Summary: Gross.
Review: I guess it was unfair of me to want to see some martial arts in this...but the gun play...well, I guess I'm just not a big fan of people intermittently firing guns and hiding behind walls. And naturally, since I have a vagina, it precludes me from thinking big explosions are something really cool. I was bored...disappointed with Mira Sorvino...whose chest was pathetically visible by leaving her sweater unnecessarily open, but was only beaten in patheticness by her acting.

Review: I personaly think this is better than some of John Woos movies. It has better choereoghraphy and the final scene is as good if not better than action scenes in some action flicks from John Woo.It may have a paper thin plot, but it makes up for it in the action sequences.so if you are looking for good movies this is a very good one!

Review: I thought this movie was very action packed and great acting bye the two stars through the movie very real acting and the sound track that played during the movie engulghed you in the movie was picked out perfect for the movie yun~fat chow is a very good upcomming actor and Mira Sorvino needs to do more action movies like this its seems to really bring her acting abilitly out well you might not agree with me thats ok at least i sure enjoyed it thanks for reading jeff...

Summary: Below Average Brainless Action Flick!
Review: This is one of those action flicks that cry out for John Woo. It was Chow Yun Fat's first American role and while his English still needs work, he deserved a better project. Chow Yun Fat made an astonishing string of Chinese action classics with John Woo, namely 'The Killer' and 'Hard Boiled', but surprisingly delivers a shallow performance in this mindless action flick. He has a natural charisma that can create fireworks if in the right hands. Mira Sorvino had just scored big by winning an Oscar in Woody Allen's 'Mighty Aphrodite', and one can't help but ponder why she even considered doing this film. Unfortunately her talents are gravely underused and they even made her venture into 'bad acting' by making her say stupid dialogue and dumb fake faces in the action sequences, it just seems really fake. By renting or watching a film like this one would expect at least some eye-catching action sequences and here is where the film gravely disappoints. The beginning action sequence is badly choreographed and has incredibly bad timing, fortunately it gets better than the first one. But still, one can't help but expect more from films, and by watching awesome action flicks like 'The Killer', 'Face/Off' or 'Hard Boiled', one has seen it done as well as it can be. I just expect at least 'more of the same'. As for the film itself, it has a ludicrous plot, bad character development and a pace that drags. Only Sorvino makes some of the scenes barely tolerable. I sensed a bit of déjà vu from John Woo's 'The Killer' twice. First, with the relationship of Yun Fat and the policeman seems almost borrowed from 'The Killer', only this time it doesn't work. Second, the scene where Yun Fat is taking care of his gunshot wound is almost identical to the one in 'The Killer' only that here it seems ridiculous. About the only good thing about this film is that you learn to appreciate more those other 'classic action films'. But don't get me wrong, for people who haven't seen those vastly superior films or really don't care and like their action films mindless and hollow, then this is the film for them. I just like to point out that we, as an audience, deserve better. From a scale of 1-10 I give this film a 4!

Summary: Watch, Listen, and Believe
Review: There's something to this Antoine Fuqua. Previously a maker of commercials, and a protégé of Jack Woo, this guy makes every frame count. Just watching the opening sequence, you may detect that there are no accidents in the way he makes a film. None! In this sequence, Lee moves in among the unholy, unseen. He finds his target, and delivers his message of death. First, in the image of the bullet branded with the word "death". Then, in an absolutely controlled, both feet planted dance, he rains down death - all to the lyrics, "...there is hope. Get hope!" Interesting. Something of a mystic, and certainly a searcher of truth, Fuqua, here tells a story that, for every person who ever took a stand, can reveal fundamental elements in the battle and in the struggle. John Lee is a just man under the employ of the unjust. But he's only allowed himself to be used in ways that don't violate service to his true master. Once this has been put to the test, he stands to reveal himself, and in doing so, calls up the power of He who sent him. Fantastic! This is not some ugly action film. It's a sonnet!

Summary: Yet Another Action Movie
Review: There was real potential with this film. Chow Yun Fat to star in an exciting film with some decent co-stars (Mira Sorvino and Jurgen Prochnow). So who was responsible for turning it into a real damp squib and wasting the budget? Give some film-makers millions of dollars to spend on a film and I get the impression they can't deal with it. Or is it Hollywoods' fault? Seeing as how some films get re-cut without the directors input afterwards. Chow Yun Fats character is really dull. English is not his first language and he looks lost, the director needed to work harder to get more emotion from him. Or perhaps that is how they decided to play his character, strong, silent and unimaginatively like in alot of other action films. Jurgen Prochnow is also wasted. The 2 stars are for Mira Sorvino and the some of the music. She does a great job and almost saves the film. Her first scene is great and so is another later on. The film looks good but most of them do these days. It would be good to see more thought from the scriptwriters/directors/studios (whoever is to blame) in the future.

Summary: All style, no substance.
Review: The success of director Michael Bay, and to a lesser degree Simon West means everyone wants a hot young hip music vid director to helm there next $50million action picture. Uber-producing team Bernie Brillstein and Brad Grey, who's recent successes include the action spectaculars "Just Shoot Me", "Newsradio", and "The Larry Sanders Show" get into the action ballgame a day late and a dollar short with discard vid director Antoine Fuquay, a man with a history of spending money faster than Oprah can make it. The film looks good, lots of camera tricks, plenty of hip production design. Like a 90 minute music vid, with no music, no commercials, no VJ breaks-nothing to break up the never ending monotony. Never ending monotony may be redundant, but it's oh so appropriate. The story is so weak, the script, so bad that you hardly realize that Yun-fat Chow still hasn't learned a whole lot of English. 'English is my first language" Mira Sorvino lays so many accents on at one time her English is only barely decipherable as well. Buy this film at the vid store when it goes on sale for 99 cents, then use the cassette to tape your favorite show over the Replacement Killers. You'll get good value that way.

Summary: Chow Yun-PHAT
Review: Chow Yun-Fat makes this movie. He is the coolest Asian since Bruce Lee and, though his style is different, his talent is comparable to Bruce's. Mira is sexy as hell as the street girl with a heart of gold, so to speak. John Woo never dissapoints. In this one, he combines the grittyness of the big city with an Asian mysticism creating suspense throughout and one of the coolest final showdown scenes I've ever seen. Not a classic flick, but definitely a winner as an action film. By the way, it was the very first DVD I ever bought and it was worth it because the sound plays well on my DVD enteretainment system. You feel every gunshot!

Summary: Solid action-packed entertainment
Review: I liked this movie. If you like action films, I see no reason why you wouldn't like it. There's a ton of action, and I thought it was well done. It's basically all gun fighting, John Woo-style, so if you're not into that, stay away. The directing by Antoine Fuqua is excellent. He has a really cool style. There are a lot of great angles he uses. Some nice overhead shots, and a really innovative "point of view" shot (you'll see what I mean). The action scenes are definitely influenced by John Woo, who executive produced. The major difference is they are not as violent or bloody as Woo's films. The body count isn't as high. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, just letting you know what you're getting into. Chow Yun-Fat comes across well. His English is fine. Mira Sorvino isn't great, though. She's kind of annoying in the beginning, but she's toned down as time goes on. Check this out. It's a fun action-packed ride that will fly by. There's no complex story here, so just sit back, relax, and watch some cool gun fighting.
