
