Summary: Grave of the Fireflies
Review: This is an amazing movie! I watched it in history class and then went home and rented it. It's a really sad movie and although I don't normally cry at movies, this one made my eyes a little misty. I liked the Japanese version with the English subtitles more because the voices were much better. However, if you don't want to read, the English dubbed version is still excellent!

Summary: A Must See
Review: This is perhaps the animated equivalent of John Ford's "The Grapes Of Wrath".

Like all great art it transends the limitations of it's genre. The fact that it is animated is incidental -- it is simply an extrodinary film, fully of extrodinary performances, images, and emotions.

But it's definitely not for the suicidal.

Summary: ONE HECK OF A TEAR JERKER!
Review: This is quite a heart wrenching movie. (Which has been said many times but there aren't many other ways to describe it.) The only imput I can give more about Grave of the Fireflies is prepare yourself before you watch this movie! Jeez, I didn't know movies could have such an affect on people, but this one shows no mercy. Nevertheless, it's a good experience because although not an antiwar film, (as said by the creator) it shows that all people suffer when a country is at war, especially the civilians. This movie really educated me on the reality of war, which is surprising for an anime.

Summary: Very Depressing War Story
Review: This was one of the most depressing films I have ever seen. The setting is Japan during WWII. A boy and his young sister are forced to survive on their own because their mother dies and their father is off fighting in the war. Food is scarce in the village, and the boy does everything he can to provide for himself and his hungry sister. This movie will make you smile and have you in tears.

Summary: suicide, anyone?
Review: This was an incredible movie. It was well-made, and the story was riveting, but God, how depressing. When it was over I wanted to slit my wrists. However, despite how sad it is, I recommend it to everyone. It is such a fantastic movie. Don't miss it. It inspires powerful emotions.

Summary: An anime movie filled with emotions...
Review: I have seen Grave of the Fireflies 5 times so far and everytime I watch it, I find something new. Many themes and symbolism can be drawn upon from this movie. Unlike other typical anime where there are giant robots, scantily clad babes, and in my opinion, fake emotions, Grave of the Fireflies portrays situations and characters in a realistic manner. This film is beautiful with its artistry and ability to capture human emotions of children. Setsuko, the little girl, is especially a joy to watch and reminds me of how I was when a child. For those of you who are curious and have read the other reviews (like I have), please, buy this movie now. It will stay in your mind for a long time.

Summary: This anime classic has no match.
Review: Even non-anime viewers will enjoy this moving and heart-touching film. It clearly shows that in war it is the civilians who suffer, especially children who are helpless about what's going on around them. The musical score (or lack thereof in some cases) does a great job setting the tone of each scene. The animation style is more realistic than other anime, helping to set the serious tone of the film. The characters are such that viewers will empathize with those suffering the effects of war. Grave of the Fireflies is truly one of the best anime I've ever seen.

Summary: A heavy dose of emotional pain.
Review: <sniff> Let me start out by saying that this is truly a shocking movie. I saw it thinking that it was just another World War II movie, only in 2-D. Boy, was I wrong. I may never forget this film. It's so depressing that it hurts to watch.

This is basically a story of how a 14-year-old boy (Seita)and his 4-year-old sister(Setsuko)died after America bombed Japan. Their mother died of a disease, their father died in the navy, and their aunt doesn't want to live with them. So these two kids are forced to live in their own little bomb shelter. Slowly, they begin to lose their young, innocent lives to the merciless war. The ending comes as no surprise, but the WAY it comes.....wow. I especially remember the scene where Setsuko walks out of the bomb shelter's enterance with the world's cutest look on her face, as if she were to say, "Hello. My name's Setsuko. What's yours?" At that point, I was thinking: "Oh my gosh, she's so cute! Why did she have to DIE?" <sob>

This movie was rated PG, but I don't think it should be. It has many images of wounded, some showing rather bloody results. And the whole idea about these two innocent children dying in the war is actually quite disturbing. I would've rated it PG-13, but then that's the MPAA for you.

Now then, WHY did I rate this only 4 stars? Simple: Even though this film is very well-done, it is extremely painful to watch. It doesn't leave feeling better afterwards. I doubt that I will ever watch it again. Still, I recommend this film to everyone who thinks Japan deserved to suffer. You will never look at World War II the same way ever again. And don't worry if it leaves you crying like a baby. It's supposed to!

Summary: BUT IT NOW!
Review: The story is one of THE REALLY BEST I ever seen in any movie. Every woman starts to cry... promised :-). This animation shows how cold humans are with very emotional pictures! I have the same opinion as others: "You won't forget this movie EVER"!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Not for those who say "But they bombed Pearl Harbor"
Review: This movie will almost make you ashamed of being a human being. This is a movie about the triumph of human spirit and the total defeat of human spirit. If you think "well, they started the f--king war," this movie is definitely not for you. But if you think war; no matter where it happens, no matter when it happens, and no matter who is involved; is the most tragic thing that man can create, this movie will tell you "Yeah, you are right about that, but you haven't done sh-t. Are you going to do anything about it?" Watch it and be ashamed of yourself for having done nothing for your fellow humans. Come back and think about it all.
