Summary: Must own for real aciton fans
Review: These movies are both amazin action films. The Killer is about a hitman running from the mob while teaming up w/ a cop. hardboiled is about one mans quest to kill a slimy gun dealer. The Killer has a better story but Hardboiled is a much better film overall. Both are 5 star films. The Killer has great gritty action that takes place on a beach, apartment, night club etc. The Church scene is one of the top 5 shootouts ever filmed. it will blow u away, in addition to about 50 bad guys. The ending is one of the most un-hollywood ever filmed and will bring tough guys to the verge of tears. Great movie that will prepare u for Hardboiled. Hardboiled is WOo's apex. Chow and Lung are amazing and cool. This is woos highpoint. This movie has action in such quantity that i never though possble. shootouts in tea houses, wharhouses, boats etc. THe hospital fineale is THE GREATEST SHOOTOUT EVER. IT HAS MORE ACTION THEN THE WHOLE DIEHARD TRILOGY!! This was Woo's last HK film and he truly went out with a bang.

Summary: Two Gun-Fu Classics
Review: These two films provide a wonderful introduction to the work of both John Woo and Chow Yun-Fat.

John Woo has had some success in America with his over-the-top live action cartoons such as Face/Off and Mission Impossible 2. It's fairly amazing, but these two films are way better than any of his US work even though they were obviously filmed at a fraction of the budget. Other reviewers here have mentioned the "poor quality" of the drama in his films. I say that watching Woo films for drama is like watching baseball for touchdowns. But if you want films jam-packed with action and gratuitous, gracefully choreographed violence, Woo is your master.

Chow Yun-Fat is now best known in the US for his role in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. As masterful as that film is, so are these films...but in a completely different way. No wires, no fancy karate, no magical mythology. Just guns guns guns! It's quite fantastic about half way through The Killer when he promises Jenny "I will try not to kill anymore," and then he proceeds to kill about 300 more people. Ha ha ha! In these and many of his other films, Chow Yun-Fat plays more of an anti-hero like you'd see in a typical film noir. He'll be one of the central characters, and while he's clearly cast as a "bad guy," he is always very likable and has a strong code of honor and sense of morality. You quickly find yourself rooting for him, forcing you to at least acknowledge the shady gray areas between good and evil. Actually, these themes are consistent through most of John Woo's films as well -- so much for the "mindless action" criticism.

My friend and HK cinema mentor Scott gave me the following advice when I bought this: Watch Hard Boiled first. Hard Boiled is awesome, but The Killer is about a million times better and watching that first would only leave you unfairly disappointed with Hard Boiled.

Summary: Classic...
Review: These two films... in my opinion... are the pinncale of Woo and Fat's achievements. The two must collaborate on a Holywood production... Replacement Killers just lacked the intensity and story of these Classics. The Killer has more of a plot... and has better character development. Killer, Cop, love interest/victim... and the bad guys. The action choreography and cinematography have become their own genre... distinctly Woo. Action galore and sound acting performances. Hard Boiled is my personal favorite of any HK flick... because the first shoot-out scene is the best ever. Bird cage... stair rail and lots of guns. The story revolves around a cop and an ex-gangster taking down a crimelord. Not much in the story but has sound performances. The story drags between the action sequences. Woo ties in all his brilliant stunt choreography and cinematography in this film as well with better settings than the killer making this a more action orientated film. A must in any action library... something you will never tire of watching.

Summary: Highest BPM ever!
Review: These WOO classics stunningly mix violence and cinematic excellence into an end result that'll blow you away. Their BPM levels are the highest ever, and they each played an integral role in bringing Director John Woo into the mainstream. These are two of the films that made him!

Having only been available on DVD for a short time in the early days of the format, these new productions are dual language (Cantonese and English) and feature brand new commentary by Mr. Woo.

IF you are an action fan, this is a great two film set that will leave you wondering why most action films are really so boring.

As for BPM, you may wonder that that stands for....Bullets Per Minute:)

Summary: Double Dynamite!
Review: This is an excellent, affordable deuce of John Woo classics. They are an interesting pair, showing different facets of John Woo's directorial style. While primarily known for his action, I find John Woo more compelling for his ability to weave a good story and compelling characters into action scenes. This is what separates his movies from the American equivalent.

"The Killer" is a story driven, personal, Shakespearian epic of honor and loyalty. Chow Yun Fat and Danny Lee are flip sides of a coin, one a cop, the other a paid killer, who find themselves drawn into an unavoidable admiration for each other. The violence in this film is poetic rather than gratuitous. The ending is personal and the deaths are meaningful. I find this to be the superior film.

"Hard Boiled" is the counterbalance to "The Killer." It is sheer, over the top violence. Shotguns fire the famous "John Woo Bullets" that explode upon impact. Sub machine guns never run out of ammo. In this film, Chow Yun Fat is the hard boiled policeman and Tony Leung Chiu Wai is an undercover agent that may have gone too far. Like "The Killer," these two dangerous characters gain a grudging respect for each other. Unlike the "The Killer," "Hard Boiled" finds it's big finish in a Hollywood style extravaganza of blood and bullets on a major scale.

Again, this is a really great package with interesting commentary and a few features. Who knew that John Woo's films are influenced by the American musical? I recommend "A Better Tomorrow" to follow up this great set.

Summary: not very good
Review: this movie is plain bad. yes good gun fight but where's the kung fu. Theirs plenty of american made film that are way better in terms of action sequence. Man even the gun fight in Face off was much better then the killer or hard boiled. Maybe im not into old fashion gun fight like in these two movie, i would rather watch a movie like ballistic kiss, great gun fight, some kungfu and a little special effect. I don't care if the killer or hard boil was made 10 or 20 years ago. It's just didn't live up to my potential. This is the 21st century, i need some special effect. I don't understand why some of you people keep living in the past. trust me their are way better mivie then these two and were made in the 70 and 80. Take for example the God Father 1 and 2, much better movie then these two, go and recomend this movie for the customer not some lame movie like killer and hard boil. As for chow yun fat check out my review for Hidden dragon crouching tiger.

Summary: Very poor quality transfer....

Summary: Definitive films in the action genre
Review: True masterpieces of the action genre, John Woo's early stuff is definitely going to be his best. With this action packed, operatic like film, Woo seriously manages to stage some of the coolest action sequences ever caught on film. As with all Woo films, there is always the well done characterization with Yun-Fat as the sympathetic hitman in The Killer and good guy cop in Hard Boiled. Standouts are at the end of the films with some really illustrative shootouts.
